Resumen
During the 17th century, there is a steady increase of references to emergency baptism in Spain. These references facilitate important insights into the circumstances of childbirth. The data reviewed in this paper mostly stems from the parish registers of San Justo y Pastor and San Pedro de Barajas, and they cover the years from 1611 to 1663. This information reveals some tendencies regarding the number and ratio of infants born in precarious conditions. Moreover, they enable us to widen the biographies of outstanding birth assistants who were active at that time. Interrogations carried out by the parish priest at the baptismal font widen our understanding of birthing scenarios and the actions of midwives. We conclude that the problem of baptism might help to grasp the relevance of religious preoccupations at all stages of procreation and obstetrical care.

Resumen
The end of the Peloponnesian War conferred on the Spartans the political hegemony over Hellas and the option of interfering beyond Greek border areas. However, the 4th century BC also was a witness of the tensions’ aggravation within the ruling elite of Sparta and the union of various states against the Spartan domain. This paper tries to analyse, through the study of ancient sources and with the support of investigations from modern historiography, the influence exerted by religion in Sparta up to the Battle of Leuctra, both in its foreign policy and in the various internal political struggles.

Resumen
The Ohara Museum of Art in Japan preserves The Annunciation by El Greco, which was purchased on 1922 in Paris. During the Meiji era (1868-1912), the Japanese painters with western style focused their attention on France as a pictorical reference. At the same time, the re-evaluation of El Greco began in France and gradually was spread throughout Europa. This paper attempts to show the historical itinerary in which those Japanese painters discovered El Greco through their contemporary French painters and, finally, came to interpret El Greco’s works by their own context.

Resumen
The Royal Preacher Jerónimo de Florencia (1565-1633) delivered two sermons as part of the funeral honors celebrating the decease of the Queen, the first one in San Jerónimo el Real on November 18th, 1611, and the second one in Santa María on December 19th, in the same year. In both of them, the figure of Queen Margarita, who died during the confinement, is glossed over. In these sermons, Margarita de Austria is presented through what it could called the “official truth”, as is appropriate in texts of this kind of nature. She is lauded as a sacred being: to such an extent that she is presented as sweet company for the King; as a loving mother to her children; as a pious queen for her lieges and, last but not least, as a solid pillar of the Church, among other aspects highlighted by this important royal preacher from his privileged vantage point of power. In this article we study the first of these sermons.
