We analyze main sources of total factor productivity (TFP) growth from the regional manufacturing industry of Mexico in the long run, with a stochastic frontier and technical inefficiency models Battese and Coelli (1992, 1995), and apply a decomposition of TFP method as developed by Nishimizu and Page (1982) and Kumbhakar, Denny and Fuss (2000). One finding was that technological change and technical efficiency change are the main sources explaining observed trends in regional TFP of Mexico, between 1960 and 2013.

Understanding the relationship between parents’ and sons’ formal employment is essential for promoting social mobility in Mexico. Using the 2011 Survey of Social Mobility in Mexico (EMOVI), this paper contributes to the literature by addressing the intergenerational mobility of employment. Findings show a strong connection between intergenerational employment choices and suggest a positive selection for workers. Individuals with parents who worked in the formal sector are more likely to be enrolled in formal work and vice versa. Also, after controlling for parent’s employment sector, schooling remains as a significant vehicle to transit to the formal sector.

The problem of jointly estimating unobserved trends and cycles of a bivariate time series considered here appears within the macroeconomic context of Okuns Law when relating output gaps and the unemployment rate. Joint estimation of the output and unemployment trends is carried out by applying a bivariate time series filter that allows for simultaneous estimation of the correlation between cycles. The estimation procedure employed is based on an extension of the univariate Hodrick-Prescott filter and its application in practice is relatively easy. The main contribution of our approach is that we can control the amount of smoothness in the trends by fixing the smoothing parameter. The empirical application uses data on U.S. real gross domestic product and the unemployment rate.

In this work, we analyze the possible evolution of an economy in which,up to a certain point, the State acted as a monopolist in the provision of a set of public services and, faced with a change in the economic situation, poses itself, the question about whether these services should continue to be, as they were until then, provided by the State or, if the service should be handed over to private individuals. Regardless of the answer to this question, it is assumed that they should be provided without exclusions and with the same quality to all citizens regardless of their wealth. This is a basic principle that guides the economies of countries that, like Sweden, are governed by the rules of the welfare state. We introduce a model based on game theory to analyze the evolution of this process and its possible outcomes.

Obesity has an adverse impact not only on health but also on the labor market outcomes of individuals. Using anthropometric data and the body mass index (BMI), we analyze the effects of obesity on the decision to work and the wages of Mexican workers aged 20-60. We use children’s BMI as an instrumental variable for the BMI of their parents. Our results show that for men, BMI does not affect their decision to work or their wages. For women, however, an increase of one standard deviation in the BMI is associated with a 16% decrease in hourly wages. The findings are highly robust under different specifications.

This article presents three methods to estimate the monthly GDP in Mexico: (1) a deterministic approach; (2) an extension of Denton method; and, (3) the Kalman filter. In these methods the monthly GDP is regarded as an unobservable variable that is approximated using only the IGAE. Results show that the three methods do a good job in adjusting the observed data of the quarterly GDP within the sample, with average adjustment errors of at most 0.1%. Additionally, given the dynamic structure of the Kalman filter method and that under different estimation periods it was found that the parameters corresponding remained relatively stable. Therefore, this method was used to perform out-of-sample forecasts.

We estimate reduced form models, the profits are function of observable variables, to analyze the determinants of supermarket entry. We find that more concentrated markets, constructed on chain information, diminish the incentives to enter a market. Additionally, by controlling for market concentration and by analyzing the specific impact of brand chain, we find that a larger number of Walmart stores increase the feasibility of zero and one store in the relevant market and diminishes the feasibility of two or more stores in the market. For the other chains we find an opposite result.

Building on a novel elasticities-based growth accounting decomposition, this note puts the insufficient dynamism of Mexico’s exports and the inertia of its segmented economy at the heart of its unsatisfactory per capita GDP growth. Boosting exports without exacerbating protectionism would require a shift toward more innovative products or with higher demand elasticities. This in turn would imply a greater shift toward a knowledge economy and exports of personal services. Making Mexico more attractive to people through strengthening the rule of law and preserving the country’s ecological and touristic capital should therefore be at the center of the country’s growth agenda.

In this study, we analyzed the differences in the interest rates of microfinance institutions (MFIs) of some countries in Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia. We found that the operating expenses are essential drivers of these interest rates. We also found that operating expenses, average loan per borrower, real growth GDP, and government effectiveness, are key factors that explain differences in interest rates. We use apply Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) to analyze these differences.

We analyze the convergence of local price levels in Mexico through a pairwise approach. For this purpose, we apply unit root tests to the relative prices of all possible combinations of cities and different goods and services. One of the main advantages of this approach is that a city of reference is not chosen as the basis for relative price levels in the analysis of stationarity. The approach is applied to monthly series of general and disaggregated indexes of a sample of prices of goods and services in the period 1982-2016. The results allow to reject the null hypothesis of non-convergence between the relative prices for most of the analyzed goods and services of the cities considered, although the convergence is to some extent limited.
