Resumen
Thirteenth-century legal and regulatory texts established that the office of notary-public be held by laymen and not by the clergy, renewing an old Carolingian ban reiterated by pope Innocent III in a decretal dated 1213. The author reviewed materials previously used in his doctorate thesis on the birth and development of notariate and public instrument in Portugal (1212-1279) – essentially originals issued by notaries-public – and looked for data concerning the accumulation of the notarial office and the clerical status, while trying to ascertain whether such accumulation was incompatible and if at that time there was awareness on this in the Portuguese territory.

Resumen
The codex nr. 3634 of the Fondo Latino in the Vatican Library, a Latin biography of D. Fernando (1402-1443), which is essentially a hagiographical work, with a central historiographical section, dedicated to the conquest of Tange, may have been sent to Rome in order to acquire D. Fernando’s canonization. The linguistic, stylistic and literary studies enable us to set a high value upon the literary level of this work and upon the deep learning and literary skills of its author. D. Fernando’s Latin biography is also important to clarify or to ratify the historical information of that period confirming the lack of truth in Rui de Pina’s statements. The final section examines some related matters – the datt – between 1451 and 1470/71 – and the authorship of the work (probably a Franciscan friar). A picture of D. Fernando in the Cod Vat. Lat. 3634 provided also the occasion to discuss D. Fernando’s iconography reinforcing the fernandin thesis of Nuno Gonçalves’s famous Polyptych.

Resumen
Analysis of the influence exerted by authors pertaining to the Order of St. Francis on Leal Conselheiro, the major literary work of the Portuguese king Duarte (1391-1438). In the beginning of the article the structure of this didactic treatise is presented in order to enable a contextualised reading of the various Franciscan passages used by Duarte. The importance of the fourth part of Leal Conselheiro is emphasized due to evidence of possible Franciscan collaboration in its writing. After a listing of all Franciscan authors and works quoted by Duarte that have been partially or totally identified, the article focuses on how they are distributed through Leal Conselheiro, on the way they are quoted and on how Duarte came across these works. As a sign of what remains to be done in this line of research we give some data on the little known circulation of Viridarium Principum, a speculum written by Andrea de Pace, the provincial of Sicily, till it came to Duarte’s library.

Resumen
This article syntethizes the conclusions of a further research on Flos Sanctorum of 1513. Using elements of material bibliography the edition is to be found in the typographical activity of its period. A stemma codicum is suggested, which represents the relationship with other peninsular translations of Legenda Aurea, revisiting previous critical bibliography and specifying some aspects of the knowledge about the antecedent. Its contents is compared with that of the castilian translation (La Leyenda de los Santos, 1499) in order to know the portuguese translator’s interference, fulfilled mostly in the adding of 19 Extravagantes. The fonts used in S. Antony’s Life and in S. Anne’s Life are pointed out and eventual authorship of the other texts is discussed. At last, the work of the translator is characterized and framed in its historic-cultural context.

Resumen
Based on a more global work about the Lords of Braga Chancery, the present study approaches the organization of this institution since its origins until the end of the episcopacy of D. Silvestre Godinho. In absence of nomination letters to “notaries” or chancellors, or a description of the functioning of the archiepiscopal chancery, it was attempted, from the individuals that we know have been connected to the elaboration of episcopal acts, to detect the evolution of the institution through the analysed period.

Resumen
Bronchoa aspiration is one of the most feared complications by anesthesiologists throughout the perioperative period. For more than a century, in order to avoid this complication, preoperative fasting has been implemented, a period in which the patient does not eat food to decrease the gastric content. The purpose of this article is to review the highlights and current aspects of preoperative fasting. For which a manual and digital search was carried out in different databases such as MEDLINE, Scielo, IBECS and Cochrane, with the following descriptors: preoperative fasting, fasting effects. When the concept of preoperative fasting arises the patient had to spend more than 8 hours without feeding, causing this not only feeling hungry, thirsty, irritating, but also causing serious endocrine-metabolic alterations. According to the latest recommendations, based on scientific evidence, it is advised to follow the following times of surgical fasting: 2 h for clear liquids, 4 h for breast milk, 6 h for cow's milk, 8 h for solids. In conclusion, it is considered that an extended period without ingesting food before surgery far from being beneficial is deterreal for the patient's good prognosis.
