The disease known as Covid-19 was declared a pandemic at the beginning of 2020, substantially attacking the respiratory system of those infected. The progressive respiratory failure generated by the disease even leads to death in severe stages of the disease. Due to this alteration some users may require mechanical ventilation. Much research links intubation to dysphagia. The Speech Therapist is the one who helps in the rehabilitation of swallowing disorders, the objective of this research was to review specialized literature to gather information on the Role of the Speech Pathologist in the Treatment of Dysphagia in High Clinic Users due to (Covid-19). A specific search was carried out in the databases PubMed, Science direct and in the Virtual Health Library (BSV). The key term Mesh “Covid-19” was used then the intersection boolean “AND” and the key term Mesh “Dysphagia” then the intersection boolean “OR” and the key term Mesh “Swallowing Disorder”. A total of 42 articles in distributed as follows: PubMed (14), ScienceDirect (7), BSV (21). In the present investigation only articles corresponding to experimental studies, quasi-experimental studies, case studies, bibliographic reviews were included, clinical trials, where the role of the speech therapist in the work of dysphagia in patients with clinical discharge after having had Covid-19 is observed. The results obtained relate prolonged intubation to dysphagia, although the articles found are not enough to make a generalization, added to the fact that the quality of the articles found does not have the expected level of evidence, despite that, the results found confirm the speech pathologist specializing in orofacial motor skills as a relevant actor both in the evaluation and in the intervention of users who have dysphagia due to prolonged intubation by Covid-19.

Rauwolfia vomitoria Afzel. is an antipsychotic plant used by several African communities in the management of psychiatric conditions with good outcomes. Concerns about its dosages on brain activity lead to this investigation of its action on the hippocampal microstructure. Twenty-four adult male Wistar rats of average weight 200 g, were assigned into four groups (n = 6): control; 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg body weight of RV root bark extract, respectively. The administration was once daily, and orally for seven days. Daily observation of the animals was done till on day eight when they were sacrificed after deep anaesthesia. Each brain was processed for histology and immunohistochemical studies. Animals in the 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg RV groups appeared generally dull and drowsy, and barely fed. Their hippocampal histology showed neuronal atrophy and karyorrhexis, with no difference in cell count, although the pyramidal cell numbers decreased in the 300 and 400 mg/kg RV groups. Neuron-specific enolase decreased in the 400 mg/kg RV group, while neurofilament decreased in all test groups. Glial fibrillary acidic protein expression and density increased in the 200 and 300 mg/kg RV groups, but not the 400 mg/kg RV group, all compared with the control group. The given doses of RV root bark extract in adult Wistar rats showed sedative activities with hippocampal histopathological changes, which may not be reversible, thereby leading to the hippocampal functional deficit.

The Inferior Hypogastric Plexus (PHI) is a difficult plexus to define and dissect, hence the ease with which it can be injured both in anatomical and surgical research. Defining its relationships, with respect to the endopelvic fascia (FEP), including its formation and  branches, (Baader B., et al., 2003, p. 129) would facilitate their dissection. This anatomical investigation aims to standardize different portions that require a different approach to preserve their integrity. Cadaveric material belonging to the Third Chair of Anatomy of the School of Medicine, Buenos Aires University was used. One (n=1) formolized male adult organ block and seventeen (n=17) hemipelvis were dissected: five (n=5) adult male hemipelvis formolized, nine (n=9) fetal hemipelvis formolized (7 male and 2 female), between 18 and 36 weeks of gestational age calculated by femoral length, and three (n=3) adult hemipelvis from fresh cadavers, two (n=2) female and one (n=1) male. Microdissection elements and magnifying glasses were used. We were able to distinguish three different sectors: the first, preplexual, located posterior and lateral to the FEP, where the sympathetic components (hypogastric nerves) and the parasympathetic (pelvic splanchnic nerves) have not yet converged to form the plexus. A second sector, plexual, with the plexus already fully formed, located in the thickness of the FEP. Finally, its terminal portion, already devoid of the FEP, formed by nerves that go to the perineal membrane accompanied by arterial and venous vessels. Each of these sectors requires a different approach in both anatomical and surgical dissection.

The aging process is accompanied by demands and adaptations of the body to improve the quality of life, including the maintenance of the individual’s diet. Eating difficulties can be minimized in the face of health promotion actions linked to popular knowledge. The objective to know the perception of the elderly about swallowing in the aging process and to verify the presence of myths and truths that pervade this topic. Qualitative research of the type of participatory action research, articulated with the Research Itinerary of Paulo Freire. It was carried out in four Culture Circles, with eight elderly participants, between the months of October and December 2018, and the stages of thematic research, coding and decoding were carried out simultaneously with the critical unveiling, such as the methodology Freireana foresees the analytical process. The thematic investigation revealed 32 generating themes that culminated in three significant themes, namely: (a) Myths and truths related to choking, (b) Understanding and perception of swallowing difficulties, and (c). Swallowing Care, Discussed Across Cultural Circles. The elders participated actively, speaking about their beliefs regarding swallowing and the factors that can lead to choking, as well as the methods used by them to unblock themselves. It was possible to notice that the elderly has beliefs that were transmitted to them culturally and that they use them in a natural and adaptive way to compensate for their difficulties. The participants demonstrated understanding of the intrinsic aspects that influence the act of swallowing, as well as the importance of a coordinated and conscious action, so that the consequences derived from presbyophagia do not develop over time.

The work of the speech therapist with patients undergoing Bariatric Surgery (BS) is still little explored, although essential for the adequate preparation of the subject for surgery, as well as for his short and long term recovery. Given its importance and it’s still limited performance in this scenario, the objective of this study was to verify the perception of patients about the importance and effectiveness of speech therapy both in the pre and postoperative period of BS. Questionnaires were carried out with 44 patients divided into 4 groups, according to the moment of bariatric surgery follow-up. Most of the subjects were unaware of the role of the speech therapist at the beginning of the treatment, but they considered their guidance and their presence in the team relevant during the process. The ignorance of the role of the SpeechLanguage Pathologist in the care of bariatric patients is related to the incipient participation of Speech-Language Pathologists in this scenario. The positive impact of speech therapy guidelines in the preoperative period improves quality of life, provides information and clarifies subjects’ doubts and fears, enhancing results and minimizing postoperative problems. The professional’s guidance in relation to the aspects experienced in the patients’ daily lives implies a consensus on the importance of the participation of the Speech Therapist during the process of monitoring the BS. Patients’ perception of the importance of the guidelines received by the Speech-Language Pathologist was well-known, as well as their necessary participation in the multidisciplinary team. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of speech therapy both in the pre and in the short and long term postoperative period.

Children and youth with special health care needs, belongs to a group of individuals presenting several health issues of variable complexity and special care needs in health, one of them a successful dental treatment. The high prevalence of oral pathologies is not the only complication we found in dental attention; there are also behaviour and communication disorders, affecting the cooperation level in dental treatment. In spite of the limitations previously mentioned, different adaptations and techniques have surged in order to achieve a successful dental treatment. In this article we describe animal assisted therapy as a useful complementary method for pediatric dental treatment. Objective: Describe the experience of animal assisted therapy in pediatric dentistry treatment of children and youth with special health care needs. Methods: Descriptive-retrospective study performed in 2019, revision of 32 clinical digital records of Hospital, of children and youth with special health care needs, ages between 4-13 years old, and their pediatric dentistry treatment records with animal assisted therapy. Results: 32 patients with dental treatment, in 26 patients (81.25%) dental treatment was successful; 36 dental procedures were performed, 19 invasive and 17 non invasive. Conclusion: The implementation of animal assisted therapy as a complement of pediatric dentistry treatment had a high acceptance and allowed successful invasive and non invasive dental procedures in children and youth with special health care needs.

In healthcare, phenomena which are frequent and expected in a given community or culture are considered normal. However, the criteria currently used to determine when speech sound interventions should be performed do not adhere to this standard, and do not take into account patients’ psychosocial characteristics, but rather continue to follow the biomedical model. After a review of the relevant literature, we propose that new criteria for speech sound evaluation and intervention are needed. We argue that such criteria should be developed by a multidisciplinary group made up of experts in healthcare, education and the social sciences, using a descriptivist framework and adhering to the biopsychosocial model.

In a recently published article, Andrea Porzionato et al, they expose the relevance of Forensic Clinical Anatomy as a tool in judicial strata when there are medical-legal implications for suspected child abuse and the presence of anatomical variants and traumatic injuries that at any given time are difficult to differentiate. A case is reported where the careful dissection of a minor’s body reveals a congenital malformation of the genital-urinary tract that causes repeated urinary tract infections resulting in sepsis and death, based on this description and the context of death is determined that death is associated with child abuse from lack of medical attention.

Proper advice regarding home-based care of normal infants is no less important than managing critical diseases. Otherwise parents tend to follow traditional practices running in the family which are often deleterious. Clinicians must also be aware of the faulty traditional practices so that they can actively enquire them in the child’s history. The author enlisted various such faulty traditional practices as experienced by him during his OPD practice in various public and corporate hospitals over a period of five years. Topics relating mainly to the infant age group have been chosen for this article. Relevant search was done on these topics in standard paediatric textbooks, journals, and websites (like WHO, NICE, AAP) to find the validity of these practices as well as the standard recommendations on these topics. It was found that the standard recommendations often differ from the traditional practices. Detailed text was included from various authentic sources regarding few dubious topics related to home-based infant care. Clinicians should be aware of the correct recommended methods regarding the day to day homebased infant care. They should counsel the parents accordingly so as to avoid any harm caused by faulty traditional practices and social beliefs.

There are various anatomical conditions or mucogingival alterations that can affect the normal functioning and the gingival aesthetics of teeth and dental implants. Although the treatments of these conditions have been traditionally performed with a scalpel, technological development has allowed that they can be now performed with lasers. There are different types of lasers, being the diode one of the most used due to its smaller size, portability, easy configuration, and lower cost. The laser has become more popular in soft tissue surgeries due to its multiple benefits: shorter operating time, control of bleeding and hemostasis, reduction in the amount of anesthesia, possibility of not requiring sutures, and minimization of post-surgical pain and inflammation. The purpose of this work is to present the resolution of three clinical cases which underwent labial frenectomy procedures, removal of gingival melanosis and resection of irritative fibroma using diode laser. To develop all the procedures, a 940 nm diode laser equipment (Biolase®, USA) was used with a power that varied between 2 and 2.5 W in continuous mode, using a 300 µm tip (E 3-4), which was activated before starting. After surgery, biostimulation was carried out to reduce postoperative pain and edema using the pain tip at 4 W for 30 seconds at a distance of 1 cm directly in the operated area in all cases. In all cases, the diode laser allowed a successful result. The procedure was safe, the technique was simple, and the clinical time was short. The postoperative period occurred with the absence of pain or discomfort, generating greater patient satisfaction. It should be noted that the technique depends on the skill of the professional who performs it.
