Resumen
This article examines representations of Islam and Muslims by analyzing The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal headlines two months before and after the Charlie Hebdo attack to better understand manifestations of Islamophobia in the American national media after a major terrorist event. Results found a majority of headlines related Islam and Muslims to violent conflict, war and terrorism (73% in The Wall Street Journal and 63% in The New York Times). This correlation spiked directly after the attack. Headlines prior also mostly referenced Islam and Muslims when reporting on violent conflict, indicating covert Islamophobia.

Resumen
This article aims to study how the ownership structure of the media system and the role of the State are linked to the deterioration of journalistic work and the exercise of freedom of speech. From the Political Economy of Journalism and the discussions on the right to information, a comparative study is proposed to contrast the situation in Brazil, Argentina and Chile between 2016 and 2018. It is concluded that the high concentration in the three media systems, along with the retraction of the State as regulator and content producer, deepen a crisis that threatens journalistic activity.

Resumen
This article argues for an examination of the Mexican Media System (MMS) in the political context of democratic alternation, convergence and the regulatory framework established by the 2014 Telecommunication and Broadcasting Act. Specifically, this research focuses on the degree and nature of state intervention in the media system by analyzing the most important public communication policies from 2013 to 2018. The article concludes, that this new normative framework and its application disrupted some of old and novel forms of collusion between the political and the media systems. However, the article provides evidence to suggest that the central characteristics of the MMS is the maintenance of political clienteles.

Resumen
Facing the concern of increasing incivility in political campaigns, we present a content analysis of negative advertising broadcast in four Mexican presidential elections, to explain the factors that shape their treats and likelihood of emission (2000 to 2018, N=108). Three factors are significant: competitiveness of the elections raises the likelihood of attacks; strict regulation makes them subtler, and party ideology determines the tactics followed.

Resumen
Research into which factors in the media coverage are associated with the issue frame and which with the strategic game frame can help with understanding the causes of the proliferation of both styles of reporting. In this article, radio and television coverage of local electoral campaigns in the Mexican context were analyzed. Our findings show a greater presence of the issue frame in comparison with the strategic game frame, and confirm that the ownership and sector of the media organization, the type of election, the candidate’s gender, along with temporal-contextual variables predict the use of both news frames significantly.

Resumen
This paper combines a content analysis of 3 831 articles in the German press with eight qualitative interviews with correspondents in the region to assess aspects of ethnocentrism in the news. We considered events from 2000 to 2014 in the following publications: the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Tageszeitung, and Der Spiegel. One-quarter of the analysed events shows a German self-reference, although this involvement is sectorial. Apolitical areas of coverage tend to show a higher level of ethnocentrism. Besides, news items signed by correspondents are less ethnocentric.
