This article discusses the readings of three different audiences who watched Chilean TV fiction series produced in the context of 40 years of the coup e tat. Thanks to the analysis of 24 interviews and 6 focus groups conducted on men and women from three different generations — who experienced the coup d'état; who grew up in dictatorship; and who grew up in democracy-, we answer this research question: What memories of political violence do participants of these three generations make in their reception process of TV series about the Chilean recent past? The results indicate that the lived experience in relation to the dictatorship has a different impact on their readings about the political violence represented in each historical period of time. It is noticeable an increase in the number of fanpages creating their own identity based upon Brazilian telenovelas’ characters. Even more, most of them posts image macro format. Such image macro format is a pattern widely associated to the phenomenon of memes on Internet. This article argues that content producers strategically operate and display the language of memes to encourage their followers commitment. To understand such process, we map and analyze the content of the five-page publications, trying to identify whether there is a strategy explicitly involved and whether the contents are linker to the telenovela’s plot. The study found out that pages frequently change their structure and generally deploy a type of humor targeting people’s daily lives. This practice points to the different ways in which the telenovela, a television product widely consumed in Latin America, is appropriated and used in the making of content circulated online.

The article analyzes speeches of the Ecuadorian president, Lenín Moreno, regarding the process of building up the concepts of the prodestinatarios and the contradestinatarios: that is, a binary representation of “Us” and “Others”, implying positive and negative depictions. The study explores the president's discursive strategy in the Ecuadorian political realm during 2018. That year, Moreno adopted a political frame of consensus to articulate his administration with powerful groups. And, in doing so, his former political partner and ex-president Rafael Correa, became Moreno’s new opponent. Political attacks, then, targeted Correa relying upon and rewriting what was such administration. There is, also, an erasing allowing to put together an “Us” in Correa’s "Citizenship Revolution" turned into Moreno’s "Government of everybody".

This paper intends to discuss the instrumentalisation of nostalgias in contemporary audiovisual products, with a focus on Brazilian television series. For this purpose, we propose a content analysis of the first season of Samantha! (Netflix, 2018-2019), with the support of television and nostalgias studies. As a result, we consider that Samantha! addresses two perspectives on nostalgic gestures: one romanticized and the other critical, thus demonstrating the possibilities of working with nostalgic gestures on contemporary media production.

This article examines the recent participation of Argentinian television series in international film festivals in an audiovisual context dominated by radical changes in production, distribution and consumption. The proposal of this work is to describe the multiple identity of contemporary audiovisual and postulate that the incursion of recognized artists in the television format - and its exhibition at film festivals - works as a legitimate double operation, elevating the series as a cultural product and artistic expression. From this perspective, the narrative and stylistic construction of two Argentine fictions will be analyzed, as well as the journeys undertaken by them - their television broadcast, online platforms and audiovisual festivals. The conclusions of the article aim to highlight the central place occupied by the circulation and distribution of television fiction in the audiovisual industry and in the recognition spaces usually associated with film and television.

Smartphones play a pivotal role in the everyday life of an important part of the global population, reaching over 95 percent smartphone consumers in the United States. Digital industry depicts this technology as emblem of social progress and plenitude, while the environmental and social impact of its massive success is eluded in public and academic discourse. Richard Maxwell and Toby Miller reflect, from the framework of Media Studies, on the material and social impact of this technology, because they are convinced that little changes in the way we shape our digital life can contribute to a sustainable communication framework.

In October 2019, a series of protests took place throughout Chile. The aim of this paper is to describe the metaphors emitted by the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, in his speeches made between October 18 and 25, in the context of Chile's “Social Outbreak”. The metaphors were identified and analyzed from the approach of the dynamics of discourse applied to the metaphor. Metaphors related to: Social Agenda, States of Emergency, Manifestations and Needs of the Population were identified. It is observed that the President during the first week of the social outbreak sees the protests as obstacles in the “pathway” of the country's development; here the “war against a powerful enemy” stands out as the great obstacle to be defeated and where he must guide the population towards development through the Social Agenda, protecting what is “built” throughout Chilean history.

This article addresses the visual ways in which gender violence is represented through the semi-pragmatic analysis of the photo essay by the photojournalist, Gastón Iñiguez titled, Siete Vidas. Sobreviviendo a la violencia machista (2018), which portrays the multiple facets and consequences of gender violence through the story of seven women. Methodologically, the images were analyzed regarding the visual representations shaping the images, the decoding-coding clues, the relationship between the linguistic and the visual code and an analysis of both formal and compositional dimensions of the images. The analysis also included an in-depth interview with the author. One of the main results highlights that the visual representations that make up the essay function as metaphors of the known cycle of gender violence and, building up from that, allow us to critically address the issue they represent.

This article analyzes the perceptions of communicators of digital media according to their discourses on the situation of media pluralism in Chile. The opinions of the communicators were collected through 19 interviews that reveal the subjective conditions of different digital media in the country. The obtained results indicate that journalists understand media pluralism as a media diversity. Also, they consider their own media as pluralistic internally, even when it is perceived that the pluralism of the media system as a whole is limited by the commercialization of the media and the power of money over editorial lines.
