All'inizio del Novecento l'Abruzzo fu la meta di due viaggi paralleli, ma del tutto diversi: uno fu compiuto da Anne MacDonell, scrittrice e traduttrice inglese di vaglia, l'altro coinvolse Carlo Placci, mondano intellettuale e giornalista di fama internazionale. Entrambi lasciarono memoria scritta di quelle esperienze: la prima con un dettagliato resoconto odeporico pubblicato come volume illustrato nel 1908, il secondo con un ben più breve racconto che apparve inizialmente su «Il Marzocco» l’8 luglio 1906 e fu poi incluso due anni dopo nella raccolta In Automobile (1908). Partendo dai punti in comune tra l’autrice e lo scrittore – cronologia e luoghi descritti, contesto e riferimenti culturali a loro disposizione – il contributo intende offrire una prima riflessione su come gli evidenti fattori di diversità tra MacDonell e Placci abbiano influenzato i rispettivi racconti.

Nella primavera del 1907 la scrittrice britannica Anne MacDonell e la pittrice inglese Amy Atkinson realizzarono un viaggio attraverso gli Abruzzi, il cui resoconto, intercalato da acquerelli, fu pubblicato nel libro In the Abruzzi a Londra nel 1908. Le descrizioni dei paesaggi, degni di assurgere a scenari di opere letterarie concepite in età romantica, e le digressioni sui monumenti e sugli oggetti d’interesse storico-artistico della regione, filtrate tramite il paradigma dannunziano, rappresentano un osservatorio privilegiato per comprendere le caratteristiche di un racconto che fu recensito dai contemporanei come un “romance of a romantic country”.

From the middle of the 19th century, Umbria was a land of discovery for several Pre-Raphaelite women painters from England, who pictorially interpreted the 'enchantment' of the local landscape and culture. Their interest focuses on the most remote places in the region characterised by a spatial, cultural, and social isolation that, in their eyes, gave the Umbrian hill towns the physiognomy of perfectly preserved and living ancient communities. This is the case of the impressions gained by the painter Joanna Mary Boyce during her stay in Todi in 1857, as witnessed by several letters and a notebook of travel sketches that were fundamental for the realisation of one of her most successful paintings: The Departure - An Episode of the Child’s Crusade (1857-1861). The attention of the female artists-travellers (including Evelyn Pickering De Morgan and Marie Spartali Stillman) to the Umbrian landscape, to the art and history of small towns contributes to feeding the Pre-Raphaelite legend of 'enchanted' Umbria. This precise imagery, profoundly characterising and destined to adapt to the times or to be overturned by reaction in the Italian and European artistic culture of 20th century, is also summarised and discussed in the volume A Little Pilgrimage in Italy (1911) by Olave Muriel Potter.

The work Costumi e superstizioni dell’Appennino marchigiano by Caterina Pigorini Beri is not only a document of precious archival and historical importance on the uses of the Marche hinterland of the late nineteenth century, but also opens a window for reflection on two other important issues: the first is the condition of the intellectual woman who, in the absence of specific training, conducts her research in an autonomous and pioneering manner. The work highlights an emerging contrast between amateurism, linked to the sphere of the feminine, and science, the field of male domination. Since Pigorini Beri's work is independent of a specific discipline and a scientifically structured working method, it is placed in a crossroad between the travel notebook, the impressionistic sketch, and the ethno-anthropological description. However, the insights contained in the work (see the meaning of "paganity" attributed to local folkloristic manifestations), the work of gathering information, the posture of the author (inside and outside the narrated world), introduce at a primitive and developing level those elements of methodology that will characterize De Martino's ethnographic and anthropological study in the twentieth century.The second question concerns the overall meaning that the author entrusts to her story, in controversy with the "intrusive positivism" of the era she is living. From this perspective the work seems to have its reasons rooted in the "anti-modernist" positions of the late nineteenth century, where saving the culture of local realities from oblivion is not only an operation of intellectual value, but a necessary condition for acquiring knowledge of the world.

The Covid-19 pandemic has generated a number of studies on the use of metaphor to frame the disease and the trope has been presented as a prominent feature of Covid-19 discourse. The metaphor of war has been identified as the master metaphor for framing the health emergency, prompting reflections about its possible drawbacks and feasible alternative framings in order to generate a more constructive stance among the general public, politicians and administrators. Such studies largely refer to corpora drawn from heterogeneous sources, combining official statements with coverage in mainstream media, blogs and opinion pieces. The present study is based exclusively on a homogeneous single-genre corpus, namely the official Covid-19 announcements made by the former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson from the beginning of March 2020 to December of the same year. Using automated interrogation routines, frequency and keyword functions were examined to define the extent and expose underlying patterns of metaphor use in this genre. The quantitative data was also subjected to qualitative analysis from the perspective of Extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory, which led to insights into contextual constraints and cultural facets of metaphor use in this genre. The results obtained could be considered surprising. It emerged that Boris Johnson resorted to metaphor only sparingly in this genre. The results highlighted that, on the rare occasions when he did rely on this trope, his usage was very predictable and conventional. However, despite the low frequency and keyness of metaphor in his Covid-19 announcements, this rhetorical figure was seen to offer diverse resources and produce multiple effects, even when used so conservatively.  

L’articolo indaga il soggiorno nel centro Italia di un gruppo di influenti pittrici finlandesi fra Ottocento e Novecento. Residenti a Firenze in momenti diversi della loro vita, le artiste esplorarono zone dell’entroterra e della costa toscana fuori delle più tradizionali mete turistiche, nel momento in cui in Finlandia andava maturandosi un rinnovato interesse per l’Italia, per la sua cultura e soprattutto per le antiche tradizioni pittoriche medievali e rinascimentali. Il soggiorno di quelle donne in Italia fu dunque segnato dallo studio dell’arte del passato, dall’esercizio della copia, dall’esplorazione delle campagne toscane, reinterpretate attraverso un registro che preferisce al più consolidato stile “pittoresco” lo sperimentalismo linguistico dedotto dal confronto con l’arte locale ma anche francese e tedesca contemporanea. I risultati sono dipinti e disegni, conservati nella maggior parte dei casi presso i principali siti museali finlandesi, eseguiti nel solco di quella sensibilità vitalistica nordica alla base della quale è l’adorazione della bellezza mediterranea nonché la fiducia nel ritorno della Classicità nella civiltà Occidentale.

Il contributo offre una lettura trasversale di due scritture di viaggio ad opera di viaggiatrici inglesi che all’inizio del Novecento attraversarono le terre d’Abruzzo: In the Abruzzi di Anne McDonell (1908) e Through the Apennines and the Lands of the Abruzzi: Landscape and Peasant Life di Estella Canziani (1928). Partendo da una ricognizione della letteratura critica sulla scrittura odeporica femminile e del suo intreccio con le cornici metodologiche che hanno indagato il panorama immaginario del Sud Italia, margine del margine e simbolica zona d’ombra tra l’Europa e l’Africa, l’analisi si concentrerà soprattutto sulle differenze nella strutturazione della voce narrante e della posizionalità dello sguardo in questi due resoconti, per disinnescare il rischio di appiattire queste soggettività in uno stereotipo che non renda merito delle stratificazioni che queste due scrittrici mostrano nei rispettivi approcci al territorio abruzzese. Il contrappunto tra elementi retorici come il commento politico e l’ironia per MacDonell e il linguaggio etnografico e favolistico per Canziani permettono a chi legge oggi di confrontarsi con le complessità dei territori raccontati e delle comunità che li abitano; l’intersezione di questi due sguardi femminili contribuisce ad una rappresentazione decisamente sfumata, che mette in questione facili binarismi come civilizzato/primitivo o tradizione/modernità.

This contribution carries out a spatial analysis of the short stories and poems collected in Giovanna Capone’s In My Neighborhood (2014), with a twofold aim: exploring the significance of physical and metaphorical liminalities in the development of Capone’s poetics and, on a more theoretical level, outlining an alternative paradigm, based on the concepts of liminality and communitas, to read Capone’s poetry, as well as other contemporary Italian-American literary texts. I identify four sites of liminality in Capone’s work and delve into their relationship with the narrative voice and the role they play in its evolution. This essay reflects on Giovanna Capone’s Bildung and her identity as a queer Italian-American author by re-reading the four spaces described in In My Neighborhood through the lens of Victor Turner’s theory of liminality and Roberto Esposito’s notion of communitas. Esposito’s development of the concept allows for an alternative interpretation of the community of Italian American queer subjectivities created by Capone in the Southwest. Finally, the connection of such community with Gloria Anzaldúa’s formulation of Borderland and ‘mestiza consciousness’ is highlighted as a theoretical counternarrative to the identification of the ethnic queer self as a member of a community defined by borders.

Questo studio si occupa di inserire la graphic novelist italiana Zuzu in quella corrente internazionale di fumettisti (Spiegelman, Sacco e Satrapi) che per mezzo dei loro graphic novel di genere autobiografico presentano esperienze personali intrise di valore politico, seguendo il concetto de ‘il personale è politico’ coniato dalla femminista Carol Hanisch. Giulia Spagnulo, in arte Zuzu, ci mostra l'immagine del corpo distopico nel primo graphic novel pubblicato, Cheese (2019). Qui, la protagonista Zuzu, affetta da bulimia, porta a compimento il percorso di guarigione dal disturbo alimentare grazie soprattutto al legame di solidarietà instaurato con i suoi amici. Nella seconda opera pubblicata, Giorni Felici (2021), l’autrice rappresenta invece l’immagine del corpo utopico. Attraverso il continuo richiamo al testo teatrale di Samuel Beckett Happy Days, l'autrice racconta la storia di Claudia e del suo tentativo di appropriazione del corpo utopico, mostruoso e capace di commettere violenza, che supera la dipendenza affettiva, guadagna amor proprio e raggiunge l’accettazione di sé. Entrambe le protagoniste riescono nel loro obiettivo di realizzare una ‘azione utopica’, ovvero il tentativo di apportare un cambiamento positivo nella loro vita in relazione a un malessere generato da una problematica interiore e personale, aspetto che segna la differenza più importante con le opere di Spiegelman, Sacco e Satrapi.

Of Armenian descent, though born in Padua and educated in Italy, Vittoria Aganoor (1855-1910) would travel along the peninsula from north to south, spending the last years of her life between Perugia and Magione-Monte del Lago. Along with lyric poetry, letters will play a central role in her experience as a writer, as evidence of a way of life in a pre-technological society. These are pages, some of which are still unpublished, on which this contribution intends to dwell, registering first of all the character of a female narrative, on which movements and encounters affect, highlighting the spirit of a woman who is free and lively, melancholic and tormented, inclined to introject feelings and ideals on which her soul will be nourished. It is also to be noted that the years spent in Umbria, since the dawn of the new century, will constitute a happy part of her existence, witnessed by her falling in love with that land and the landscape, particularly the muffled landscape of Lake Trasimeno, which she will be able to capture with the sensitivity and refinement of an uncommon humanistic education. Traits that still emerge from the correspondences entertained with prominent figures in early 20th-century literary-worldly society, in which Aganoor occupies a non-secondary role, thanks to her aristocratic origins and her subsequent marriage to Perugian deputy Guido Pompilj.
