Received: 06-25-2019Approved: 09-16-2019 The Costa Rican industrial development was inscribe after the second half of the 20th century in a new political and economic conjuncture set up at the end of the Costa Rican civil war in 1948. In this way, the Costa Rican industrial sector could be expand and enter a process of consolidation continues until 1970. At the same time, the advantages of advertising and advertisements to place products and brands within the national market are beginning to be explored within the written press. The present work rescues through the national press the extent to which the advertising practice of industrial companies was articulated in the context of the new Central American integration, for which advertisements were reviewed within the written press La Nación and La República between the years 1950-1970. The article sees the changes that occurred in the discourse and appeals within the advertisements by the Costa Rican industry and also how the changes in the advertising practice happened. In this way, it concludes that these changes in advertising practice, although they were related to the entrance to the MCCA, were also circumscribed within cultural processes suffered by the country at that time.

Received: 21-03-2019Approved: 07-15-2019 This article analyzes the nationalist, xenophobic, and sexist discourse utilized in social media comments and in reactions to online news about the suggestion of closing the Patriotic Month by singing Nicaragua´s national anthem in some San José schools with a high percentage of Nicaraguan students. Xenophobia against Nicaraguans and sexism against the ministry of education are reflected on the rhetoric of a nationalist discourse against such announcement. Comments emphasize stereotypes of Nicaraguans as violent, illegal, dangerous, threatening, and opportunistic while the ones against the minister take the form of insults on her moral, intelligence, gender, and political knowledge. These discursive practices also evidence the persistence of other domination systems such as racism, classism, and homophobia, which are reflected daily in social media.

The present article consists in a semiotic study of the Costa Rican painting during the decade of the seventies in the 20th century, as well as the end of the non-figuration painting, and with a special emphasis on the informalism present in “Supervivencia” (1971) from artist Lola Fernández. Methodologically speaking, we turn to the semiotic analysis of the artistic text, through a gradual process of interpretation of the sign in three levels (syntactic, semantic and pragmatic). Furthermore, both notions of "informalism" and "abstract art" are conceptualized in this article using a theoretical approach. In addition, this study will refer to the socio-historical context of the I Bienal Centroamericana de Pintura (First Central American Painting Biennial), which took place in 1971. As a result of the previously stated approaches, we will be able to determine how the verdict of the Bienal propelled the Costa Rican non-figuration painting movement to come to an end. Likewise, we disclose refentialities in “Supervivencia” (1971) that were either never seen before, or were maybe omitted by the art critics of that time. Received: 02-20-2019 Approved: 03-29-2019

In Costa Rica, since Colonial times, the Reventazón River was the main geographic obstacle to building a road between the Central Valley and the Caribbean coast. This factor explains why the old road to Matina was substituted by the route that today connects Turrialba with Puerto Limón, through Siquirres. However, it was necessary to install a wooden bridge in 1865, which deteriorated over the years, thus justifying its replacement by an iron bridge during the government of President Julio Acosta García. Its inauguration, on June 3rd, 1923, gave rise to a day of festivities in Turrialba, of which 13 images taken by the famous photographer Manuel Gómez Miralles have been rescued. These so far unpublished photographs are shown in this paper, complemented with information from historical newspapers concerning this important event. Received: 02-18-2019 Approved: 03-29-2019
