Evaluating municipalities through opinion polls is a civic act of every democracy. The survey as an instrument allows to collect information that accounts for the perception of the municipalities in relation to the performance of their authorities. This article is based on an opinion survey applied to the Baitoa Municipal Council in the Dominican Republic, seeks to provide a diagnosis that improves its management based on the assessment of its municipalities. The survey is made up of seven items, it is applied in person to a random sample of 260 citizens living in the municipality, according to the Bonilla method (1993). The investigation benefits the elected authorities for the period 2016-2020. The study finds that 69% of those surveyed perceived the current municipal management as good or excellent, where out of every 10 citizens, 6 understand that the greatest strength of the administration was to provide basic services (garbage collection, among others). It stands out that the population understands that the administration reports well and manages its resources well in 41% of the sample and that 34% especially value the repair of communication routes. 51% of those surveyed have expectations that the management could have a continuous improvement in its management. 39% would like the municipal administration to carry out more municipal works in general terms, in particular, 44% of those surveyed would like the repair of communication routes to be privileged.

Several authors have referred that the popularity of Latin American officials has the ability to anticipate the success or defeat of the party in government. The article contrasts the popularity of Dominican presidents with the election results of officialism by checking that the tendency to association also tends to be majority. Because comparative experience shows that the low approval of the representative on duty does not anticipate the party’s defeat in government if the main opposition party is not a credible rule option. The article also discusses the case of the 2012 presidential election ; the verification of empirical indicators of the concept of «opposition is not credible» and the critical review of academic interpretations of the causes of the outcome of the 2012 elections suggest that the opposition also ceases to constitute a credible alternative of government if in the relatively recent past it had a deastrous government performance that dragged the country into a scenario of acute social economic crisis. Finally, comparative experience indicates that the high approval of the representative on duty does not anticipate the success of officialism if internal division affects that political force. We put that explanation to verification and found that the participation of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party in the 2020 presidential election was affected by such a process. The originality of the investigation lies in corroborating that presidential approval is also a robust predictor of the party’s success or defeat in government.

The article is the result of an investigation that proposes to establish differences on the dimensions of self-concept in students who have or have not completed the process of career change at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) according to their gender. The Self Concept Form 5 (AF-5) questionnaire was applied to 100 students, both male and female; 50 of which had gone through a career change, while the remaining 50 had not. Students were selected from INTEC’s plaza following a non-probabilistic sampling. Descriptive and correlational study with a quantitative focus and retrospective approach. The statistical analysis of the data was processed using both SPSS for Windows and Microsoft Excel Office in its 2013 version. The data analyzed demonstrates that the Academic/Occupation dimension is very stable in students that made a career change. It also demonstrates there is a high stability of the physical dimension of the self-concept in female students who did not make career changes and in male students who did undergo the career change process. Finally, it was evident that the academic/labor dimension is not affected by the student’s academic index.

This study sought to verify if the levels of psychological well-being increased in people who had experienced a romantic breakup, after participating in an online group intervention based on Worden’s grief tasks model, and the use of techniques recommended by this author for grief work. The final sample of the study consisted of 12 adult participants, residents of the Dominican Republic. The quantitative data collection was done with the use of the Ryff Psychological Well-being Scales in its Spanish adaptation carried out by Rodríguez-Carvajal et al. (2010). In addition, qualitative data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire. The results show a significant increase in the levels of psychological well-being after the intervention (m = 28.58; t = 5.86, p <0.001). The qualitative findings, classified into five main categories, show the perception of positive changes in the participants, such as the development of empathy with the group members, the change of erroneous ideas that could interfere in the grief process and motivation to continue therapeutic processes. It is recommended to carry out other investigations with a larger sample and with a control group, so that generalizations and definitive conclusions can be made about the effectiveness of the designed and applied program.

Facing a global health emergency requires the emission of avoidance and prevention behaviors that contribute to the reduction of transmission and mortality associated with the outbreak. However, many of the required behavioral responses favor the emergence and maintenance of emotional psychological responses such as anxiety. With the aim of identifying the predictor variables of the psychological responses of the Mexican adult population during the National Health Emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a cross-sectional predictive study was designed with the application of an online survey to a non-probability sample made up of 518 Mexicans. Statistical analysis suggests that the variables age, sex, marital status, occupation, religious beliefs, place of residence, family income, perceived health attitudes and practices, were associated with self-perceptions about the pandemic (R=.531), the emission of prosocial and health/prevention behavioral responses (R=.563) and anxiety (R=.297). It was concluded that the identification of the predictor variables allow to delineate psychological interventions that contribute to the confrontation of the current and future pandemic from a psychosocial, inclusive and sensitive approach to vulnerable groups.

The standard conception of science considers that scientific knowledge implies rational, objective and reliable knowledge. From this perspective, science must dispense with value judgments and scientific knowledge and its applications must be ethically neutral. Thus, scientists and technologists are not morally responsible for the use that is made of the scientific knowledge and applications that they have helped to produce. Commonly, this position is known as the value neutrality thesis of science. This article aims to carry out a critical analysis of this thesis in order to determine to what extent it is possible to speak of axiological neutrality in the scientific field and, consequently, to establish to what extent scientists and technologists are morally responsible for their discoveries. Between others authors, the approaches of Maliandi, Jonas, Postman, and Olivé are taken as reference point. This study adopts a qualitative methodology, based on critical theorizing and reflection from bibliographic or documentary analysis.

This work constitutes a study of the story El oidor by Efraím Castillo, in which, through critical analysis and bibliographic review, it is intended to establish the close relationship between the literary character that stars in it (el oidor) and the historical character that inspired him (Joaquín Balaguer). Using historical data, as well as other literary and critical texts, the personality of the entity in the story is compared with the concrete being who lived and exercised political activity, and the author’s success in recreating typical features of the leader’s personality is underlined. The work highlights that both in social reality and in Castillo’s fiction the character stands out for one of his most characteristic features: the non-acceptance of dissent, hence intolerance constitutes one of the typical behaviors in the actions of el oidor (fictional character) and Joaquín Balaguer (real character). In the end, as result of these comparisons, it is concluded that, indeed, there is a direct, identifiable link between the textual character, el oidor, and the real person who inspires him, the political leader and writer Joaquín Balaguer.
