Agroecological principles crystalize in the productive management of the backyard of Totonac houses, whose practices set nature and humans at the center of their traditional knowledge to produce food. This research was carried out in the community of Lipuntahuaca, municipality of Huehuetla, Puebla, Mexico, located at the heart of the Totonac region, aiming to know the characteristics surrounding the food production for self-consumption in Totonac households. Information was obtained through questionnaires applied to a probabilistic sample in 77 households. The results reveal that the backyard is used for the production of food and medicinal plants as well as for livestock raising (poultry and pigs), mainly intended for family feeding. Besides this, it constitutes an important space for the performance of traditional celebrations related to this ethnic group’s worldview.

In Mexico, propolis is offered for its antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity, so it is necessary to perform its analysis using quality standards. The objective of the present study was to determine the chemical composition of eight propolis from different municipalities of the states Estado de Mexico, Michoacan, Guanajuato, Veracruz, and Puebla. To demonstrate its biological activity, the antioxidant activity was evaluated, and with reference strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans the antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The samples from the municipalities of the states Estado de Mexico and Michoacan presented flavonoids, phenols, and terpenes which confer both an increased antioxidant activity and antimicrobial action. Samples from the municipalities of the states of Puebla, Veracruz, and Guanajuato contain terpenes in low quantities, resulting in decreased biological activity and non-compliance with quality specifications. The importance of studying the chemical composition of propolis associated with its biological activity in specific tests was demonstrated.

The current model of economic development in the Bajio of Guanajuato, based on industrial and manufacturing production, was implemented by the state government seeking to make the use of its biotic and abiotic resources more efficient, to obtain products of greater added value than agriculture and livestock. However, the supposed benefits of this policy generate serious doubts in many specialists about its viability. Therefore, this work seeks to determine how this industrialization has impacted on different environmental, social, economic, and hydrological parameters in the municipalities of Celaya, Irapuato, Leon, Salamanca and Silao through a study of their historical data to observe their behavior over time, with the intention of determining the possible improvements and imbalances generated in them. The results obtained, allow to conclude the need to rethink this model of economic development due to the various levels of deterioration that municipalities have in many parameters, especially in hydric parameter.

Official records indicate that in Jalisco, Mexico, the diagnosis of breast cancer (BC) in women is usually performed at advanced stages. Using geo-referenced data of patients treated at a third-level hospital, the magnitude and spatial-temporal variation associated with late clinical stage (IIb, IIIa, IIIb, IIIc, IV) by municipality of residence was identified during 2013-2015. The municipalities of Acatic, Atoyac and Zapotlanejo showed an increase in the estimated rate for this period, whose value was 44.6, 17.7 and 19.2 per hundred thousand women older than 20 years of age, respectively. In addition, the risk of late-stage breast cancer increased up to four times and in accordance to the patient’s municipality of residence. The results show the municipalities where it is required to improve the detection and diagnosis of BC and, especially, to guarantee an early treatment for women who reside in the places of higher risk, in compliance with the guidelines established in the NOM 041-SSA2-2011.

To determine the existence of the seasonal and cyclical component in the wholesale price of oranges, a price analysis was carried out at the supply centers of Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey from September 2000 to August 2017. The results indicate that the seasonal index reaches its maximum value between June and September in the three supply centers. The maximum differences between the real price and the seasonally adjusted price indicate the presence of a strong seasonal component. Moreover, six cycles with an average duration of 18, 16, and 18 months for the three supply centers were also detected. To avoid the volatility in the price of oranges, it is recommended to plan the production in space and time, as well as to promote the industrialization of oranges.

Financial auditing has been considered a reliability tool in resource management, although it has generated distrust due to its shortcomings. The objective of this research is to analyze the perception of Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) regarding the benefits generated by financial auditing as a tool for competitiveness. Using an interpretative and transversal method, some factors were identified such as the existence of a relationship between the conceptualization of auditing and the fear of its applicability, as well as a tendency to confuse the term financial audit with fiscal audit. Results suggest that when the SME are aware about the benefits of financial audit and its differences with fiscal audit, they value it and are more willing to voluntarily obtain substantial benefits that contribute to business management. In addition, the company owner’s academic studies and the age of the organization significantly influence in the willingness to have a financial audit.

This study poses two objectives: to determine whether the growth of females and males of the C. viridis is isometric, and whether the commercial fishing changes the condition of snook. The information regarding the length-weight relationship (LWR) is basic for the development of management strategies and conservation of the white snook. The length-weight relationship condition analysis is presented for the snook C. viridis fishery in the north coast of Nayarit. A non-experimental, longitudinal aleatory study was performed. Data was obtained during a six-year period (2010-2015). The weight, total length and sex of 2542 organisms were recorded. The LWR of males from 2010 to 2015 indicated negative allometric growth (p < 0.05), while the females indicated positive allometric growth (p < 0.05). However, the overall analysis LWR for males and females in the whole sampling period (2010-2015) showed negative allometric: b = 2.958 (p < 0.05) and r2 = 0.948. Regarding the analysis of condition, results indicated a value of Kn ≥ 1 in males; females presented a condition lower than 1, which indicated sex-change from male to female. In response to the fishing pressure, the C. viridis has readjusted year after year the minimum size of sex switching, generating slight variations of Kn in females of the C. viridis in the studied area.

Currently, overweight and obesity are life-threatening health problems. Although there are studies in this regard, there are few that comprehensively and specifically address the related habits, thoughts, and attitudes. For this reason, this research analyzes the relationship between the habits and attitudes of adolescents with anthropometric indicators according to sex. A total of 673 secondary school students participated in the study. They answered a sociodemographic and school data sheet, as well as the Overeating Questionnaire (OQ), which has an index and internal consistency from 0.65 to 0.87 in the Mexican population. Weight, height, and circumference measurements were taken. The results show that both women and men with BMI > 29.9 experience cycles of food intake (r = 0.120, p < 0.05; and r = - 0.153, p < 0.01, respectively), rationalize their weight (r = 0.239, p < 0.01; and r = 0.387, p < 0.01) and show interest in losing weight (r = 0.533, p < 0.01; and r = 0.497, p < 0.001). The presence of overweight and obesity in adolescents contributes to the desire to lose weight and to resort to low-calorie strategies, so it will be important to promote healthy habits in students.

In the high mountains of Mexico, the climatological records above the tree line are almost non-existent. In this work, the air and ground surface temperatures were observed during two years at four different altitudes between the upper limit of the forest and the lower limit of the glacier on the northern slope of the Pico de Orizaba volcano. The results indicate a strong air-ground correlation in the lower altitudes whose intensity tends to decrease with altitude as well as thermal oscillation. The insulating action of the snow causes the temperature of the ground to remain almost constant during its presence, which influences the index of correlation with the air. Considering the near permanence of the ice-thaw cycles and the low thermal oscillation in the limits of the glacier, it is observed that the temperature remains close to the freezing point at this altitude during the year.
