Paraguay is a member of the South American Initiative for the Control and Surveillance of Cystic Echinococcosis. In order to optimize the epidemiological reports on hydatidosis, we present three clinical cases seen in national centers and we carry out a review of the local literature on the topic. From 1969 to date, 70 cases of cystic echinococcosis have been described. Systematic epidemiological studies are required to assess the degree of penetration, geographic distribution, and transmission characteristics of this disease in our country.

Globalmente hay una percepción de que vamos de una epidemia a otra, y en el Paraguay de hoy nos sentimos un poco protagonistas en este sentido. Luego de una gran epidemia de Dengue a inicios del 2020, si inició la pandemia del SARS-CoV2; y cuando esta apenas nos daba un descanso, se inició una gran epidemia de Chikungunya que hasta la fecha es de las más grandes reportadas en las Américas, lo cual ha alertado a todos los países de la región(1). El virus de Chikungunya ya fue descrito circulando en Paraguay durante el 2015 y el 2016, con algunos brotes concentrados en el Departamento Central y Asunción. En aquella oportunidad circuló el genotipo asiático, en co-circulación de otros arbovirus, como Zika y Dengue de manera importante. Durante el mes de abril del 2018 se volvió a describir otro brote importante al norte del país, en la ciudad de Pedro Juan Caballero. Fue la primera vez que circuló el genotipo Este-Centro-Sur-Africa (ECSA), y en aquella oportunidad observamos con mayor claridad la gran “aparatosidad” clínica de la enfermedad en sus diferentes fases: aguda, subaguda y crónica(2).

The objective of this article is to describe and analyze the trajectory ofthe nationalization of telephony in Santa Catarina and the actions and investmentsof Companhia Catarinense de Telecomunicações (COTESC) between 1965, whenthe State Telecommunications Council was created, and 1973, when COTESCwas federalized. The article begins with a brief reflection on nationalization andprivatization, in an attempt to detach them from preconceived ideologies. It then presents an overview of the telephony nationalization process in Brazil and theinitiatives of Companhia Catarinense de Telefonia (CTC) to implement a statetelephony network. The most detailed study refers to the actions and investmentscommanded by COTESC between 1969 and 1973, with an analysis of each yearof this period. Each year, the focus is on the implementation of the TelecommunicationsMaster Plan, the expansion of the Emergency Network (1st and 2nd phase) andthe Priority Urban Network. Finally, an analysis is made of the limits of theaccumulation of COTESC, whose investments began to be below what wasexpected by society, which, based on a national strategy of centralization oftelephone services, resulted in its federalization.

This article structures the underdeveloped condition of Brazil and the alternatives to overcome it by comparing the approaches of two prominent interpreters of the country's economic formation, Celso Furtado and Fernando Henrique Cardoso. The authors come together in several aspects but diverge in others in which they encourage the debate on interpretations, especially regarding the ways to overcome the underdevelopment of Brazil. The analysis of the two perspectives indicates that Furtado aims to present solutions to overcome underdevelopment by directing the productive forces towards technological development and facilitating the accumulation process, towards the endogenization of development, based on improvements for the community and increased external autonomy. On the other hand, Cardoso's approach comprises international relations to accelerate gains and skipping steps in the technological field, through responsible action by the State in a democratic political regime.

 This article scrutinizes the evolution of Brazilian thought on electricity policy from 1945 to 1964, focusing on the topics of planning of electricity supply expansion, the FDI vs. state ownership conundrum, and the relationship between electricity supply growth and inflation. The economic debate comprised two main concurring camps during this period, one monetarist/orthodox and another developmentalist/structuralist. This bipartisan division was also present in the electricity policy debate. It is argued that while there was some degree of convergence between the two camps regarding the issue of planning, in the other two core topics of the debate, divergence was the tonic. However, despite the marked division in the economic epistemic community regarding electricity policy, political and economic conditions favored policy experimentation with a pragmatic policy stance that combined features from states and markets- which combined ideas from both camps-, even after the 1964 coup, when the debate had been mostly neutralized.

This article investigates the development of Brazilian cotton trade with Germany between the outset of the 1930’s Brazilian cotton surge and the last cotton exports to Germany at the beginning of the Second World War. In order to analyze foreign interest in the product and evaluate the significance of these transactions in German demand for cotton, as well understand its importance in the Brazilian balance of payments and its diplomatic implications, especially with the United States, this article examines production and external trade data in addition to literature regarding Brazilian cotton development and Brazilian commercial and diplomatic relations with Germany and the United States during the Vargas Era.

The work analyzes the debate on the Brazilian agrarian question in theworks of Ignácio Rangel and Milton Santos, seeking to establish a dialogue betweenthe analyzes and categories of these authors with the process of constitution of theBrazilian Agroindustrial Complex and of the Brazilian Cerrado as a productiveregion of agribusiness. In the second half of the 20th century, this biome wasintegrated into the regional division of labor and incorporated into Braziliancapitalism, which raised the Brazilian agrarian issue to a new level. The objective here is, from the analytical categories of the authors, to discuss the constitution anddevelopment of capitalist agriculture in the Cerrado agricultural frontier, surveyingits main characteristics and socioeconomic and spatial impacts. For that, a surveyof the main writings referring to the agrarian question in the work of the authorswill be carried out, the comparison and the summary of the main ideas, for thenits application to the agricultural border case of the Cerrado.

This article aims to reconstruct the formation of the financial system and its importance in the Chinese economic reform of the late 1970s and 1980s. The hypothesis defended in this study is to show how this expansion led the Chinese financial sector to the current logic centered on the performance and direction of the State. The financial reform developed under these premises, consolidating itself in the economic opening and in the financing of light industries aimed at exports, and together with joint ventures directed by the State policies, making it essential to increase the investment capacity in the country and recover the backwardness existing economic and industrial. The expansion of the financial system consolidated a robust economic growth, through the increase in the volume of deposits and the participation of this credit in strategic national business sectors. That way, managed to overcome its developmental delay, demonstrating that it is possible to accelerate and improve the quality of economic growth through the development and centralization of financial intermediation.

A Economia Institucional Original é um segmento do pensamento econômico genuinamente estadunidense. No entanto, hoje, o institucionalismo original “migrou” para outros países. O objetivo desse estudo é analisar se há uma vertente da Economia Institucional Original no Brasil. Para tal identificamos quem são os institucionalistas originais que atuam no Brasil e analisamos o tipo de institucionalismo que eles produzem – seus artigos científicos – e o tipo de institucionalismo que eles reproduzem – o programa de suas disciplinas. Os nossos resultados apontam que não é possível afirmar que existe uma vertente da Economia Institucional Original no Brasil, mas há institucionalistas originais brasileiros – que pode ser um primeiro passo para uma vertente institucionalista original brasileira – e há brasileiros que lidam com Economia Institucional de forma mais abrangente que Institucionalismo Original.
