Communication is essential for assessment and intervention in marital psychotherapy. For that matter, it was investigated whether negative and open marital communication impact the marital adjustment of heterosexual couples. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational, and explanatory study. A total of 231 couples residing in the Southern region of Brazil were assessed. Participants answered the Communication Questionnaire and the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (R-DAS). The data were analyzed on a dyadic basis using the Actor Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) and indicated that negative communication causes a greater impact than open communication in the marital adjustment of husbands and wives, since it caused actor and partner effects. Open communication caused only the actor effect for husbands and wives. The results were discussed in the light of the scientific literature considering the possible implications for the clinical area and for the research.

Self-Rated Health is the product of the interaction between personal characteristics and contextual conditions. It reflects the resources of the person, and it consists in a dynamic evaluation, i.e., a personal judgment that reflects both a point-in-time status and a developmental process. The Developmental Assets® framework provides a holistic approach in to the understanding of development, which focuses on resources that can be explored both at individual and contextual levels, in order to foster a healthy development. The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between adolescents’ Perception of Health and their experience of Developmental Assets. A convenience sample of 503 Portuguese students was evaluated, mean age of 16 years (SD = 1.2), 63% of female gender. Results indicate that better Health Perception is associated with greater experience of Developmental Assets. Results suggest the impact of a subset of Developmental Assets on Health prediction, with Internal Assets being the strongest predictors. Results suggest the theoretical and practical utility of the Developmental Assets® framework for the understanding of Health Perception in adolescents.

In this study we describe the effects of a Music Intervention Program on the Phonological Awareness, PA, of a group of 21 5-year-old Uruguayan children. A quasi-experimental design of pre-post test group comparison was used. At the end of the pre-schooling period, children who participated in the Music Intervention Program performed better in Phonological Awareness tasks than those of the control group. Finally, in order to analyze the reading performance of the subjects, a word-reading test was administered at the end of the first year of school. The analysis showed statistically significant differences between the groups in reading efficiency. The discussion of the results is based on the characteristics of the stimulation program, which was focused on the development of skills related to rhythm, accuracy and duration. The discussion also takes into account reports from current international literature, which asserts that taking part in a Music Intervention Program stimulates the development of PA Skills.

The objective of this work was to analyze the relationship between emotional regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal applied to home school tasks (CR-HST) and emotional management applied to home school tasks (EM-HST) on academic performance (AP) controlling working memory difficulties (WM-diff) in children who finished Primary Education. A self-report questionnaire to assess CR-HST and EM-HST was administered to 119 fourth, fifth and sixth grade children (9 to 11 years old) and two questionnaires to their teachers to assess their AP and WM difficulties. The results showed that EM-HST was associated with the success, academic productivity, mathematics and reading dimensions of AP, even when WM-diff was controlled. There were no significant associations between CR-HST and AP, or any of the strategies on impulse control in academic situations. The results are expected to deepen the understanding of the role of emotional regulation in AP and thus contribute to the content of programs for promoting emotional regulation designed for school contexts.

This study aimed to present the construction and initial evidence of validity of the Scale of Reasons for Continuing to Work in Retirement (EMCTA). 511 mature workers (aged 45 or over) answered a questionnaire sent over the intranet of a large organization in the energy sector. The final scale comprised 44 items and seven dimensions with good adjustment rates. Confirmatory factor analyzes showed that the most relevant dimensions of EMCTA were the relationship with the organization, relationships at work and intellectual development. It is suggested that future investigations aim to test the invariance of this instrument in different groups of mature workers who are planning to remain in the labor market, even after the age of retirement.

The body is essential in forming impressions on someone. When thinking about people with physical disabilities, the body becomes the main marker of difference. In the theoretical foundation of this research, the Theory of Social Representations was used. The objective was to characterize the social representations of the body for 12 men and 12 women with acquired physical disabilities. Semi-structured interviews and a sociodemographic questionnaire were used as instruments. The data were analyzed through Descending Hierarchical Classification and descriptive analysis. The social representations of the body presented two structural axes: health and aesthetics. No significant differences were found in the social representations of the body of men and women. However, some experiential elements were distinct, evidencing maintenance of behavior related to gender roles. It is pertinent to create public spaces that are attentive to the corporal diversity and strategies that stimulate the social and political participation of people with disabilities.
