To correlate functional capacity and self-care in older adults with diabetes.Method: A cross-sectional and quantitative study, carried out with 189 older adults with diabetes mellitus treated at an endocrinology outpatient clinic. The structured instrument to obtain sociodemographic and clinical data, the Barthel Index, and the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire were used. Data was analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Most of the older adults were independent and had high mean values of adherence to self-care. There was a positive correlation with statistical significance between functional capacity and the domains of self-care activities related to physical activity and care with the feet. Conclusions: Functional capacity showed a positive relationship with items related to physical activity and care with the feet. Functional independence in the older adult can influence adherence to self-care practices facing diabetes mellitus. To reference this articleVicente MC, Silva CRR, Pimenta CJL, Bezerra TA, Lucena HKV, Valdevino SC, Costa KNFM. To know how the phenomenon of active paternal upbringing is shown from the father-child contact experience during birth.Method: Analysis of secondary information from a qualitative study of a phenomenological nature. Transcripts of interviews and focus groups of all the fathers who participated in a father-child contact protocol for a doctoral thesis. Results: The study revealed the global structure of the phenomenon, whose central axis corresponds to “father who advances towards the integral connection with his child and is committed with parenting”, and its three comprehensive categories: expectations of being a father and actor in parenting; the experience of being a father at birth time; and the everyday of the upbringing. Conclusion: Prenatal preparation and skin-to-skin contact during birth mobilize the father towards commitment and involvement with the upbringing of his child from the beginning. To reference this article / Para citar este artículo / Para citar este artigoGarcía-Portuguez VA, Muñoz-Serrano M, Uribe-Torres C. La tecnología al servicio de los adultos mayoresA tecnologia ao serviço das pessoas idosasAn increase in longevity almost always implies the manifestation of more health problems, especially chronic diseases. And here, the elderly’s well-being and quality of life may be compromised since their level of dependence on others for everyday activities tends to increase and accentuate. Technologies can play a fundamental role in supporting and helping both the elderly —through telepresence robots that reduce their social isolation— and the informal caregiver —by installing a network of sensors that allow programming alarms for changing position and taking medication, for example—. Therefore, technologies can and should be put at the service of the elderly not to replace the human factor, but as a complement thereto.Para citar este editorial / To reference this editorial / Para citar este editorialRodrigues, VMCP. ¡Necesitamos tutoría en liderazgo!Precisamos de assessoria em liderança!Leadership mentoring is needed in nursing to nurture nurse leaders globally. It requires the selfless giving of our time and insight while encouraging us to be open to a new generation of nurses and nursing vision. In addition, leadership mentoring provides us with opportunities for advocacy for our profession and its worldwide mission. Virtual mentoring communities have been developed through Sigma Theta Tau International (Sigma) and the Roy Adaptation Association (RAA). These engage emerging nurse leaders to contribute to their organizations and to the profession of nursing. From frontline clinical practice, to nursing organizational leadership, to health policy development, leadership mentoring means engaging nursing voice. It means investing the time and talent to nurture and teach leadership in new ways with the next generation. Seeking out opportunities for leadership mentoring is the first step!Para citar este editorial / To reference this editorial / Para citar este editorialBuckner EB. Leadership Mentoring Needed! To identify the available evidence on the necessary information for the families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).Method: An integrative literature review carried out in six databases with specific descriptors for each one. Studies published on the theme between January 2014 and February 2020 available in full and free of charge were selected. For synthesis and analysis of data, thematic categorization was performed. 41 articles were included. Results: Two thematic categories were obtained. In the first category (“need for information”), the families’ lack of knowledge about ASD (treatment, how to deal with the child’s behavior, and future perspectives), rights of the child with ASD, and resources to obtain information were identified. The second category (“information support sources accessed by the families”) comprised informal sources (family members, friends, neighbors, and parents of children with ASD), formal sources (professionals and institutions), the Internet, and other resources (books, workshops, podcasts). Positive and negative aspects were found in the use of these sources. Conclusions: A pattern of information requested by the family was verified, as well as sources used to obtain it. These data are relevant to support the organization of sources of informational support for the families and the community. To identify the factors associated with hospitalizations due to congenital syphilis in neonates, based on the characteristics of prenatal care.Materials and method: A quantitative case-control study, conducted by applying a questionnaire to 65 puerperal women with their babies hospitalized from July to November 2017. The data were analyzed using logistic regression, according to the plan proposed in the hierarchical approach. Results: 20% of the hospitalizations were due to syphilis (cases) and 80% to other causes (control). The vulnerability risk (p = 0.036), previous history of sexually transmitted infection (p = 0,006), use of oral contraceptives (p = 0.011) and parity (p = 0.043) variables were statistically significant. The absence of the partner during the consultation (p = 0.028), failure to perform a rapid test for syphilis (p = 0.035) and educational activity for the partner (p = 0.033) were also associated with the occurrence of the outcome, in addition to the variables of the newborn: low birth weight (p = 0.025), not being on exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.036) and not having had skin-to-skin contact (p = 0.043).Conclusions: Congenital syphilis has several risk factors for its occurrence. It was possible to observe that the assistance inequalities existing in care during the prenatal consultations directly reflect on the occurrence of this condition. To reference this article / Para citar este artículo / Para citar este artigoPitilin EB, Gasparin VA, de Resende e Silva DT, Souza JB, Haag FB. Determinantes psicosociales de la intención de tomar antihipertensivos orales: estudio transversalDeterminantes psicossociais da intenção de tomar anti-hipertensivos orais: estudo transversalObjective: To identify the psychosocial predictors that influence the behavioral intention to take oral antihypertensive drugs.Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study, based on the theory of planned behavior. A questionnaire constructed and validated was applied to 220 individuals with systemic arterial hypertension in outpatient follow-up at a public hospital. The chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, Spearman’s correlation and multiple logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results: The participants presented a high intention of taking antihypertensive drugs. The behavioral beliefs (ß = 0.0432; p = 0.0364), subjective norm (ß = -1.5708; p < 0.01) and perceived behavioral control (ß = 2.2809; p = 0.0028) explained the behavioral intention in 33 %.Conclusions: The behavioral beliefs, the subjective norm, and the perceived behavioral control are significant psychosocial predictors of taking antihypertensive drugs and must be valued, individually and jointly, in the health actions targeted at this population. To analyze the context and use of the Nursing Delirium Screening Scale (Nu-DESC) for early detection of delirium in adult patients, compiling the available evidence.Method: Searching for relevant articles on databases such as Cinahl, Medline, Ovid, Scopus, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria: Articles written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, published between January 2013 and October 2019. Search terms: “nursing delirium screen,” “inpatient delirium screening,” and “nursing assessment.” We identified 23 articles in which the Nu-DESC was used. Two reviewers independently assessed the articles using the CASPe (Critical Appraisal Skills Program in Spanish) tool. Results: The Nu-DESC is employed in different contexts such as the adult intensive care unit (ICU), post-anesthetic care unit (PACU), palliative care unit, and hospitalization unit. It is more frequently used in the PACU with a more sensitive threshold (≥ 1); the test showed greater sensitivity of 54.5 % (95 % CI: 32.2–75.6) and specificity of 97.1 % (95 % CI: 95.3–98.4).Conclusion: The Nu-DESC facilitates the recognition of delirium episodes by the nursing team, makes care quicker and individualized for each patient, avoiding immediate pharmacological interventions, and coordinate interdisciplinary actions for diagnosis, especially in post-anesthetic care units. To identify the influence of life habits and behaviors on the health of adolescents.Materials and method: This is a quantitative research, with an exploratory and descriptive approach, developed with 124 adolescents, students from a pre-professional school in southernmost Brazil. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire. The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics by means of the SPSS software, version 20.0.Results: The high consumption of ultra-processed food in intermediate meals and insufficient sleep hours per night cause risks to the health of adolescents. Practicing physical activities has proved to be a health protection habit. Conclusions: The adolescents need to reframe the importance of healthy eating and sleep in their routine. It was observed that there are modifiable factors for sleep improvement in quality and quantity, as well as the value and inclusion of in natura food in intermediate meals. We believe that the role of nurses in school spaces, giving rise to joint reflections on the process of self-care, health concepts, risky and healthy behaviors, is capable of promoting and protecting the health of adolescents and preventing morbidities in the future. To know the development of the scientific evidence on the uncertainty towards the disease of family caregivers of patients in palliative care.Materials and methods: A descriptive scoping review. A search was conducted in the Embase, ScienceDirect, Medline, Academic Search Complete, Scopus databases, during the 2000-2019 period. The following MeSH terms were used: uncertainty, palliative care, end of life, nursing and caregiver. Fifty articles were selected after the criticism process. Results: Five thematic nuclei emerged: characterization of uncertainty in the caregiver, factors influencing uncertainty, resources to manage uncertainty, uncertainty assessment, and therapies and interventions to approach uncertainty. The higher scale of evidence is found in the characterization of uncertainty in the caregiver, and the voids direct the development of Nursing interventions on the uncertainty of the caregivers of individuals in palliative care. Conclusions: Although the factors influencing uncertainty towards the disease of the caregiver are widely explored, the evidence on the interventions that may help to reduce uncertainty towards the disease is still limited.Para citar este artículo / To reference this article / Para citar este artigoArias-Rojas M, Carreño-Moreno S, Rojas-Reyes J.
