The book Céfero (1961), by Xavier Vargas Pardo, remained unattended by critics until recent years. Reviews right after its publication emphasized its particular use of the rural speech from central Mexico, while contemporary approaches have favored interpretations of the violent deeds described in the eleven short stories of the volume. Next to this violence, another element in the book emerges as a necessary correlative: characters’ vulnerability. This article offers a critical revalorization of Vargas Pardo’s book through the analysis of the conditions of vulnerability in the characters who are both subjects and/or perpetrators of the violence, as well as the acts of retribution by non-human agents who offer an unexpected balance to the absence of justice dominating the book from Michoacán.

In this article, we will analyze El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo, José María Arguedas posthumous novel, making relations between it and the political context in Perú and Latin-America, the author´s trajectory and the discussions inside the literary fields of the country and the region. We will focus in the relation between reality and language that the novel propose, and the way this is related with Arguedas political postures. Before analyzing the novel, we will present, as contextualization, the discussions Arguedas got into a couple of years before the writing of "Los zorros" and the way that debates about "realism" and "avant-garde" appeared in Latin-America and Perú.

This study examined the pragmatic and discursive behavior of the rhetorical strategies that allow for justifying assertive speech acts in the Proyecto para el Estudio Sociolingí¼ístico del Español de España y de América de Santiago de Chile corpus. Three strategies used for justifying in Chilean Spanish were described: justifications as such, explanations and comparisons. This investigation revised the pragmatic and discursive function of the linguistic resources available for justifying in each strategy and also offers a systematization of said resources and, finally, it gives an account of how these strategies work in relation to the functions of mitigation, in which case this research concludes that the strategies under study function as a means for self-protection to safe the speaker's face and/or as prevention for potential threats to the hearer's face.

This essay is about the section of Poema de Chile by Gabriela Mistral dedicated to the Magallanes region. Taking into account historical and biographic information, as well as some Mistral's public and private writings, the aim is to understand the relevance of the period the poet spent in Punta Arenas for the recognition of Chile as a personal and collective homeland to her during her "exile" abroad. The hypothesis consists in the idea that it is possible to appreciate, in that section of the work, a utopic impulse that projects the future of the national community (impersonated by the Diaguita child) on Magallanes and, at the same time, the slipping and dissolving of the poetic subject (impersonated by the mother) into the natural elements. The analysis shows that both aspects firmly mingle together and stem from their own impossibility, generating a paradox that stands at the core of Mistral's artistic and personal project.

This article develops a comparative analysis concerning Gabriela Mistral's poetic version of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty written between 1924 and 1928, recently reedited by Amanuta. Drawing criteria from the ethics of care I propose a critical reading guided by Mistral's avant-garde view of children's rights and the status of Latin American women in the 1920s decade.

The purpose was to check whether Yunior, character/narrator in three short stories by Junot Díaz (2012), reduces the use of codeswitching (Cs) to Spanish (his first language, L1) from the first chronological story to the third one: "Invierno", "Nilda", and "The Pura Principle", respectively. We hypothesize a reduction in the number of words used in his mother tongue and a decrease in emotional words, implying a change in his emotional identity. (Costa et al., 2017; Dewaele, 2010; Ferré et al., 2010; Pavlenko, 2008). From the latter, we qualitative and quantitatively analyzed Yunior's Cs to L1. A change in Yunior's emotional identity could not be found probably due to the small size of the vocabulary corpus and the lack of emotional ratings for many of these words. Yunior keeps using Cs to his L1 for family and intimate matters in the three stories and English when seeking detachment.

La resta by Alia Trabucco Zerán (Santiago de Chile, 1983) can be read from a class tension that is mobilized by means of certain affective tones inscribed in the bodies of its protagonists. Trabucco advances a dialectic between Felipe and Iquela which will occur between two dimensions that confront them and engage them to dialogue, based on a politics of emotions. Firstly, their corporealities; which will always have a mobile attribute, opened and merged with writing. Secondly, a social class problem that determines its courses. This friction thus produces a scheme of adding subtraction, or of subtracting sum: dialogical operations which will allow to process the weight of history and death.

This paper analyzes a group of essays by Chilean women writers from 1890, whose texts can be considered "gender essays", given the way they reflect upon women's role in society. Hence, I aim to shed light on the works of these writers by analyzing the strategies they developed in order to position themselves within the literary field and the public space; as well as their different perspectives on women's issues. The idea is to contribute to the articulation of a female literary genealogy in terms of gender essay and feminist thinking in Nineteenth Century Chile.

A corpus of poems from female writers Rayen Kvyeh, Damsi Figueroa and Adriana Paredes Pinda is analyzed in this article using an approach related to ecofeminism, wherein a discourse is constructed that advocates for the conservation of the rivers and seas of Wallmapu within the framework of post-dictatorial Chile. From a standpoint of decolonizing awareness aligned with the Mapuche epistemology and ethics, the poetic voices critically highlight the sovereignty of death wielded by extractivist capitalism on the Mapuche territory and its biodiversity, thus underscoring the indigenous notion of water and politically reframing the bonds between women and nature. Keywords: Water, Poetry, Women, Mapuche, Nature.
