The overwhelming forecasts in population growth rates, the changes in production development, the ambitious plans for national development and a new iniciative of regional integration provide an opportunity so that Africa consolidates a sustainable development path and a future out of poverty and instability. This economic outlook also offers important opportunities for Spain and the rest of Europe, given our status of closest neighbours and partners. Our position in this great adventure depends in large part on our ability to mobilize investments and to foster trade exchanges and corporate presence in the region.

The objective of this article is to put forward policy recommendations regarding the management and institutional promotion of the flows of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) received by Africa. There are three main geographic areas that channel FDI to the African continent: the United States, China and the European Union. This paper studies the strategies adopted by these investors in Africa, performs an analysis of public FDI data towards Africa, and shows the strategic business approaches of multinationals that channel IDE towards Africa. On the other hand, the impact of FDI in developing economies is examined and a conceptual framework is proposed to explain the beneficial effects of FDI in Africa. Based on our model, some policy recommendations on this matter are presented.

Our aim in this paper is to measure the influence of food insecurity in the migration flows between Africa and Europe. To do so, we use a sample including data from countries of the two continents from 2000 to 2018, and employing probit models, we conclude that even after controlling for other factors such as conflicts, natural disasters or income differences, food insecurite arises as an additional explanatory variable of the migration flows between Africa and Europe.

The COVID-19 epidemic will have an unparalleled impact in the world and has negatively affected the African economies even before the spread of the virus on the continent. Despite the recent positive evolution and the economic potential of Africa, external dependence exacerbates considerably its exposure to external shocks. It is still soon to evaluate the full impact of this crisis. Some preliminary estimates point out that Africa could go into recession for the first time in 25 years. African countries have already adopted measures to prevent the spread of the virus and to smooth its short-term consequences. There is an ongoing discussion on the economic measures that should be implemented in the medium and long term to increase economic resilience and growth in Africa.

This article focuses on the different roles of livestock in Africa, a continent where livestock keeping is widespread. Livestock goes beyond milk, eggs and meat. For pastoralism, livestock is an economic and social cornerstone. Two features that help to understand livestock breeding in Africa are the numerous market failures (keeping it distant from an idyllic perfect competition) and pastoralism. The roles of livestock gathered in this article are: food and nutrition, income and livelihood, cash, savings and store of value, insurance and safety net, as multiplier of agricultural productivity, and its social and cultural role. We also discuss the externalities associated with livestock breeding.

The COVID-19 pandemic is not exclusively a public health crisis. It has spiralled into a complex global socio-economic crisis of a kind not seen since the Second World War. Unlike the 2008 global financial and economic crisis, the current economic crisis is interlocked with a public health emergency at a time of weak global collaboration and has exposed the vulnerability of the economic system. It has also revealed wide differences in government policy responses, highlighting various industrial policy and developmental roles of governments. This paper maps and analyses the variation in governments’ responses to the public health emergency and in their economic rescue packages.

Multilateral institutions have been critical to catalyzing financing and mitigating risk in the developing world. They have been successful in creating new platforms designed to accomplish both objectives, but investors, traders, and lenders continue to perceive high degrees of risk in developing countries. Africa’s multilateral institutions have been at the forefront of this effort and are in the process of creating new approaches to risk mitigation, including by pooling their resources.
