As a reply to a contribution informing about the situation in Spanish sociology of sport (Sánchez-García, Moscoso-Sánchez and Piedra 2020), we give an overview on the development and recent trends of the sociology of sport in Germany. We start with a historical account of its institutionalization, and then follow up with an overview of established research topics and theoretical perspectives. For that, we draw on established German textbooks and introductions to the sociology of sport. Afterwards, regarding more recent trends, we focus on the development of the journal “Sport und Gesellschaft – Sport and Society”. Finally, we describe how the sociology of sport within German sociology relates to the sociology of sport within sport sciences. We conclude our contribution by comparing developments in Spain and Germany, in order to identify similar international challenges for the sociology of sports and its journals.

In this article we analyze specifically the possible relationships or associations within different aspects of psychological well-being and perceived life satisfaction of the elderly, taking into account the intensity of their physical activity. Data items have been selected through stratified sampling by quotas with proportional affixation and a confidence level of 95%. Our analysis examines the associations within five categories using an unfolding model. The perception of psychological well-being and life satisfaction has been assessed by 14 statements. The study illustrates how elderly people who practice sports regularly and show an interest in them declare they feel good about themselves, can accomplish every challenge, set themselves goals that give meaning to their lives, have friends they can trust and feel full satisfaction with their current life.

In this study we evaluate the possible underlying causes of certain infractions in sport contests. We take strain theories as theoretical framework. These theories, in their classic versions, predict that the lack of opportunities some people face are the causes of certain deviant behaviours. However, contemporary versions of strain theories maintain that the relationship between strain and deviance is indirect. That is, through certain negative emotions (Agnew 1992). This study uses data from a survey of active athletes (n=349) that provides information on negative emotions. A factorial analysis reveals two latent variables that depict negative emotions that appear respectively before and after the competition. A set of mediation analysis with the PROCESS tool Version 3.4.1 (Hayes 2018) reports that only negative emotions after the competition have mediating effects. The results are analysed and discussed.

Since its recent outbreak and its rapid global spread, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented health and social crisis. Millions of people found their daily lives disrupted and have been confined for several weeks with the aim of reducing the contagion curve and preventing the collapse of health systems. Being aware of the risks to physical and mental health associated with a sedentary lifestyle, public authorities have attempted to promote an active lifestyle through physical exercise at home. Based on some of the sociological categories established by Pierre Bourdieu, this reflective article aims to discuss the realization (or not), by different sectors of the population, of physical exercise at home in the current context of confinement. Our position is that, in unequal social structures, typical of neoliberal states, the most disadvantaged sectors cannot even consider exercising. Strategies that focus on individual motivation not only cannot be effective, but also blame those who have no capital and no disposition to train in their homes.
