In this paper, we edit and comment the Carta de M. V. Marcial a Don Manuel Fermín de Laviano, a satire written by Juan Pablo Forner. First, we read the text in its context: the development of the theatrical career of Manuel Fermín de Laviano between 1779 and 1783 and the regal celebrations of August and September 1783. Second, we edit the Carta, after we have compared its two manuscript testimonies. Third, we comment this text as a result of an erudite answer of rejection against the strategies of self-representation as an author made by Laviano, in order to expose himself as a cultured writer. At last, we focus on the relevance of this Carta as a testimony of the Spanish literary controversies from XVIIIth century, which are characterized by the neoclassical paradigm that rules over the writing process as an access to the cultured literary circles.

A theoretical debate took place in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries between those in favour of a ‘naked’ historical writing, deprived of assessments and rhetorical devices, and those in favour of a more traditional idea of history, in which the author’s opinions and eloquence were considered of great value and key to history’s moral and political instruction. Important issues regarding the nature and duties of history were involved in this debate, which also had a significant impact on the idea of the historian as an author and on subjectivity and bias in historical narrative. In this article I will consider these particular aspects of the debate in the theoretical treatises written by Agostino Mascardi (1636), Jerónimo de San José (1651) and Pierre Le Moyne (1670).

López de Sedano opened his Parnaso español with Espinel’s translation of horatian “Arte poética”. Criticism by Iriarte in 1777, as a preamble to his own version of the epistle, gave rise to a series of answers and rejoinders until 1785, with the response in volume VII of the Parnaso and Iriarte’s “joco-serious dialogue” Donde las dan las toman. The controversy moves from the features of translation to the design and production of Sedano’s anthology. The analysis of the final answer in the Colloquios de la espina reveals the aesthetic differences between the two authors, representing two opposing positions in the conception of good taste and the ways to update it. The evaluation of the rules and the poetry of the seventeenth century are two of the central points of the discrepancy.
