Resumen
The article analyses the relationship between the MAS-IPSP’s party organization, the main Bolivian social movements, the economic model and the State-society relations during the masista-era. The research relies on over thirty interviews to social and political actors, and on secondary literature. The research recuperates classic analytical tools to explore the different levels of influence reached by the main social organizations surrounding (or composing) the MAS-IPSP and to highlight the role of two relevant conflictual dimensions within the former masista-coalition (salaried versus self-employed workers, indigenism versus developmentalism, among others) which in the middle term jeopardised the hegemony of the MAS-IPSP in Bolivia.

Resumen
The essay examines the relation between trauma and its (attempted) linguistic representation mediated through translation in five novels published between 1990 and 2007. In Lenta biografía, by Sergio Chejfec, Insensatez, by Horacio Castellanos Moya, and Yo nunca te prometí la eternidad, by Tununa Mercado, the narrating voice puts into words and translates a traumatic experience lived by another person. In Manèges, by Laura Alcoba, and Mar paraguayo, by Wilson Bueno, the female narrators appear as traumatized subjects who approach their traumatic experience by adopting another language (Manèges), and by the invention of a migratory, contaminated speech (Mar paraguayo). After introducing the topic discussed, the essay focuses on the relation between trauma and narration as well as between translation and narration in each novel, and finally reflects on the attempt to represent trauma through language linked to the act of translation.

In Le bleu des abeilles (2013), Laura Alcoba evokes her exile in the suburbs of Paris in 1979 and the following correspondence with her father who remained imprisoned in Argentina. Soon the act of translating becomes indispensable in order to maintain an affective relationship with him, as they communicate in Spanish about books she reads in French. Thus, translation opens a shared mental space between Argentina and France. This article sheds light on how the conscious acquisition of French, at the cost of Spanish, initiates the elaboration of (unconscious) trauma which Cathy Caruth, based upon Freud, defines as the external which became interiorized without any mediation. Nevertheless, Alcoba’s trauma never dissolves completely and the author ends up having an ambiguous attitude towards both languages.

Resumen
Taking examples from Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, the following section analyzes the challenges, potentialities and ambivalences that the concept of ethnicity as a social category unfolds in practice. The examples show that although ethnicity is a modern colonial category that homogenizes and racializes non-“western” populations, it can also be used strategically (or be rejected) by ethnicized actors themselves, to mobilize, strengthen and articulate their own political projects.

Resumen
Functional diversity in Argentine cinema often functions as a symbolic instrument to affirm normality of majority society. However alterity of functional diversity can also serve as a touchstone to unmask a society in disintegration and affirm this way the wisdom of the marginalized. Two Argentine movies of the 21th century show the potential and the limits of the symbolism of functional diversity in a social parable: the commercially successful El hijo de la novia (2001; director: Juan José Campanella) and Anita (2009; director: Marcos Carnevale).

Resumen
This introduction presents the articles included in the dossier. Using specific methodological paradigms (Psychoanalysis, Trauma Studies, Digital Humanities, Translation Studies), each article addresses the complex and little studied connection between trauma and translation as it appears in a corpus of contemporary narrative texts by writers of Latin American origin.The introduction also contextualises the topic. It provides a review of various conceptualisations of the notion of “trauma” in different fields of knowledge, relating these to the link between trauma and translation in the narratives under analysis.

This article describes and analyzes the performance of the main agents of Argentine university policy during the period 1983-1990, focusing on the role of the rectors and the National Interuniversity Council (CIN). It addresses the problem of university coordination in the period following the last military dictatorship (1976-1983), trying to understand its general operating conditions, the role of a nascent “rector power” and the changes that led to the consolidation of a form of university autonomy that we have called “fragmented”. Based on the analysis of unpublished sources, we reconstruct the work agenda of the rectors and the CIN in a scarcely studied period of the history of Argentine university coordination.

This article examines Daniel Alarcón’s 2013 novel At Night We Walk in Circles and analyzes how artists engage with political crisis and its continued traumatic effects long after the crisis (in this particular case: the internal conflict in Peru) has ended. Taking Marianne Hirsch’s concept of “postmemory” as a point of departure, the study focuses on the relationship between past trauma and its legacy in the present, arguing, that such negotiations between past and present may be understood through the lens of translation. Here, translation is seen as pointing to the ways in which art created in response to one context is continually reimagined and recreated –that is, translated– in order to circulate in new contexts. Alarcón’s novel particularly positions theater as a translative force, one that elucidates the relationship between trauma, postmemory, and mourning.

Richard Rodriguez’s Hunger of Memory (1982) is often seen as a story of professional success and assimilation into American life, but the author was criticized for opposing so-called “affirmative action” and bilingual education, highly controversial issues defended by Chicano activists in the eighties. Conversely, 21st-century readers began to read this work in a more nuanced way. Rodriguez was born in California into a Mexican immigrant family, and at age six, his parents decided to switch to English at home. The loss of Spanish caused feelings of anguish and guilt. The silence in the family reveals the paradox that speaking about trauma is perceived as impossible, while language is exactly the tool to heal the traumatized. The aim of this article is to analyze the complex relationship between trauma and translation in three central themes: family, religion and race.
