Night is a symbolic and an actual space where physical and cultural otherness meet. Opposite the space lightened by the order, lays chaos, crowded with fictitious beasts and perversions. It doesn`t matter if this encounter happens during the physical darkness, as symbolic night of ignorance is equally dark. The inquiry on the boundaries can be made under the sun light in unknown territories or in the dark shadows of the night through imaginary topographies. This paper displays aspects of the limits of the graeco-roman imaginary in search for its liminal and some other beasts scattered over the historiographical production.

The article analyzes the characteristics of the Genius Populi Romani throughout its history and pays particular attention to developments since the introduction of his worship in 218 B.C., until Theodosius banned the cult in the year 392. The fourth century deserves special consideration, mainly the relationship of Genius with Diocletian, Constantine, Constantius II and Julian.

Women are specially linked with rituals and myths of the night, and particularly with nocturnal Dionysus in many Greek places. In these pages we will focus on some of these feminine nocturnal rites devoted to Dionysus in Athens (Lenaia, Anthesteria and the ritual of Attic Thyades in Delphi), and we will essay to understand them in the contexts of civic developments of the polis linked with the control of feminine behaviour (and their nocturnal exits) in VI century BC.

This paper focuses on the figure of Nyx in Hesiod´s Theogony, and on her feminine offspring. The authors try to analyze if the feminine condition of these night creatures grant them a negative nature in the ancient Greek mentality. They concluded that the night was not considered to be evil, but ambiguous, mysterious and complex.

Denying the existence of God or gods is a common modern phenomenon in different places and religious contexts. This paper explores the possibility of its applicability in antiquity. The last decades have witnessed considerable growth in the study of atheism in antiquity. Analysis of atheistic positions in ancient societies, especially in Classical Athens, has foregrounded new development in the study of unbelief. The term “unbelief ” has been defined as a broad category to study the diverse irreligious positions not merely as the opposite of religion but as part of the religious field. This conceptualisation allows us to understand religion and unbelief as two intermingled phenomena. In recent studies on Plato’s Laws, scholars have identified atheistic groups within Athenian society. This paper aims to apply recent analytical frameworks on religious “individuation” in ancient religions to understand the role of unbelief in religious individualisation in Athens during the last decades of the 5th cent. and the first half of the 4th cent. BCE.
