Some historians consider that a book is a milestone that opens new avenues to the writing of history, while others see it simply as the identification symbol of an academic school. This was the fate of Les Rois thaumaturgues by Marc Bloch (1924), a book that some French historians regard as the beginning of the histoire des mentalités. The book is a case study of the royal touch, a medieval ritual of healing the disease called scrofulae by touching with the hands of the kings of France and England. This article analyzes Bloch’s work in relation to the theories of the so-called “sacred kingship”, especially the one proposed by J. G. Frazer, and with the birth and development of the histoire des mentalités.

This article examines the way in which the graphic novel Maus has represented the multiple dimensions and problems we encounter when representing a limit-event such as the Holocaust. To this purpose, some previous words on the possibilities of the comic to represent the past are needed. Then, we analyze the main resources of Art Spiegelman’s work to represent the Shoah, by ending with some final reflections on the ability of the so-called postmodern historiographic experiments to narrate the suffering and experiences lived by the victims and their legatees, in relation to phenomena such as the Final Solution.

In this study, we examine the way through which France is facing some traumatic pasts during the presidential term of Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012), and particularly the historiographical debates, public controversies and social demands which memory wars conceal on two this topics: the appropriation of the memory of the young communist Guy Môquet, assassinated by the Nazis during the Second World War, and his electoral instrumentalization of the Algerian war. The Fifth Republic has developed an institutional policy based upon the promulgation of a series of memory laws which led to numerous reservations within the academic community. This process, and above all the political use of history carried out by Sarkozy, forms the central core in this work, tributary of methods of the so-called history of the present.

The objective of this work is to examine the clues contained in the video game of historical theme. We shall start with the distinction, by Tzvetan Todorov, between literal and exemplary memories by studying two historical titles, Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games, 2018) and This War of Mine (11-bit studios, 2014), to illustrate each type of memory. On this basis we will take for its examination three aspects of each of them, the authors’ intention, and the messages and the images contained in the video game. All this, together with the historiographical context, will offer us the necessary information to approach, in more a general context, to the causes and consequences of memories in the mass media.
