I propose to analyze the role and impact of the ethnic social movement in the recent political transformations of Mexico. I will refer to political actions carried out by the ethnic movement and its transcendence in contemporary Mexican political reforms and electoral democracy.Key moments in which political reforms were registered are emphasized, as well as the gestation processes and consolidation of the ethnic movement and stages in which the progress or setbacks of electoral democracy can be seen. A reflection and analysis is proposed seeking the possible links and interrelations of the thematic set that gives title to this article, and that little attention has been given to this in the sociopolitical studies in Mexico: Democracy, ethnic movement and political reforms which is the previous thing before a new process of re-construction of the State in Mexico, denominated Fourth Transformation.

The way hunger is understood and addressed as a convoluted problem varies greatly in different contexts and spatial-temporal scales. The ways public policy has attempted to solve this problem have been ineffective, as there are many social and natural implications that come together. To propose a solution at the root of such a complex, transcendental, and convoluted problem, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the historical development and the particular characteristics of each context and scale. Having said that, this article proposes a historical review of the food-supply problem in the Yucatan Peninsula: the main elements of the natural environment that provoke it, and how the social environment has implemented different strategies to resolve it, according to the dominant food capacities and interests.

Although tourism is currently one of the fastest growing activities worldwide, its regional distribution has not been homogenous, being accelerated in dependent economies, reproducing a subordinate condition as an activity that depends on the foreign market. It should also be taken into account that this activity is led by foreign capital making possible a set of seasonal, eventual and intensive work carried out by an unskilled labor force. In addition, since production and consumption take place in the same territory, a festival becomes one of the favored spaces for tourism in Mexico. This situation affects the conditions of life of the workforce attracted to the Yucatán peninsula in search of employment.

Insects were part of the studies of enlightenment science during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Taking into consideration the environemnt of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, and from the point of view of the cultural history of animals, some aspects of the contents and of the immaterial meanings on the tropical entomofauna will be analyzed in this paper that —beyond the scientific reports— served the enlightenment elites to articulate a discourse of social, cultural, and political intervention for areas not yet controlled and exploited by the colonial system. These “poisonous vermin” were the obvious sign that they had to conquer the natural environment of the warm regions, profit from the botanical and zoological treasures that were hidden there and, of course, to culturally homogenize the equally “wild” human groups, so that those who perceived themselves as the spokesmen of “progress” and “civilization” could settle there.

The indigenous-Catholic devotion space of Chuiná is one of the most visited shrines in the Yucatan Peninsula, as well as receiving pilgrimages from Mayan communities and also from different states in Mexico. Although the image of apparitional tradition is the main reason for the movement of devotees, the characteristics of the space that are concentrated in the place —a hill, a cave and a lagoon— have played a fundamental role in its symbolic construction. Likewise, the historical and social processes involving the area of “the mountains” with the Mayan communities of the north of Yucatan Peninsula make this space have meanings that go beyond the purely religious to be understood as an appropriation of outside community territory. From the Mayan narrative a cultural context is offered, which legitimizes Chuiná as a place of Mayaidentity, by bringing together territorial, economic, cosmogonic, and emotional elements.

This paper aims to show DonnaHaraway’s critical thinking, one of the most suggestive authors of contemporary social theory. Aspects of her work are taken as distinctive of her way of articulating a deep and wide reflection of the world we inhabit. This is located in a limited moment, generally called Anthropocene, which for some authors is unsurpassed. For Haraway, the damage to the planet is irreversible in certain ways and, therefore, there can only be partial healing. She proposes a different way of looking at life, to enhance new forms of relationships that she calls multispecies, to indicate that this is rather more than a human affair. Her critical work is aimed at modifying current landscapes, for which she takes advantage of complexity, feminism, and political perspectives in the philosophy of science.

This paper describes the critical situation that upper-level students present in relation to reading comprehension skills of academic texts in theEnglish language. The aim was to identify the effects of the application of metacognitive strategies in reading comprehension as a teaching model proposal. After the completion of the treatment, a post-test was applied to the control and the experimental groups, and the results showed a significant positive difference from the results obtained in the pre-test by the experimental group. The statistical tests showed that the metacognitive strategies improved significantly the reading skills in the students who applied them compared to those who did not; therefore, the research hypothesis was accepted.
