This text reviews the relationship between citizenship and culture. Exploring social science literature on these terms to analyze particular social subjects, both in their action and their conceptualization, has led us to consider that citizenships are diverse, heterogenous and with unequal positions in regard to other citizens and in their relationship with the sphere of the State. Each group of citizens lives and models its social action based on its own identity configurations, codes and cultural dispositions, all of which are affected by power, gender, class and ethnicity relations. Citizenships express -through their actions, emotions, and thoughts – the social, political, economic and cultural diversity of our contemporary conflictive societies. Two considerations develop in this text: first, the discussion is addressed from citizen practices; a second look highlights the cultural dimension that these practices express about specific citizen rights.

The present article sheds light on religious orientations inside an upper-middle-class Catholic family in Mexico City’s Hipódromo-Condesa neighborhood. The outcome of ethnographic observation and in-depth interviews, the data is presented in the form of a free narrative that reveals three different orientations: conservative Catholicism; the search for new experiences within the ecclesiastic institution; and generational inflection as influenced by social surroundings, all centered on a dynamic Catholic culture that interacts with the global church’s major trends as well as with increasing religious diversity in urban centers.

This work consists of a photographic essay about domestic altars accompanied by their owners’ narratives. It aims to address the Catholic religiosity which is practiced on a daily basis in non-ecclesial spaces. This ethnographic work (based on photographic records and interviews) is focused on the altars’ materialism (which makes beliefs visible) and on narratives giving account of their symbolic meanings as well as appropriations and uses of Catholic images in the believers’ daily lives. We deal with three scenarios for the assembly and practice of these shrines; domestic (they are usually private, individual and are located inside the homes). Semi-private (in workplaces such as offices, market stalls, bars and workshops), which even though they are cared for by only one person they are exposed to the public and used for religious practices by those who attend these places. Public ones (streets or neighborhoods) are placed in open spaces (a sidewalk, square or street corner), activate collective practices and are often protected by a community. We consider it a novel methodological proposal to approach the understanding of these religious experiences on their non-ecclesial logic.

The documentary entitled El Hombre-camión (2013) is the outcome of research undertaken by the collective Caracol Urbano with regard to public-transportation problematics in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (acronym in Spanish: amg). We show how the collaborative audiovisual methodology we developed has allowed us to drive a collaborative relationship between various social agents, as a means of building the Users and Operators United Front as well as successive collective actions organized to improve the amg’s public transportation. One major notion was improving public-transport bus drivers’ work conditions as a necessary factor for improving overall service.

The zapatista movement has developed an explicit discourse about time, which gets radicalized to the point its reconfiguration into a rebellion carried out from the resistance is desired. This article, from the Critical Analysis of Discourse (CAD), will address the narratives of the future in zapatismo, particularly, the narratives endorsed in the Hydra and the Coming Storm allegory. The concept of dystopistics is proposed to highlight the feasibility and rational evaluation of possible scenarios of the socially unsuccessful.

The present work uses a “road-anthropology” perspective to analyze the way in which our individual bodies are historically and culturally conformed as road-bodies. The conceptual framework largely draws on various sociological trends in Goffman and Bourdieu, as well as performance-anthropology, proxemics, phenomenology and the political economy of culture. I analyze street-anthropology’s various origins based on my own biography as an anthropologist as well as how ethnographic experience gave rise to a new conceptualization of street-cultures and their connections to real corporeal practices on streets and paths. I include experienced and observed comparative ethnographic cases from England, the United States, Uruguay and Argentina that illustrate how culture, society and the state lend form to our street-bodies.
