Currently, the Ecuadorian population has lived under an unprecedented polarization of media, which, in effect, is characterized by a marked class struggle inherited since the Colonial period in the Americas. Thus, we live in a new digital era of information and a decay of traditional media where fake news, media illiteracy, and information bias are the "bread and butter" for public opinion. Consequently, this article undresses the relation between the polarization of media and the establishment analyzing the influence of opposing political tendencies in the decade from 2007 to 2017. Furthermore, a qualitative study methodology was applied based on field expert interviews and an analysis on literature and statistics on the theme. The results revealed a clear connection between the polarization of media and the race for power, moreover it highlights a necessity of media literacy in Ecuador.

This research analyzes the journalistic exercise of political cartoons, focusing the study on the province of El Oro. The qualitative methodology applied the interview technique to cartoonists and journalists. As a result, the criterion that Orense cartoonists exercise an empirical profession stands out and, even without prior train- ing, they consider that political caricature should be allowed as long as it respects the honor of others, in order to avoid an absurd and abusive humor.

This research analyzed the coverage of the Marches for Sexual and Gender Diversity, formerly known as Gay Pride Marches, in Bogotá, based on ten representative media from this city, some of them national in scope. The objective was to determine how the marches were recorded by journalists, both in the general mass media and in those specialized in LGBTI issues, understanding that media are catalysts for stereotypes and prejudices in society. Thus, articles between 1982 and 2018 were analyzed (in 2019 the march was suspended due to a storm and in 2020 due to COVID-19), in order to identify modes, trends and changes in the way of reporting. The method for this research was mainly content analysis, although discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis were also implemented. The approach was quantitative and descriptive in scope. As relevant conclusions, characteristics in journalistic coverage were identified, especially in traditional media, such as misinformation, incomplete information, an elitist approach, limited coverage and approach, which implies an invisibility and depoliticization of a march that is represented as a mere show. On the other hand, a more in-depth coverage is observed in the medium specialized in LGBTI issues. This research was carried out with resources provided by Universidad Santo Tomás in Colombia.

The expansion of Ecuadorian online media had the support of international cooperation, interested in strengthening the democratic system and freedom of speech. Internacional NGOs, with the support of those in Ecuador, invested in training and seed capital. This process started when the relationship between the Rafael Correa government (2007-2017) and the media became strained and journalists migrated to the web to continue their work. Plan V and Periodismo de Investigación are two of the projects that received development funding. This form of financing is a variant of the sponsored business model. This research, which is descriptive in nature, seeks to determine how international cooperation aid to online media is established, for which in-depth interviews were conducted with the spokesperson of local and international NGOs, such as Fundamedios and Foro de Periodismo del Ecuador; an international one, such as Freedom House; and representatives of Plan V and Periodismo de Investigación online media. This work is part of an investigation financed by Univerisidad Andina Simón Bolívar, Ecuador.

The arrival of coronavirus in Ecuador posed challenges in various areas, such as the media. This work presents a quantitative content analysis that measures the presence or absence of journalistic quality criteria for the coverage of COVID-19 in the country. This research analyzes the news published by four digital native media during the period from March to May 2020, the first quarter of the health emergency. Different variables addressed by a study inspired by the Journalistic Value Added Method (VAP) were identified. This instrument allows us to compare journalistic work during catastrophes with the traditional patterns of journalism and, from this, to analyze the deficiencies and difficulties in this type of coverage.

COVID-19 has not only caused the largest global crisis of our time, it has also caused a "massive infodemic", which is the way the World Health Organization (WHO) calls the amount of false information that spins around the pandemic. For this reason, fact-checking has become the tool of journalism that helps the general public to discern between deceptions, scams, decontextualizations and reality. To achieve this, this research was based on the verifications of the Ecuador Chequea platform but applied qualitative criteria such as type of source or the emotions produced by fake news to obtain as a result visualizations that allow understanding links between misinformation that would not be possible otherwise. . The result of this work is a series of representations that help to understand the environment in which disinformation arises and spreads and that can be replicated in other circumstances.

This research identifies the Twitter accounts of renowned Ecuadorian scientists to make an analysis of scientific discourse and published content, with the purpose of sharing scientific information on this social network. It identifies the topics addressed by each user during the period from April to June 2020, the first quarter of the health crisis in Ecuador caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a quantitative study, variables corresponding to the digital platform are taken into account, such as the use of hashtags, mentions, and audiovisual material. The content analysis classifies the publications of scientists in order to assess whether they comply with essential axes of scientific dissemination such as data verification, exposition, and argumentation.
