Traditional medicine is the result of the accumulation of ancient and traditional knowledge in the application of plants for the elaboration of home remedies. In Panama, traditional medicine requires the support of technologies that allow the production of raw materials in a safe, controlled and efficient manner. The PFAL system is a type of agriculture in a controlled environment that allows the cultivation of plants for study, protection and mass production, under optimized environmental conditions. This type of technology gives rise to sustainable processes for the production of food and medicinal herbs, representing a feasible solution for the environmental problems that affect conventional agriculture. This work details the potential utilities that PFAL technology has for the study, preservation and use of Panamanian flora, evidenced in technological developments carried out in other countries of the first world.

In order to find an efficient alternative for the implementation of a food safety management system (SGIA) that is related to the small and medium-sized food companies (SMEs) of our country, a case study and a survey of 100 food SMEs in Panama. A methodological model is proposed using three basic pillars: minimum concepts of human resource management, a project engineering tool and good hygienic practices (BPH) as part of all SGIA. The development of the first pillar is presented, in which the concept of safety culture is pointed out as a key component of the strategic plans for implementing management systems. As part of the model, the main challenges facing the staff were evaluated and the minimum requirements that a Human Resources Department must have were identified, which, once adequate, allow companies to achieve success in terms of quality and safety.

Series compensated transmission lines bring technical and economic advantages for power systems. However, when transient events occur, the performance of distance protection is affected, which can cause undesired tripping in the protection. This study compared the Fourier transform algorithm with a variant of the Prony method, which allows attenuating sub-harmonic frequencies that are generated at the time of an electrical failure in series compensated transmission lines. It was observed how the estimation of the fault impedance was improved when single-phase faults were applied, allowing the distance protection to improve its selectivity at the moment of making the tripping decision. This study assessed a 400 kV system developed with the alternative transient program was, and the signal processing was assessed using the Python and Matlab programming language.

Matthew C. Larsen is the Director of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, headquartered in Panama City, Panama. The Institute furthers the understanding of tropical nature and its importance to human welfare, trains students to conduct research in the tropics, and promotes conservation by increasing public awareness of the beauty and importance of tropical ecosystems. In addition to its resident scientists, the Institute’s facilities are used annually by some 1,300 visiting scientists, pre- and postdoctoral fellows and interns from academic and research institutions who come from a quarter of all nations on Earth. From 2010 to 2014, Dr. Larsen was the U.S. Geological Survey Associate Director for Climate and Land Use Change, where he led science programs focused on climate change, land use change, and a national ecological carbon sequestration assessment. Additionally, Dr. Larsen managed the Landsat satellite program and the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center. From 2005 to 2014, Dr. Larsen led U.S. Geological Survey Water Resources programs and served as Chair of the US National Committee for UNESCO International Hydrological Programme. Larsen’s 90+ publications are in the fields of natural hazards, water resources, climate change, ecosystem services, and marine geology. Dr. Larsen earned a B.S. in Geology from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, and a PhD in Geography at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Finlay discovered and described the importance of the biological vector through the metaxemic theory of the transmission of diseases by biological agents, applying it to the yellow fever transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito being the first to theorize on the transmission of diseases through mosquitoes. As a consequence of the discovery of Dr. Carlos Finlay, another renowned doctor, William Gorgas, implemented in Panama the principles indicated by Finlay for the sanitary bases. It was a measure of protection of the public health of Panama Canal workers, which allowed the success of the construction of the Panama Canal, a great work of engineering of the 20th century, before of this great discovery of Finlay, the yellow fever and malaria had killed the people who worked in its construction.

An essential part of the energy consumption of buildings is related to the occupant’s behavior. Which means that it is necessary to know more precisely how the user behaves and moves within the environments, and this is one of the challenges that require knowing the technology for occupancy monitoring in buildings. This article presents a summary of the technologies currently used for the control of building occupancy with the aim of investigating where potential future research can be directed, considering the current development.

Hypatia of Alexandria is considered the first female scientist and mathematician in history. Endowed with great beauty, she also dedicated herself to an exhaustive care of her body, through a daily physical routine that allowed her to maintain a healthy body, as well as an active mind. Her unique character as a woman devoted to thought and teaching earned her general appreciation. He educated a select school of aristocrats who held high positions. Despite his remarkable physical and intellectual qualities, he refused to marry, in order to give himself entirely to science.

Professor Sanahuja is a professor of international relations and a specialist in development cooperation, a field in which he has a good number of publications and reference studies. In addition, he has specialized in relations between the European Union and Latin America, from a pro-European perspective, and has published various works on Spanish foreign and cooperation policy. As a Latin Americanist, he has also studied foreign policy, regionalism and Latin American integration, conducting critical studies on "open regionalism", and has raised the need for a "new regionalism" and a "post-liberal regionalism" with stronger institutions .

The research was made at the Universidad Nacional Agraria la Molina of Perú, with students who took General Statistic course in the 2019-1 semester. The purpose of the research was to identify the learning styles and to verify if there are significant differences in the academic performance existed according to predominant learning style, the work had a descriptive correlational scope, the Neurolinguistic Programming Model by Grinder and Bandler (1979) was taken as reference, where the instrument was the Learning Style Test PNL or VAK Model of 40 items, while to measure the academic performance the notes of the students were requested to the study unit. Verifying that generally the proportions of 40%, 30% and 30% are expected for the visual, auditory and kinesthetic perceptions respectively, it was also verified by means of the Kruskal-Wallis test, that the academic performance in the general statistics course does not differ according to the predominant learning style of the student (p.=0.498), we concluded affirming that discovering the predominant learning style allows us to know the type of student we have in the classroom, which gives us a diagnosis of the strengths and weaknesses of the students. In addition, teaching strategies can be incorporated in our class to match the teaching of specific tasks, which will be useful and beneficial to the students, consequently, it will improve the academic performance of the students.
