The analysis of the novel Mejor la ausencia of Edurne Portela and the stories of Iban Zaldua published after the final cease-fire of ETA highlight the need to continue digging literarily around issues related to the Basque conflict, even when the conflict has entered in another cycle. Portela chooses to offer a review of the violent past through a family chronicle and the rewriting of the same, while in the case of Zaldua, the most recent stories are placed temporarily and thematically in the so-called post-ETA era.

This article explores the representation of the victims in feature films about terrorism in Euskadi released after the announcement of the definitive cessation of the “armed activity” of ETA in 2011. Cinema, as witness and agent of history, has transmitted new concerns, debates and perspectives about past and future in the Basque Country that have emerged or have consolidated in recent years. Many of them allude to the victims or have them as protagonists. As these pages will show, filmmakers have transmitted through their work a certain image of this collective and their memory and have assigned them different roles, more or less active, for the future.

I produce an ethnographically informed anthropological reading of the symbolic intertextuality of the film Gazta Zati Bat. Released in 2012, this Basque documentary tells a series of personal and political stories linked around the enactment of a social movement that was born five years earlier, in a small town of Gipuzkoa province, and whose members have been working towards self-determination rights by producing and adding content to the “Right to decide” drawing inspiration from the Scottish model. The article focuses on the construction of political agency taking into account the creation of a new peaceful sovereignty scenario; it argues that initiatives such as this cultural production allow for rethinking analytical axes concerning the Basque conflict.

Even though more than a hundred films have been shot on ETA, all but one have been bitter pictures of the drama caused by their violence and terror. It would not be until after their announcement to end their armed struggle in 2011 that an unusual path to deal with the influence of terrorism on Spanish society would open, with a series of humor films such as 8 apellidos vascos (2014), Negociador (2014) and Fe de etarras (Bomb scared) (2017). This article analyzes the keys of these films and the necessity that every society develops to face certain crude realities by means of satire and comedy.

The aim of the paper is to show the different legal consideration of decisions based upon religious convictions and those based upon personal preferences according to a vital autonomous project, specially, when these decisions means disobedience to law and a right to conscientious objection is claimed. After an analysis of Osmanoğlu y Kocabaş vs. Switzerland and other case laws, the author suggests a stronger legal protection of decisions based upon religious convictions and the consideration of autodetermination as a liberty more than as a right in the strict sense.

The dialectic between citizens and a foreigners illuminates the profound distance which divides Public Law from the Social Doctrine of the Church. According to the first, the identity of the citizen and the identity of the community are ruled by the laws which rule the belonging. According to the second, no one is a foreigner, and the Church is not foreign to any man. In no place. Should we be content with such distinction and endure the separation of groups, peoples and nations that it implies and supposes? Or should the State and the public law gain a new perspective on the problem? Trying to provide a valid answer to this question, the Author reconstructs the category of citizenship under the sign of duty, identifying in the term "duty" the only concept which could link together freedom, dignity, equality and common good. Keeping universal and particular intertwined, we can therefore propose the definitive overcoming of the ancient dialectic between citizen and civis mundi. Because a cohesive, open and caring society is possible if only both of them know and respect their own duties.
