The university social service as a formative academic activity strengthens skills, knowledge, attitudes and aptitudes developed in professional studies. As Gadamer points out, the “formative” concept means the culture that a person possesses as a result of their formation in the contents of the tradition of their environment. It refers both to the process by which culture is acquired and to personal heritage, that is, to the totality of their learning experiences. It is a spiritual attitude that comes from the knowledge and feeling of all spiritual and ethical life and that flows harmoniously in sensitivity and character1. Thus, the experience that represents the social service will leave in the graduates greater and better skills and knowledge that will determine the professional practice; It shows that rootedness achieved by the student in which over time there will be a reconciliation with self-knowledge (which observes and feels that it is acquiring new skills) in being another (by adapting to the phenomena that they are presented to him).Social service is a time that implies positive and negative personal experiences that determine, in many cases, the professional evolution surrounded by successes, errors, doubts and also satisfactions, and if it is carried out in communities with high vulnerability in the attention of the care to the Maternal health can be more complex. Objective: to explore the experience of foreign social service interns in obstetric care. Method qualitative study, with a phenomenological approach, from the perspective of Husserl who distinguishes what we perceive and how we perceive, insists that attention is what allows us to capture the moments, characteristics and determinations of things. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews with bachelor’s degree interns in nursing and obstetrics who performed social service in states of the Mexican Republic such as Hidalgo and Tlaxcala, dedicating themselves to maternal health care. Intentional selection of participants until reaching theoretical saturation of the information. The processing of the information was done through thematic analysis. Partial results of the study Meaning of obstetric care in nursing interns. Category: Integral Nursing Care in Obstetric Care. Subcategories: a) Comprehensive care: marking the difference b) Confidence for the care given and c) A before and after. Conclusion. the social service potentializes the professional training initiated in the classrooms, propitiates personal and professional satisfaction when the work carried out in the integral care and the social contribution to maintain better maternal health conditions is recognized.

Introduction. Aging is a physiological process in which the organism constantly undergoes changes. This process is accompanied by cognitive decline as well as a decline in functionality for basic activities of daily living (ADLs). Objective. To uncover the relationship between cognitive state and functionality for basic ADLs in the institutionalized elderly. Methodology. Descriptive cross-study of 32 senior citizens of both sexes. With the subjects’ informed consent, Folstein’s Mini-Mental State Examination and the Barthel index were used on the subjects. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used in order to identify the association between variables, and the chi-squared test was used in order to identify the association with gender. A value of P≤0.05 was established to identify significant differences between both groups. Results. 56.2% (n=18) of subjects were women, and 43.75% (n=14) were men. The mean age was 80.5±8.97. The Barthel index identified that only 12.5% (n=4) were independent, while 87.5% (n=28) were functionally dependent to various levels. The Folstein test showed that 6.2% (n=2) were normal, while the rest (n=30) showed signs of some degree of cognitive decline. No significant differences in functionality (p=0.45) or cognitive decline (p=0.85) were found on the basis of sex. Spearman’s correlation revealed r=0.66 and p<0.0001. Conclusion. There is an association between cognitive state and functionality for basic ADLs in institutionalized senior citizens; the greater the level of cognitive decline, the greater the senior citizen’s functional dependency. Gender has no influence on this association.

Research competencies include values and attitudes, cognitive skills and procedural skills. The teacher must be a facilitator of learning. Objective. Analyze the main competences in quantitative research that, during six forums of scientific diffusion, students of Nursing developed in a higher education institution in Mexico. Methodology. Observational, cross sectional, prospective and analytical study. Information units; summaries integrated into the memories of research forums. Sample. 198 abstracts of research works included in the memories of forums XVII to XXII. Results. The competence to work in a team is well developed in the students, because in most cases the teams are made up of 3, 4 or 5 students. 47% of the works synthesized their study well. 61.1% of the works used specialized software. 68.7% with a quantitative approach, 31.3% qualitative, 89.9% without intervention, 40.4% sample sizes greater than 30 units of study, 89.4% non-probability sampling, 20.2% applied hypothesis testing, 15.7% correctly interpreted the “p” value and 88.9% was consistent objective, results and conclusions. Conclusions. Team work predominates, cognitive skills are deficient and procedural skills, related to the methodology and the use of specialized software, are barely sufficient. A tendency towards the use of simple designs was observed, without interventions, with scarce procedures that allow statistical inference, omission of hypothesis tests and incorrect interpretations of statistical concepts important for data analysis.

Introduction. In Mexico, colon cancer ranks the fourth place of morbidity and mortality with reference to other types of cancer. The risk factors related to the pathology are: hyperlipidemic diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress, drug addiction, gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases; among others. The identification of exposed populations allows extending the scope of primary prevention against colon cancer. Objective. Compare the level of risk to develop colon cancer in professors of the School of Higher Studies Iztacala (FES-I), with training in health sciences and professors of the School of Higher Studies Acatlán (FES-A), dedicated to social sciences and humanities. Methodology. A quantitative, comparative cross-sectional study was carried out, with a probabilistic sample of 92 FES-A and 93 FES-I academics. A 40-item instrument was applied, based on the main elements that propitiate the appearance of colon cancer. Results. data analysis reveals a higher percentage of obesity, high consumption of alcohol, tobacco and red meat, as well as less knowledge about factors predisposing to the disease, in teachers of FES-A. Conclusions. FES-A academics have more risk factors than FES-I professors. It is necessary to disseminate quality knowledge about this pathology to raise awareness about inappropriate dietary habits, as well as the consumption of protective foods within it, for the prevention of this neoplasm.

Introduction: In Yucatán since 2017, type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been the leading cause of hospital mortality, with 269 cases. Because this condition is a public health problem, we propose the following educational strategy for diabetes and social support with the goal of improving the quality of care and self-management. Goal: To evaluate the effect of an empowerment-based educational training of community peers (CPs) to specialize in self-management of T2D. Methodology: Quasi-experimental prospective study without a control group. 19 sessions of 2 hours each, based on Tang and Funell's curriculum and Kolb's theory of experimental learning. The following were measured before and after the intervention: a) knowledge relating to diabetes; b) facilitation skills based on empowerment; c) active listening skills; and d) self-efficacy. Results: 8 female subjects, average age 49. 50% were not in control of their diabetes. Averages before and after the intervention: knowledge (13.75 and 19.62), facilitation skills based on empowerment (3.12 and 13.75), active listening skills (27 and 35.75), and perceived self-efficacy (94.25% after the intervention). Discussion and conclusions: The CP with basic knowledge of the illness will understand and analyze practical aspects of care rather than pathophysiology, which will facilitate treatment. Sharing experiences through pair conversations furthered the exchange of knowledge, as this method is vital in an educational intervention based on experiences. CPs developed competencies in formulating open questions, thinking critically, using the five-step goal-setting model to design a plan of action, and confronting emotions. A curriculum centered on empowerment is an effective tool for training CPs in the studied population.

Introduction: The safety of care in emergency units is directly related to triage classification, having been patients stratification by degree of urgency an evidence of quality.  Objective: To determine the efficiency of the triage system in a public hospital emergency unit in southern Chile.  Methodology: A cross sectional descriptive study was carried out within a representative random sample of 377 records obtained out of 69613 users over the age of 15 who consulted in 2015 a Chilean public hospital. The categorization of severity, waiting time, patient destination, morbid history record, allergies and risk of falls were studied. Frequency distribution, median, and interquartile range [ICR] were analyzed. The efficiency of the triage system was based on compliance with the quality criteria already established.  Results: 40.8% of users were categorized C3 and 50% of users C1 and C2 were attended within the stipulated time. The waiting time less than 15 minutes for categorization was 78.5%, below the optimal threshold. The median time to perform an electrocardiogram in patients C2 and C3 was 5 [RIC=4-19] and 15 minutes [RIC=10-218], respectively. C1 users were hospitalized in critical patients care service and half of the C2 users were referred to their homes.  Conclusions: Retarding attention of huge risk users and categorizing into higher risk than the real one, results in delaying attention and saturation of hospital emergency units, causing deficit in the efficiency of the triage system and the quality of attention.

Introduction: A recurring trait of today's societies is the aging of their populations. It is no easy task for the elderly to get used to this period of their lives. Therefore, it is important to consider self-help groups as one way to foster personal satisfaction. Goal: To uncover the experiences within the framework of a self-help group which contribute to senior citizens' personal satisfaction. Methodology: Qualitative study of six senior citizens. Data analysis following Miles and Huberman's framework. Criteria of scientific rigor, credibility, and auditability were followed. Regarding ethical aspects the General Health Law was considered, specifically Title 5, Article 100, Section IV, which deals with informed consent of subjects involved in a study. Findings: One category entitled “Personal Satisfaction,” with four subcategories: “Building Emotional Bonds,” “Trust and Listening,” “Receiving Support from Peers,” and “A Taste for Recreation.” Conclusion: Self-help groups are an excellent way for senior citizens to find communal living, trust, and mutual concern. These groups foster a sense of belonging, which contributes significantly to reduce the potential risk of sadness, loneliness, or a sense of abandonment.

Introduction: Many countries in Latin America and around the world have agreed to enact legislation with the purpose of preventing and eradicating domestic violence. Nevertheless, insufficient action has been taken to solve this problem effectively. Nursing as a field of study must be involved in the search for this solution. Goal: To describe the nursing care requirements perceived as necessary by women in shelter houses who have suffered from life-threatening abuse at the hands of their partners. Methodology: Qualitative and descriptive case study. Field notes were recorded, and an in-depth interview of key informants was conducted. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman's framework; ethical considerations were kept in mind throughout the investigation. Findings: The following categories emerged from the analysis: “domestic environment” and “woman's attitude” (from the field notes); “generic (popular) care,” “professional care,” and “specific required nursing care” (from the interviews). The main subcategories of each category were identified. Discussion: The discovery of the aforementioned dimensions is relevant to the nursing discipline, as this establishes a consistency between these findings and the state of the art in terms of shortages and requirements of these women, such as protection, security, support, guidance, education, and the need to restructure their lives as well as those of their children. Conclusion: It is necessary to formulate care protocols and specific care models in inter-sectoral public services. These protocols and models must be culturally appropriate and significant, and must guide the practice, focusing on the essence of the nurse's knowhow and social responsibility.
