This article studies the wax figures in natural size with physiognomic features and costumes of ancient times, which were part of the “reconstructions of objective scenes” of the Historical and Colonial Museum of Buenos Aires Province, opened in 1923. We propose to rebuild the context upon which the Museum added them, analyse the complexity of these devices as museographical resources, and establish the impact they produced on public inside and outside the institution. We consider that these objects allow us to observe at least three historiographical problems of greater magnitude in connection with material culture: the interaction of individuals with devices made for diverse uses and purpose, the mechanisms through which objects change or accentuate their original meanings depending on the intentions of the agents who question them in specific contexts, the ability of devices to recover previous social experiences capturing intangible collec­tive expressions and manifestations.

In this article, the researcher intends to create a historical record of the formation of the folk collection, a part of the Heritage Reserve of the “Museo de Antropología de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba” (UNC), with a focus on the musicology section: the institutional policies that led to these practices of collection and configuration of the heritage archive; the theory and methodology implicated in the formation of the musicological section; and the trajectory of this section as part of the valuing of the local cultural heritage. This work is based on the case of the “Instituto de Antropología, Lingüística y Folklore” (IALF), and its analysis seeks to contribute to the reflection on the relationship between folklore and national identity, during the period between 1941 and 1956.

Different women of the first half of the 19th century, mostly belonging to the Buenos Aires elite, wore various garments on their bodies, such as dresses, capes, robes, mantillas, which decades later were donated to one of the main historical museums of Argentina, the National Historical Museum. In this article, we intend to study these garments as objects that reflect not only the daily lives of the time in which they were used, but also how those objects became pieces worthy of being a testimony for national history. Another of our objectives with this article is to generate new knowledge about the women of the past, which enriches the current museological scripts. In addition, we seek to add a type of material source to the study of clothing that allows a different contribution on the circulation of these garments, as well as to inquire about symbolic and political dimensions that emerge from their use.
