Thoughts about the professionals in the Mexican publishing field and some of their problems, such as the publisher’s multiple functions, the new players in the process, the precarious work conditions, the current crisis and its possible projections into the future. The diversity in the forms of production and the consumption of texts are going through significant changes, due to the new digital formats, the fluidity and fragmentation of contents and the new ways in which the perception of reality is built in social networks. Nevertheless, the imaginary of the publishing professionals cherishes so many idealizations that this prevents them from becoming aware of their own contradictions and they are having a difficult time in consciously addressing new opportunities; therefore, many publishers rather see these changes as threats that must be resisted.

Based on analysis of documents and auction catalogues, this paper shows an overview of the Mexican bibliographic exodus from 1868 to 1896, focused on the sale of Doctor Nicolás León's books to the Brown family. The John Carter Brown Library is one of the most important collections of books from and about the Americas. It is currently the first repository to keep the largest collection of Mexican prints of the 16th century. However, so far there is no story about how this collection was acquired.

The goal of this article is to present elements to show the coexistence of concepts such as book collection and library during the 18th Century in New Spain, and to analyze the diference between them through archive records, dictionaries, the Juan José de Eguiara y Eguren’s Bibliotheca mexicana and colonial portrait paintings in Mexico. The conclusion is that the conceptual difference lies in the use of book collections by Spanish colonial owners.

En 1973 se inauguró la colección Instrumenta Bibliographica, publicada por el Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas de la UNAM: el primer volumen fue el exitoso Manual de metodología y técnica bibliográficas de la profesora Gloria Escamilla González, que tuvo un par de ediciones aumentadas y reimpresiones; en segundo lugar apareció el Índice de nombres latinos de ciudades con imprenta 1448-1825, preparado por uno de los bibliógrafos más reconocidos en México durante el siglo XX, José Ignacio Mantecón Navasal. Este artículo subraya la relevancia, originalidad, vigencia y utilidad de esta obra pionera, poniéndola en contexto con la producción intelectual de Mantecón en México desde la década de 1940 y reflexionando sobre su beneficio y acerca de una posible modernización, corrección y edición digital de la misma.

More than 200 years after his birth, various facets of Ignacio Ramírez life are studied and analyzed. Ramírez was a well-known character in 19th century’s political history. As a Mexican writer, poet, journalist, lawyer, teacher, politician and liberal ideologue, he portrays the model of the intellectual that sprang to public life based on a robust cultural framework of books and libraries, and a strong dedication to critical reading. In this context, it is inferred that the book collections in the libraries at his disposal had a notable effect on the various stages of his academic endeavors. In other words, they shaped his work as scholar, reader and author, writer and speaker, teacher and journalist, foreseer and legal adviser, as a civil servant and reformer. Additionally, the influence of his political work in the creation of important libraries during the Reform movement and the Restored Republic period is explored.

Estudio de un raro impreso con una lista de falsos títulos presentados como obras de José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, publicado en 1822 como prospecto editorial. Se hace un análisis comparativo del catálogo de los títulos inventados de Fernández de Lizardi con los de obras impresas en México y España a inicios del siglo XIX. La comparativa revela la escritura de los falsos títulos como ejercicio deliberado de imitación de los ya publicados sobre temáticas religiosas y políticas. Los títulos presentes en la lista conectaban con el horizonte de expectativas del lector. En conclusión, los títulos inventados apuntan hacia una orientación política de corte liberal y una crítica a los textos de los escritores contrarios al ideario del Pensador Mexicano, especialmente en el contexto de su excomunión en 1822 y la política de restricción de la libertad de prensa.  

This brief text aims to highlight the changes in the reading process that are acquired from the use of digital contents. It includes an analytical description of some Mexican digital repositories, which have demonstrated their importance in a time of limited mobility due to social distancing.
