Pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes has been linked to oxidative stress. Synthetic drugs in use for the management of the stress and type 2 diabetes are expensive and their usage are associated with side effects. Some essential oils exhibited antioxidant and antidiabetic properties devoid of the effects. Their activities are attributed to the type of phytochemicals whose presence in the oils of the fresh and dried samples are determined by environmental factors.  This study therefore aimed at monitoring the effect of air-drying at ambient temperature on the phytochemical profile, antidiabetic and antioxidant potentials of leaf essential oils of E.globulus. To achieve this, 500 g of fresh and dried leaves of E. globuluswere separately pulverized and hydrodistilled for three hours. The leaves yielded oils in the range of 0.22–0.55% (w/w). GC and GC–MS analyses of the oils revealed predominance of α-phellandrene (4.6–10.5%), D-limonene (18.5%) , β-myrcene (20.8%), m-cymene (5.0-29.8%), terpinen-4-ol (0.4-4.7%), globulol (3.1-10.5%) and spathulenol (4.9-18.8%). The antioxidant activity of the oils was determined by DPPH and FRAP assays using ascorbic acid as standard. α-Amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory assays were used to determine the antidiabetic potential of the oils using acarbose as standard. The oils exhibited antioxidant and antidiabetic activities that compared favourably with the standards. Meanwhile, the oil obtained from the leaves air-dried for three days showed the highest activities with competitive mode of α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitions. The oil could serve as alternative for the management of oxidative stress and type 2 diabetes.

Algae based third generation biodiesel production is a recent advancement in renewable energy due to its minimal land requirements, cultivation in wastelands etc than food stock based second generation biodiesel production. This paper addresses on the study the optimum yield of biodiesel produced from oxygenic photosynthetic bacteria-based Spirulina Platensis algae by microwave assisted transesterification. Effect of microwave irradiation time which affects the temperature on the extraction of algal oil and simultaneous in-situ transesterification was investigated for biodiesel production. The response surface methodology using Box Behnken Design was used to analyze constituent parameters like catalyst concentration, alcohol concentration and process parameters like microwave time. Results indicate that microwave assisted transesterification produces 71.7% of biodiesel with respect to algae dry weight at catalyst concentration of 1.6%, with alcohol concentration of 1:9.7 and microwave irradiation time of 3.2 minutes

We have studied the electronic and electrochemical properties of seven substituted heterocyclic chalcones (CHL 1-6) wich are functionalized with 2-thienyl groups. The phenyl ring of the chalcone scaffold has been substituted in orto or para position with electron donnor and acceptor groups (-F, -NO2, -CH3O). The electrochemical features were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry; irreversible processes were observed and attributed to the oxidation and reduction of the 2-thienyl group and the carbonyl group of the chalcone, respectively. DFT calculations were made to gain more in-depth understanding of their electronic properties. Relatively high HOMO level and low LUMO values were calculated, Eg values computed varies between 3.0-3.29 eV. These values enable us to postulate that these type of compounds are suitable building blocks to fabricate optoelectronic devices.

The genus Sophora (Fabaceae) has been used by different cultures for medicinal and ceremonial reasons. This has led to describe and isolate the compounds present in the different parts of different species. In this review, we surveyed the secondary metabolites present in 20 different species of Sophora, which have been identified, isolated, and purified between 1969 and 2020. The aims of this review are demonstrate the spatial temporal evolution of research in the identification of secondary metabolites in the genus Sophora and determine the secondary metabolites identified and classified in the different species of the genus Sophora which may serve as a potential guide for future research. The countries with the highest number of species studied are China, South Korea, and the United States of America. The species that presented a greater identification of compounds are S. alopecuroides, S. secundiflora, S. tonkinensis and S. flaveceses, presenting a wide variety of compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, flavones, flavanones, chalcones, among others. The most studied plant parts in research are the roots, seed, and leaves, but in some species only one part was studied, leaving the possibility of studying the rest of the plant. And the difference in the presence of compounds in species that are present in different geographic positions should be considered for future studies.

Recent advances in nanotechnology and the synthesis of nanoparticles through biosynthesis have increased the urge in scientists than for chemical or physical methods. The biosynthesis method is the most significant method than a conventional method because of its eco-friendly, low cost and rapid synthesizing process. The present study describes the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from leaf extracts of Dypsis lutescens. The synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by colour change from light yellow to brown colour. Further, the morphology of the biosynthesized nanoparticles, average size and presence of functional groups were characterized by UV – Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. The UV spectra results show a strong resonance center and surface of silver nanoparticles at 450 nm. XRD studies revealed that the synthesized AgNPs show crystalline in shape. The FT-IR spectrum described the biological molecules which stabilize and form the silver nanoparticles in the aqueous medium. The average AgNPs size was found to be 31 nm by using the Debye-Scherrer formula. The antimicrobial property of AgNPs was tested against Escherichia coli (MTCC 443) and Vibrio cholerae (MTCC 3906) pathogen, which showed maximum zones of inhibition of 22 mm at a concentration of 100 µL. Therefore, the biosynthesized AgNPs proved to have significant antibacterial activity.

The relationship between the density of seawater and acidified mixtures samples in the presence of up to a maximum concentrations of 0.18 m for Cu(II), 0.34 m for Mn(II) or 0.6 m for Al(III), in selected temperatures used in the copper leaching process (283.15 - 313.15 K), showed a positive linear behavior with salinity and cation concentration. The influence of temperature on the density rate changes was similar when comparing the three solutes in acidified solutions of different salinity. The effect of temperature on the change in density did not exceed 1% and by concentration, the greatest influence was due to Al(III) with 5.43%, in agreement with its greater relative quantity. The data obtained, using a vibrating tube density meter, were used to analyze and correlate to the Apelblat equation that was favorably applied to calculate the isobaric expansibility coefficient. The temperature had an influence on the isobaric expansibility coefficient values, suggesting a making interaction effect due to majority anions present in the seawater and mixture samples (Cl- > SO4-2), and a breaking interaction effect when the cations Cu(II), Mn(II) or Al(III) were added.
