This research analyzes the social perception of the natural and cultural heritage (mainly archaeological) between key sectors of San Andrés Tuxtla and Catemaco, Veracruz, in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve. Methodologically, we apply semi-structured interviews to diagnose training needs on natural and cultural heritage to producers of tourism goods and services and public officials, and we carry out workshops with a collaborative approach to raise awareness, revalue and reactivate aspects of tangible and intangible culture that promote tourism products aimed at conserving natural and cultural heritage. The results show unequal perceptions of natural and cultural heritage, as well as a recognition of the potential that culture and heritage elements represent, the use of which can be beneficial to local and regional economies, provided that there is transversal participation of the sectors involved. We conclude that it is necessary to assess culture for its inclusion in training programs on sustainable cultural tourism, to strengthen the link between government sectors, private sector, local population, academics and tourists, emphasizing the importance of reactivating and reinforcing the identities of a society settled in a culturally and ecologically rich territory.

This paper aims to provide evidence on how the concurrence of multiple carbon markets in Mexico that differ in regulation ―highly regulated, semiregulated, unregulated― can affect the ability of actors to coordinate their actions. It follows the implementation of a carbon-offset project in Mexico called Scolel Te over time. Based on the social exchange theory, we show that the concurrence of multiple carbon markets with different degrees of regulation can influence the tactics or competitive strategies of actors in the network. In particular, it encourages changes in actors’ strategies (balancing operations) in the network to minimize regulatory costs and to become competitive by attracting financial resources to the project. Another finding is that the emergence of an unregulated local carbon market in Mexico creates unintended incentives for actors to adopt less environmentally responsible strategies and avoid participation in more environmentally responsible markets, such as Clean Development Mechanisms (CDMs).

This article systematizes the conceptions, beliefs, and knowledge that frame the capture tactics with which the captains of Seybaplaya, Campeche, Mexico, face environmental variability. The information was collected with ethnographic methods (semi-structured interviews, informal talks, and participant observation) and allowed to describe that the fishing maneuvers of the fishermen are not only determined by the seasonal abundance of the species, but also by the effect of currents, tides, phases of the moon, and biological elements such as the presence of algae and bioluminescence. Despite the fact that the present research does not reveal exact calculations of such parameters on their catches, by understanding the motivations that frame the fisherman's decisions, the parameters that must be considered to establish predictive models of the distribution of the gear and the fleet are qualitatively assigned, and therefore more precise calculations of fishing extractions and their distribution.

In the first decade of the 21st century in Argentina, there has been a notable increase in environmental conflicts, a large part of them centered around water. At the same time, there were important advances in the institutionalization of the environmental paradigm. In this article, we analyzed the level of effectiveness of these institutional advances in one of the metropolitan basins of Greater Buenos Aires: the Matanza-Riachuelo river, which has been the scene of an emblematic conflict at the international level. The intervention of the Supreme Court of National Justice in this conflict, whose objective is to repair the environmental damage, has contributed to the implementation of the integral management of water resources. However, eleven years after the court ruling, we maintain that the need for coordination between the various levels of justice administration, including international, is essential, as well as respect for the basic principles of law such as legality. The methodology used was the analysis of the content of national legislation and official publications of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic articles, and international newspapers and magazines. Likewise, key witnesses and experts were interviewed.

Although some art critics and historians predicted the end of painting during the 20th century, the evidence of the good state in which the medium is found has served to increase the meaning of painting and its expressive possibilities, expanding the limits of this field and combining it with different disciplines without any prejudice. In this article we approach the work of two artists who maintain close ties with the cities of Barcelona and Paris, Xavier Escribà and Miquel Mont. Our spirit is not to reflect the coincidences between the two artists but to claim the innovation of their own professional career.

Using as a starting point the artwork from a group of contemporary artists whose language is grounded on handicraft techniques, this article puts forward several reflections on the art production process and its impact on the act of seeing—in particular, creative processes which, by dissolving the watertight categories of arts, handicrafts, and design, focus on the sensory qualities of materials, rein in rational control on the act of making, and result in artwork which can only be understood beyond discourse. Drawing from ideas that are central to the writings of Juhani Pallasmaa, Richard Sennett, Byung-Chul Han, and Doris von Drathen, this article discusses various theoretical questions underlying the work of the aforementioned artists. They all point towards the possibility of an artistic practice that represents an ethics rooted in detachment and silence.
