Th is study aims to create an offi cial register about fossil collections of the Didactic Paleontological Museum of Ocucaje. The paleontological collections present 45% of vertebrate fossils where there are cetacean vertebrae, two shark teeth, part of a seal skeleton, shark vertebrae, and an archaeocete skull. 20% is represented by fossil invertebrates such as a large number of internal molds of veneroids (clams), conglomerates of Turritela woodsi Lisson, 1925, gasteropods (Naticidae), and Mesodesmatidae (Macha). In total, 157 fossils have been coded and described, the fragments that represent 35% of the collection have not been included. Th e Pisco Formation has been considered as “fossil lagerstäten” for this reason it is strictly necessary the existence of a site museum that can house this paleontological diversity and maintain a constant curatorial activity.

Acid mine drainage is a powerful source of contamination of surface and groundwater. For the treatment of acid mine drainage, there are active and passive methods, the latter include artifi cial wetlands, which are being used in industrialized countries, obtaining interesting results. It is important to know the characteristics, types, physical, chemical, and biological processes; choice, design, and construction of artifi cial wetlands; as well as its advantages and disadvantages for its application in the treatment of acid mine drainage. Th erefore, 119 publications were reviewed, organized by common themes. Artifi cial wetlands show to be a good alternative in the treatment of acid mine drainage; However, factors such as size, design, choice plant-bacteria, and weather conditions for its application must be considered. Th e anaerobic wetland is more effi cient in the reduction of acidity and heavy metals, also the wetland of subsurface fl ow shows to be more suitable for the treatment of the DAM.

Polyphenols are compounds of secondary metabolism in plants and their action is recognized in the control against free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Th e study aimed to indicate polyphenols and their intake in fruits and vegetables as a protective action for human health due to stress against Covid-19. Given the rapid spread of the emerging pandemic Covid-19, it continues to be of great concern due to the mortality that occurs globally and there is no doubt about the level of stress in the population. Attempts to fl atten the epidemiological curve are diverse in that Covid-19 could not only aff ect psycho-mentally, but some non-communicable diseases may perhaps debut. Considering the serious situation, from the axiological point of view, a question arises: can the daily consumption of fruits and vegetables in the diet patterns generate, from the metabolic point of view, any potentiating impact on immunology against COVID-19?

The emergency of antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella is a major concern worldwide, and recent studies highlight the relationship among antimicrobial consumption by animals and the diverse resistance mechanisms developed by microorganisms. Th is study was undertaken to investigate the circulation of Salmonella spp. associated with infectious processes in domestic animals as well as the patterns of susceptibility to antimicrobials. Sampling and Salmonella spp. isolation were carried out in the Department of General Bacteriology at the Provincial Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory of Villa Clara province, Cuba, during 2016. The antimicrobial susceptibility was tested by the Kirby-Bauer method. Results were analyzed by the statistical package Statgraphics Centurion version XV-II/2006 applying descriptive procedures, and multiple comparisons of proportions, for the evaluation of the percentages of resistance of Salmonella by animal species and by serogroup. Th ere were identifi ed 46 Salmonella spp. isolates belonging to serogroups B, C1, C2 and D in 15% of samples, all coming from hens, bovines, sheep and pigs. In general, the antimicrobial resistance profi les were expressed for ampicillin (46% of isolates), sulphonamide compounds (28%), nalidixic acid (26%) and tetracycline (22%); resistance to ciprofl oxacin, gentamicin and cefotaxime were not detected. Th e most resistant Salmonella spp. isolates were from serogroups B and D, as well as those coming from sheep and pigs.

Dichotomous keys are resources or tools that researchers, teachers or other personnel linked to the study of biological sciences use for the determination of diff erent species of organisms, by comparing two exclusive characters. The investigation proposes diff erent dichotomous keys, illustrated in electronic format, for the identifi cation of diff erent aquatic and terrestrial vertebrate taxa present in Cuban fauna that includes orders, families, genera and species, and that are in correspondence with the Zoology Program’s General II (Zoology of the chordates), which is taught in the Degree in Biology Education at the Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas, in the Republic of Cuba. Various theoretical and empirical methods were used in the investigation in their dialectical interrelation which allowed identifying the existing defi ciencies and proposing the solution. Th e information for the diagnosis was obtained from the application of diff erent instruments, such as document review, participant observation, pedagogical test, case study, student survey and expert evaluation. In order to mitigate the diffi culties detected, and with a view to introducing for the fi rst time the illustrated dichotomous keys for vertebrates in electronic format in the Bachelor’s degree in Biology Education, they were developed and subjected to expert criteria that assessed them as relevant.

This article on ontological perspectives on forests seeks to contribute to the development of a forest ontology that will make it possible to examine and strengthen the theoretical, political, institutional, legal, educational and technical framework of the forest sciences and to review the relationship with forests, which to date is strongly anthropocentric. It is concluded that the confl uence of positivist science, hegemonic economy and politics, reinforced by forestry education and communication, is leading to the institutionalized hegemonic approach of the ontology of the forest and the human being. Even sustainable development is not an accurate proposal as long as it maintains the essence of its economic orientation and its instrumental relationship with nature and forests. In this separation, forests are reduced to providers of renewable natural resources, natural capital or goods and services oriented towards economic growth. Although there are interesting advances in relation to sustainable forest management proposals, it can still be conceived as a process and not a goal. Although it is still possible to fi nd manifestations of a relational ontology in indigenous peoples, there is worrying evidence of its replacement by a disjunctive ontology. Th e knowledge of forest ontology invites to review the relationship with forests and the need to incorporate a socio-ecosystemic vision of forests and a close interrelation with forest ethics in a biocentric perspective.

The search for the sustainability of human settlements, mainly urban areas, and of ecosystems as a whole, involves the adoption of integrating territorial strategies that take into account environmental, economic, social, and cultural aspects. The focus on ecosystem services can be an ally in strengthening the integrated vision of metropolitan territory and water as a key integrating element. In this context, this study aimed to propose a set of indicators for the assessment of natural capital and the supply and demand of the ecosystem water supply service for metropolitan regions, with the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (MRC), Paraná, as the main focus. The set of indicators was selected from a theoretical basis based on literature review and subsequently validated by specialists using the Delphi method, with  electronic questionnaires sent in two rounds of validation. The validated indicators were later used to analyze the water supply in the MRC. Although the urban area concentrates the greatest demands for water resources, the surrounding municipalities are the largest real or potential providers of ecosystem services. Some municipalities, especially those located at the northern end of the MRC, stand out for their significant water availability. However, the analysis shows a trend of degradation of natural capital and consequent impairment of water supply in MCR. There is a need to broaden, in a large part of the region, the implementation of biodiversity protection policies, encourage the creation of new conservation units and strengthen the monitoring of land use and the search for innovative solutions to improve water management in the metropolis.
