This article reflects on the experience of the Azentún Photography Workshop with Mapuche adolescents from the city of Santiago, around indigenous identity from a contemporary perspective. The research promoted the construction of a story of self-representation of the Mapuche identity, through photography and a critical reading of the Mapuche visual imagery. Some photographs taken by the adolescents were exhibited in the National Historical Museum as a practice that added tension to and offered a new rereading of the official identity narrative in contrast to the micro-accounts of adolescents.

This paper presents different ways to articulate the notions of tradition and modernity in art and architecture according to the contents of number 11 (1936) of Revista de Arte (Academy of Fine Arts at Universidad de Chile) dedicated to Argentina. The analysis focuses on two articles. The first one: “Emilio Pettoruti: brújula de la pintura argentina”, by Leonardo Estarico. The second one: “America y la nueva arquitectura” by Martin Noel. Estarico proposes the concepts of form and plastic as universal territories, while Noel establishes the American continent as an essential source for local art and architecture.

In this text we review the presence of images of motor vehicles, that appear in Argentinian documentaries of the 1940s, and that account for issues such as the territory, the Chilean-Argentinian border or the epic work. La amistad de dos naciones (Sucesos Argentinos, produced by Ángel Díaz, 1942-1943) is analyzed from boundary issues between Chile and Argentina; and El trasandino del Norte (Fernando Ayala, 1949) is analyzed from the figure of the worker. They are also considered, by way of background or contrasts, films of the Argentinian and Chilean silent period, in the latter case, by means of information that exists in the press.

Around 1900, landscape photography in Colombia contributed to create the first images of the region. Its impact on the way of representing space, compared with pictorial techniques, involved the creation of an image that recognized a visual unity. In this investigation, an analysis of nearly 800 photographs of diverse collections related to the landscape in Colombia has been carried out. Thanks to this, it has been possible to interpret how through the production of these images, and their popularization through media such as the postal card, the development of symbolic emblems of places was promoted. Following closely the idea of unity developed by Georg Simmel and deepening through the notion of cliche of Gilles Deleuze and Ruth Amossy, I will analyze how through the visual adaptations of photography landscape acquired the visual form that allowed it to transform a place into an icon in Colombia.

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the procedures and functioning of haptic visuality through images that are mass produced. To achieve that, I will describe and analyze a repertory of Catholic holy cards and devotional stamps that belongs to the National History Museum (Chile), focusing on those featuring The Sacred Heart in some of its variations. I affirm that the haptic character of these images is paramount for the sacred gaze and belief, highlighting those persuasion tactics that these images cast, alike their visual, tactile, and bodily implications.

Starting at the end of the eighteenth century, in the European culture took place a transformation of the concepts of reason and imagination, with the latter being a privileged ability of the human mind for the romantics. In this text, it will be shown examples of the increase in the appreciation of that ability, whose apotheosis can be observed in William Blake’s original aesthetics. The aforesaid artist provides an example of a tendency that was common during various decades, a romantic attitude of which he is the prime example; it will also talk about his influences, neoplatonic thinkers and mystic occultists such as Böhme and Swedenborg.

This article exposes some actualizations of the bakhtinian chronotope of the road in three films of the “young Chilean cinema”. It will start by analyzing the different travelling modalities proposed by these works, based on some notions from contemporary philosophy and tourism studies. It will then identify a discrete series of chronotopical sub-motifs, authentic affective moments, that will lead to a working hypothesis, namely: the characters of the studied films move through a “smooth”, generic space, one of intensities, a milieu where what is primed is “experience”, personal growth and self-discovery.

The objective of this work is to demonstrate that the newspaper Correo de la Exposición (1875), that emerged as a complement of the International Exhibition of Chile in 1875 (Exhibición Internacional de Chile), was an “aesthetic apparatus” (Déotte). The novelty of this work lies in the discovery of the scientific and artistic discourse that deepened the advances obtained in both subjects around 1875. The conclusions of the study indicate that the newspaper Correo de la Exposición imposed its own exhibited rules and mechanisms of appearance in the fine arts, becoming a relevant newspaper for the analysis of Chilean history and artistic critique.

This paper argues the need to reread Hegelian aesthetics based on the transcripts of Hegel’s Berlin lectures on aesthetics. To do this, the differences between these notebooks and the Lectures on Aesthetics edited by Hotho, are exposed and analyzed, showing the most relevant modifications and manipulations that the editor made both on the structure and the content of Hegelian aesthetics. Thus, the analysis begins with the inclusion of the natural beauty in the Lectures on Aesthetics; then, it deals with the systematization and triadic structure of this work; and, finally, the problematic canonical definition of the ideal.
