Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is one of the major pathogens in pig farming, causing high economic losses, high mortality, weight loss of animals and high cost in treatments. This research aims to accompany the development of a monitoring system for young animals in a region that registers constant outbreaks of S. suis, allowing a detailed analysis of the spread of the disease, the identification of the age with the greatest involvement, as well as the rate of mortality within the flock. The study was carried out with a sample of 942 weaned piglets, with an average age of 24 days and an approximate weight of 5.06 kg. Monitoring of the animals was carried out, those with onset of symptoms suggestive of infection were medicated following an injectable drug protocol, with the clinical sign of choice for starting treatment was arthritis and/or motor incoordination. At the end of the experiment, total mortality was 204 piglets (21.65% of the batch), the highest mortality rate occurred in the 4th week after weaning, when the animals were in the 7th week of life.

Dairy cattle farming is a socially and economically valuable activity. However, the lack of consistency in productivity poses a challenge that affects the efficiency and profitability of the sector. This study investigated the use of exogenous administration of recombinant bovine somatotropin (BST-r) to improve milk production. Three Holstein cows with dairy aptitude were selected, and they received two applications of BST-r according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The daily milk quantity was measured throughout the study period. The results showed an increase and peak in production within the first 48 hours after administration, followed by a decline until the next hormonal administration. Cost and profit analysis indicated an increase in net yield. These findings suggest that the use of BST-r may be a promising strategy to enhance dairy cattle productivity.

Lactose intolerance is a disorder that affects a large part of the population. In view of this, the use of reliable methods for detecting and quantifying lactose in milk and its derivatives is essential. For this reason, this study aims to adapt the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (ADNS) method to quantify lactose in milk and fine Brie cheese, and to apply the validated method in the determination of lactose during the shelf life of the cheese. For this, an alternative DNAS method was first validated following the validation parameters (linearity, precision, accuracy, limits of detection and quantification) determined according to guidelines of RDC Nº166, of July 24, 2017 by ANVISA. After validation, the method was used to determine the lactose content in Brie cheese in four periods, at times 1, 8, 20 and 33 days of shelf life. The recovery levels of lactose in milk and Brie cheese were 103% and 68%, respectively. The lactose content in Brie-type cheese was 2.41 mg/g; 1.97 mg/g; 1.19 mg/g and 0.49 mg/g, at times 1, 8, 20 and 33 days, respectively. In this way, it was possible to demonstrate the reduction in the lactose content of Brie cheese, according to shelf life.

During pregnancy, women need guidance such as self-care and care for the newborn. In this way, the health professional must play an important role in the health care of the pregnant woman, aiming to provide a better recovery and prevention of possible complications that may arise during the prenatal and postpartum period. So, the objective of this article is to describe the actions and guidelines about the assistance of the professional nurse aimed at puerperal women in the face of prematurity. Articles were identified in the BDENF, Lilacs and Medline databases for the construction of this literature review, which has as a guiding question: What are the nurses' care aimed at assisting puerperal women in the face of prematurity? Nursing performance in the puerperal context was discussed, as well as the importance of awareness in the prenatal period about first care, exclusive breastfeeding, the diet directed to the mother in premature cases. Finally, it was observed that the nurse is essential for maintaining the health of the puerperal woman, helping mothers to overcome obstacles in returning home with their baby, making them autonomous in this process.

Introduction: The pregnancy process can be considered a social risk factor at the public health level, when integrated with the process of marginalization, poverty and vulnerability, as in pregnant women in street situations. Prenatal care is one of the pillars for promoting health during pregnancy, taking into account all the particularities involved in this process. Thus, it is a matter of great relevance in the context of social vulnerability. General objective: To understand prenatal care for pregnant women living on the streets. Method: This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the period of May 2023, in the databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature Health Sciences, Database in Nursing and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, through the Virtual Health Library and Scientific Electronic Library Online – Brazil. The Health Sciences Descriptors were used: “Nursing”; "Prenatal"; “Street location”; “Pregnant women” and “Assistance”. Nine studies, published and indexed in the last 10 years (2012-2020), were included. Results: In the initial electronic search, 40 articles were found. With the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles were chosen for reading the abstracts. After that, 9 articles were selected for full reading. Discussion: Street pregnant women are unprotected in the face of risk conditions, mainly due to lack of care and rights. The nursing professional should instruct the family on the importance of carrying out prenatal care. Conclusion: The integration of health services with public policies aimed at the homeless population is essential to ensure equitable access to prenatal care and to improve maternal and fetal health. Nursing professionals need to be trained to deal with the particularities of this vulnerable group, adapting prenatal care practices to their living conditions.

Brazil is the fourth largest producer and exporter of pork in the world. There is a need to improve knowledge of animal welfare through animal behavioral analysis. The interference of different types of floors and periods of the day on the behavioral components of pigs in the final finishing phase was evaluated. The experiment was carried out in a swine farm located in the city of Missal/PR. The experimental design used was completely randomized (DIC), in a 2x2 factorial scheme, with six replications. The treatments were constituted by the combination of two types of flooring, one in a bay with a solid concrete floor and water depth (laminate flooring) and the other in a bay with a mixed floor with part solid concrete and part gridded cast concrete (grilled floor), tested in two periods of the day (morning period from 8h to 12h and afternoon period, from 13h to 17h). The observations were carried out for 3 weeks, in total there were six observations and 48 hours of footage. The observed animals had been housed for 80 days and were observed up to 108 days. The data will be obtained through recordings of the animals. Subsequently, posture behaviors were verified (standing, sitting or lying down); interaction with the environment (visit to the feeder and drinker); and social interactions (agonistic, interaction and exploratory); stereotyped (simulated chewing and chewing time), with the aid of an ethogram. Variables with data normality were evaluated using the F test in the analysis of variance (ANOVA). When significant in the ANOVA, the means of floor, period and the hierarchical effect of a factor given to another, were compared using Tukey's test. Variables without verification of data normality were analyzed using the Friedman test at the 5% level. It was verified that the type of floor and the different periods of the day influence the behavioral components of the pigs in the final finishing phase. The grilled floor presented better results, as the animals interacted more, even with the highest ambient temperature; however, as the pens with this floor were smaller (compared to those with laminate flooring), it was observed that the animals showed stereotyped behavior. The research using an Etogram helped to better understand the behavior of pigs observed on different floors and stalls.

Objective: The objective of this study was to understand the reasons behind self-medication practices by analyzing its prevalence, along with the analysis of the role of nursing. Methods: This is an integrative literature review with a descriptive analysis, where studies and research on the risks of self-medication were analyzed. For data analysis and collection, articles available in full text published in the last 6 years were considered from the electronic databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online - Scielo, and the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS). Results: Fourteen articles were selected for discussion and organized separately by category according to the topics addressed. This approach allowed an objective and careful analysis of the proposed conclusions in each article. Conclusion: It was evidenced that the prevalence of self-medication is more common among the female population and, considering the financial condition, the practice is more prevalent among the low-income class. Regarding prevalence, it was concluded that the level of education performs a variable role in erroneous self-medication. Regarding the motivation of individuals for self-medication, it was concluded that among various reasons, the main ones are: the elderly often confuse symptoms of natural aging with pathological symptoms, seeking to alleviate signs and symptoms through erroneous self-medication. The presence of a home medicine cabinet, desire for self-care, and lack of time for a consultation with a healthcare professional were also identified as motivations.
