This paper standardizes Chilean salaries between 1886 and 1928 to a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) format that allows comparison with salaries in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil during the same period. With this, it is possible to identify the level and trajectory of Chilean salaries vis-à-vis their counterparts in the Southern Cone of Latin America. In addition, it attempts to identify the impact that salary performance could have had on the most identifiable episodes of labor conflict, such as the constitution of Chile as a relatively attractive place for the immigration of European workers. The results show unequivocally that the economic growth of Chile until 1914 was not accompanied by the emergence of a favorable environment for Chilean workers or for the settlement of immigrant workers in relation to Uruguay, Argentina and even Brazil.

This article studies the social experience of smallpox as one of the most continuous and relevant educational vectors of medical and hygienic concerns, in the transformation of the disease as a social problem at the beginning of the twentieth century. This study focuses on the province of Atacama (Chile 1860-1920), an area not yet investigated, where the mining boom caused urban expansion and the concentration of the population, elements that favored the entry and circulation of the disease. Through a sociocultural interpretation, the attention given to the disease is analyzed, deepening around the specificities of the vaccination campaigns and the function of the lazaretto. The medical reaction to precarious institutions was raised as a way to demand state participation. Lastly, the medical concerns about childhood are studied, in its transition from a subject of medical study to the valorization of the child as a fundamental element of the Chilean race, whose salvation from the disease made it indispensable to instruct the family regarding hygienic knowledge that will act through rational practices in their domestic environment.

The impact of the Spanish Civil War has been widely studied with respect to the Argentine case. The contribution of this article is to study the public and cultural life of one of the most prestigious Spanish institutions in Argentina: the Spanish Cultural Institution of Buenos Aires (ICEBA). While the association was responsible for Spanish cultural diplomacy in the country, the ICEBA had official ties with successive Spanish governments, both democratic and dictatorial. This article focuses on its position relating Franco’s triumph and the different inflections that the ICEBA used surrounding the idea of Hispanidad. The article analyzes the institution’s archives, along with other official archives and press.

In this article I examine the role of the Pehuenches in a regional economy characterized by strong inter-ethnic and trans-Andean developments. Within an increasingly violent frontier context on both sides of the Andes Mountains, and new market dynamics, the Pehuenches of Cuyo and Neuquén were key actors in the ranching industry, supplying cattle to the Chilean and Mapuche markets. The lonkos administered access to multiethnic actors to its land, guaranteeing resources, protection and security. This phenomenon also helped the Pehuenches maintain their autonomy. By analyzing diverse state sources, indigenous correspondence and the literature on the subject, this article examines the multiple economic logics of the people involved in the productive and demographic development of the region under study. Furthermore, it contributes to the dialogue between Argentine and Chilean literatures.

During the reign of Philip III (1598-1621) the Spanish monarchy looked to open a commercial route between Seville and Manila by sending of a series of socorros to the Philippines. Only one of these armadas managed to arrive to Manila under the command of Ruy González de Sequeira, although there were various attempts made. This study analyzes the sending of these armadas within the Asian politics of the Spanish Monarchy of Philip III and Philip IV. This is an analysis that obligates us to consider not only the global context but the impact of these armadas and the politics in which they were sustained in relation to the Portuguese and Spanish empires during the Reign of Philip III.

The article examines the historical configuration of the Chilean energy matrix throughout the twentieth century and understands it as the result of the relative expansion and decline of three interdependent socio-technical regimes: coal, petroleum and electricity. For each of these regimes the article studies the techno-political definitions that guided its development. These definitions were represented as “problems” by the elites of an ideological, social or economic nature, which should be resolved by the State and the private sector.

This article studies the written production and the networks of intellectual sociability developed by Félix Frías during his stay in France, between 1848 and 1855. Throughout this period, while working as a correspondent for El Mercurio, Frías broke his ties with the historicist political language that the members of the Joven Generación Argentina had adopted a decade before. His thinking began to manifest a negative historical and anthropological perspective, characterized by a timeless duality between good and evil, morality and corruption. He structured instead an ultramontane and conservative language, centered on Catholicism and on the figure of the Roman Pontiff as guarantors of order and, in the future, freedom and democracy.
