A corpus of texts by Osdany Morales and Jorge Enrique Lage is analyzed, recovering the political gesture of a writing that has been freed from the burden of representing any previous foundation. Far from referring to any profound truth, it is proposed that this political gesture occurs at the surface level of writing itself: as an inquiry on the act of writing, and as an affirmation of what writing can do, beyond the unfavorable production conditions in Cuba.

This work analyzes the figure of abandonment as an ethical possibility of essay writing in Alberto Giordano's El tiempo de la convalecencia. Between theoretical speculation and the confessional effect, between moral judgment and knowledge based on experience, it bursts forth as a record of writing that goes from the security of what is known to abandonment as a task; The movement that I bring brings the discontinuity of the unknown, the irony of dispossession and egotistical skepticism. In this way, the text, which recovers the best of the French tradition - the Barthesian as if novelizing desire - and also of the English tradition - the irony that makes it possible to constantly question literature - can be read as a poetics of the critical as an artist, or of the critical vocation without moral reach.

The astronomical controversy between Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora and Eusebio Francisco Kino over the comet observed from the northern hemisphere in 1680 and 1681 has been read by the critics by means of dichotomic categories, silencing the complex map of actors involved in the production, publication and circulation of their scientific treaties. In the present article we propose to integrate the fields of Latin American Literary Studies and of Studies of Science, Technology and Society in order to compare those patronage and institutional networks, as well as rhetorical strategies, which have legitimized the contenders’ works through time.

In Vida de Dominguito (1886), Domingo Faustino Sarmiento narrates a biography of his adopted son, Domingo Fidel Sarmiento, who had died twenty years earlier in the Paraguay War. In order to reconstruct the young man’s life and death, he resorts to the voices of those who knew him as well as to some texts written by Dominguito himself. The result is a kind of collage in which the different versions at times contradict each other. In this paper, I propose that starting point to reflect on the contradictions involved in a heroic figure’s configuration: that is, constructing a story of those who give their lives for the country.

Ever since the discovery of geologic ‘deep time’, modern literary imagination in the 19th century has been using the long time-scale of the history of the earth for its articulation with modern history. Some elements of Argentina’s geologic history, which have played a decisive role in the development of palaeontology, have been used by authors as different as Honoré de Balzac and Florentino Ameghino for an imaginary foundation of present civilizations or nations in deep time. Unlike such appropriations of the deep past, contemporary literature no longer uses geologic time in order to anchor the present in the past, but to question the foundational character of geologic dynamics at the threshold of the new geologic era called the “Anthropocene”.

Jorge Luis Borges uses the laws of detective novels to design complex works that need to an active reader. The analysis of the reading methodologies outlined in Ficciones allows us to think the volume as a reading book, in the didactical sense of the term. As a reader, the book presents a theory and a practice on suspicious reading strategies that place the reader at the core of literature.

This article aims to tackle Witold Gombrowicz’s complex relation with tradition. To this end, it shows how Gombrowicz finds it useful to subvert the conventional viewpoint on ‘vulgarity’ and the popular classes, in comparison with an author who appears to be a complete opposite: Marcel Proust.  Although references to Latin American authors are few, this article purports to highlight the role of tradition in marginal cultures, such as the Argentine; and, as a result,[i] to shed light on the relation between the Argentine ‘immature’ author and tradition.

Introduction: Frequently, diabetic patients present neuropathic pain as a complication of their disease. Objective:To identify the advantages of systemic ozone therapy for insulin-dependent diabetic patients with neuropathic pain. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out with insulin-dependent diabetic patients with neuropathic pain who attended the Pain Clinic of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital between February 2014 until January 2019. All of them were quantified pain, the presence of paresthesias, muscle strength, ankle jerk reflex, and glycosylated hemoglobin. The patients received fifteen sessions of rectal ozone and six sessions of major self-hemotherapy. We compared the outcomes after the first session and after the last one (eight weeks).Results: 45.3% were 60 years or older, 59% were female, and 89.3% had a natural history of diabetes of 15 years or more. In the first hospital visit, the intensity of 100% pain ranged between 7 and 10 according to the verbal numeric scale, and all presented paresthesias. In 59.3%, there was a decrease in muscle strength, 62% had decreased ankle jerk reflex, and 88% had glycosylated hemoglobin higher than or equal to 12%. These symptoms improved at week eight. Conclusions: The proven analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of ozone make it currently a therapeutic tool among the most efficient for controlling chronic pain in insulin-dependent diabetic patients. Keywords:   insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; neuropathic pain; ozone therapy.
