Resumen
The article analyzes representations of fashion on a set of newspapers published in Buenos Aires in the 1860s and the 1870s. After describing the main characteristics of the press developed in this period, the paper focuses on analyzing the fashion illustrations that were published in some newspapers, and the texts that coexisted with those images. The article explores ambiguities and tensions between texts and images. Therefore, we argue that fashion had a renewed place on the press: fashion illustrations not only transmitted Paris’ fashion in Buenos Aires, but also communicated a life-style associated with the bourgeoise-feminine; meanwhile the images’ descriptions attempted to adapt them to local reality. Additionally, in the chronicles about fashion, some other voices warned about the dangers that fashion and its consumption could bring to women and their families.

Resumen
This essay focuses on the influence that French patterns had on the elite of nineteenth-century Santiago society, especially on topics such as fashion and within them hairdressing and grooming. This theme is revealed as a powerful source to deepen and evaluate the patterns of taste that united the dominant social group and its exhibitionist cares in a world of appearances.

Resumen
This article seeks to approach the study of the Colegio Libre de Estudios Superiores through the reconstruction of its specific institutional experience, the characterization of its cultural policy and its relations with the partisan world. The documentary exploration shows that the regional dimension constituted both a fundamental theoretical axis and a tool for the projection and expansion of intellectual initiative since 1940. This is observed, particularly, in the analysis of the trajectory of the subsidiary located in Bahía Blanca, southwest of the province of Buenos Aires, whose actions stimulated and, simultaneously, were embedded in the strengthening of the spaces of local cultural sociability and in the support of its centrality projects on the northern Patagonia.

Resumen
This article advances on the first policies referred to the tourist promotion of Mendoza in the thirties and its materializations, through the action of the Tourism and Architecture Directorates of the province. We understand that the analysis of the links between the political visions that sought to position the province as a destination and the technical contributions for the construction of tourism equipment, allows placing the actions of the conservative government in Mendoza, as one of the first examples at a national level that marked the transition between the experiences of elite tourism / leisure at the beginning of the 20th century, and the social democratization of this practice during the Peronism.

Resumen
The folk medicine has used various practices in order to cure, such as herbal medicine and magic. Academic medicine searched to discredit folk medicine so it could monopolize the field. One of the causes of the failure of the academic medicine is the cultural component, we refer to the religious aspects used by the folk healers during their healing practice. In this paper we analyze how important was the religion in some cases of folk medicine through judicial records in Buenos Aires province during sixty years.

Resumen
[Introduction]: The expansion of african palm (Elaeis guineensis) and pineapple (Ananas comosus) monocultures in Costa Rica, has progressively degraded the natural environment of the country, standin[i]g out, the region of the Potrero Grande district of Buenos Aires. [Objective]: This study, aims to show the importance of conservation in the Centro Turistico Los Chocuacos (CTLC) reserve, which is a threatened area, and that conserves a forest, between secondary and primary, of approximately 30 years. [Methodology]: In an area of 25 hectares (ha), a floristic inventory was performed by random walks along the forest edge, trails, river, waters springs, and areas not crossed by trails. The botanical specimens were collected in a reproductive state, which were botanized and deposited in the Herbarium Luis A. Fournier Origgi of the University of Costa Rica. [Results]: The CTLC reserve has a floristic wealth of 75 families, 219 genera and 266 species. The results yield important data, such as, a new record for Costa Rica, Eugenia veraguensis, and a species of the genus Aristolochia, that is currently being described as new specie for science. The most representative life form is tree and the habit is mostly terrestrial. The Fabaceae, Rubiaceae and Malvaceae families were the most representative in the study area. [Conclusions]: The study highlights the importance of floristic inventories to increase knowledge of species present in poorly studied areas of the tropics that are also being affected by the disorderly land use change.

Resumen
[Introduction]: CATIE is seeking to optimize the horticultural technique of rooting coffee mini-cuttings for commercial multiplication of hybrids on a massive scale and at low cost. [Objective]: The objective of the study was to determine the effect of different fertilizers and hormonal stimulants on the rooting ability of cuttings and subsequent growth of the resulting plants. [Methodology]: Mini-cuttings of three coffee hybrids were used, treated with different combinations of a biostimulant, a rooting powder, a formula based on multiminerals, vitamins and phytohormones, and three fertilizers (NP, ZnP, hydroponic solution), and set to root in plastic tunnels with irrigation. Rooted plants were transplanted into bags for a 3-month nursery growth period. [Results]: The rooting phase concluded at 12 weeks, with a mean rooting percentage greater than 89 %, without differences between treatments or between hybrids. Significant differences were found between treatments for root length, with superiority of the combination of the rooting powder with the ZnP fertilizer. In the nursery phase, significant differences were found between treatments for plant height, fresh weight of aerial part, and fresh and dry root weight, highlighting in all cases the combinations of the rooting with the multimineral complex or with the ZnP fertilizer. The L12A28 hybrid stood out in almost all the variables evaluated. [Conclusions]: The study showed the importance of using auxinic and nutritional supplements during the rooting phase to optimize the performance of the plants in the nursery. Likewise, it showed the feasibility of the technique of rooting cuttings as a simple and efficient method for the multiplication of the hybrids.

Resumen
[Introduction]: The droughts in Costa Rica are an extreme hydrometeorological event that affects many crops producers and society in general. [Objective]: To define which drought index shows the strongest relationship with drought impacts reports in social and productive sectors for three areas in Guanacaste, province of Costa Rica located within the Central American Dry Corridor (CSC). [Methodology]: A drought impact dataset for the period 1970-1999 was created from different sources of information: Desinventar database, EM-DAT, information from the National Meteorological Institute of Costa Rica and different press reports. This database is compared to the following six drought indexes using the logistic regression technique: the Standardized Precipitation Index at scales of 6 and 12 months (SPI 6 and SPI 12 respectively), the Drought Severity Index and the Hydrological Index of Palmer (PDSI and PHDI respectively), the Drought Recognition Index (RDI), and the Modified Rainfall Anomaly Index (mRAI). [Results]: In general, the most appropriate index to link drought and social and productive impact reports is the SPI for 6 and 12 months. [Conclusions]: In all the areas of study, this index has a high (low) probability of many (zero) impacts when it is in moderately and severely dry (wet) conditions.
