This work aims to ascertain whether the communication resources of the Web 2.0 used in virtual communities of patients with rare diseases successfully provide useful information and improve the health conditions of those affected by rare diseases. This observational study conducted on the websites of 80 organizations shows that these communities of social networks are indeed the preferred means of health-related communication for those affected and they provide a helpful mutual support network. The collective knowledge generated fosters co-participation in decision-making and provides a more focused approach to care for patient needs.

This article proposes the revision of the evolution of the Mexican historical telenovela, thought as a mode of cultural memory, through the description of the melodramatic genre as a narrative matrix. This description leads us to think about the constitution of a mode of remembrance that has been articulated in two basic models and that remediates facts and characters of nationalist historiography, which made it a cultural support to the official discourse on the national past.

The paper discusses national and global interactions from Orphans of a Nation (Órfãos da Terra, Globo, 2019), a Brazilian telenovela that approaches the refugee drama and proposes a new logic in the offering of long-form TV fictions on Video on Demand systems. It is argued that telenovela’s format seeks to keep the centrality in the Brazilian audiovisual scene by investing on fusing melodramatic narratives with contemporary technologies and imaginaries shared around the globe. Reflecting this dialogical relationship, the Brazil of Orphans of a Nation embodies the refuge – where the national identity is supported by cultural diversity.

This article aims to study how melodrama, constitutive of the Latin American telenovela, incorporates the new sense conformations of contemporary society. The text proposes a reconstruction of the network of genres that constitutes the telenovela to find some explanatory keys, while analyzing the gender identity of some illustrative characters. It is concluded that the melodramatic matrix places in a manageable universe the irruption of the new, integrates it in the conformation of common sense and continues with its prescriptive and moralizing function, contributing to the configuration of a new hegemony.

This article examines the narrative strategies that have structured the biographical series of Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, and José José transmitted by television channels and streaming platforms with international influence. It focuses primarily on their retrospective stories and struggles to achieve “success”. We discussed how these storylines are reconfigured as melodramas to manage tensions about gender, sexuality, drug addiction and family.

By using algorithms to track the data of their users in Mexico, Netflix has managed to solve the equation of cultural proximity. Since 2015 it has produced original series that include melodramatic traits, even if they align with genres like comedy, biopic and political thriller. Applying industrial and textual analysis, this article argues that Netflix has established a love-hate relationship with Mexican melodrama, making fun of its conventions but using them nevertheless. It concludes that algorithms have the potential to transform Internet tv providers into competitors for local producers.

This article exposes labor characteristics of Colombian journalists, their satisfaction level with their work conditions, and socio-demographic variables associated. Through 300 surveys and 40 in-depth interviews, results show a worsening of salary conditions in the last ten years, although an improvement in hiring modalities. Journalists’ global job satisfaction perception is moderate and there are extrinsic/intrinsic factors associated such as lack of training programs and promotion opportunities.

This article displays a series of reflections on recent theoretical developments in the field of communication and cultural studies about melodrama and its transmedial nuances. Taking Jesus Martín-Barbero’s reading of melodrama as a dense cultural matrix for Latin American modernity that structures discourses, genres and formats, the article argues that such framework remains pertinent and useful in the light of emergent socio technological configurations in the field of production, circulation and consumption of transmedial content.

This article reviews the present of melodrama as a narrative form that modulates the dramatic development of contemporary serials, indicating it as the determining aestheticcreative impulse in assessing the emotional effectiveness it achieves in the audience. Structurally, this impression would be expressed from three particular modulations: moral readability, audiovisual mannerism and the particular approach that makes binary tensions typical of the genre, such as the masculine and the feminine, good and evil, defect and virtue.

This article discusses the theoretical borders that separate adaptations of literary texts (by professional writers) and the activities of fans, especially fanfictions of The Phantom of the Opera. The theoretical approach brings the notion of “transcreation” and authors from the field of fan studies. The results include the recognition of fanfictions as a type of literary adaptation, and the notion of The Phantom of the Opera as an archive or as “archontic literature”.
