As an alternative control method, to improve control and to reduce synthetic fungicide use, three Candida oleophila strains and/or four commercial synthetic fungicides were used to control Botrytis cinerea damage on postharvest apple fruit. Synthetic commercial fungicides; Cyprodinil+Fludioxonil, Thiabendazole and Benomyl, allowed Candida oleophila strains colony growth when challenged to the pressure of these fungicides. Synthetic commercial fungicide Captan did not allow any Candida oleophila strains colony growth. Control of Botrytis cinerea expressed in % of damage and damage reduction, gave an average control of; 100% for Cyprodinil+Fludioxonil; Captan, 97.5%; Thiabendazole, 94.1% and Benomyl, 93.7% All Candida oleophila strains, individually, gave a 100% control. Thiabendazole and Benomyl improved their efficiency to control Botrytis cinerea when combined with Candida oleophila. Control of Botrytis cinerea damage on postharvest Golden Delicious apple fruit can be achieved up to 100% either with Candida oleophila strains individually and/or with Cyprodinil+Fludioxonil alone. The use of Candida oleophila as an alternative method to control Botrytis cinerea damage on postharvest apple fruit means a reduction of synthetic fungicide use, plus avoiding fungicide residues on the treated apple fruit and on the environment, thus reducing the risk for human health damage.

Arsenic is a toxic element for human health. It persists in the environment as a result of natural and anthropic contamination, generating nocive effects for consumers. Some of them can be cancer, cardiovascular disorders, hypotension, metabolic disease and peripheral neuropathy. Adsorption is considered to be one of the most effective technologies widely used in global environmental protection areas. The objective of this study was to generate a low cost agglomerated alumina adsorbent (A-1) for the effective removal of arsenic (V) from water and its comparison with a commercial agglomerated alumina (A-2). Both of them of 5 mm of diameter. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbents were characterized by various techniques, such as: XRF, zeta potential, XRD, adsorption-desorption of N2 and FE-SEM/EDS. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the efficiency of removal of As (V) from water by A-1 and A-2. The point of zero charge of A-1 and A-2 was at pH 8.5 and 8.1, respectively. The experimental results in batches indicated that agglomerate A-1 has a higher adsorption capacity than A-2 (1.212 mg∙g-1; 1.058 mg∙g-1) in similar conditions, concentration of 15 mg∙L-1 of As (V), temperature (20± 2 °C) and pH 7. The adsorption processes of As (V) in A-1 and A-2 followed the kinetics of Pseudo-first order kinetic and the Freundlich isotherm. The results showed that the agglomerate A-1 is an attractive adsorbent for the effective removal of As (V) from water.

This paper presents a controller performance that is develop employing an adaptive B-spline neural network algorithm for adjusting the rotor speed of the permanent magnet synchronous motor. It includes a comparative analysis with three control strategies: conventional proportional integral, sliding mode and fuzzy logic. Also, gives a systematic way to determine the optimal control gains and improve the tracking error performance. A methodology for the adaptive controller and its training procedure are explained. The efficacy of the proposed method is analyzed using time simulations where the motor is subjected to disturbances and reference changes. The proposed control technique exhibits the best performance because it can adapt to every condition, demanding low computational effort for an on-line operation and considering the system nonlinearities.

This article portrays the complex ways in which theurgy, or ritual practice, and philosophy, relate to each other in Late Antique post-plotinian Platonism, particularly Proclus’s case (Vth C.), one of the most outstandig Hellenic philosophers. Being the activity of a divine eros, theurgy operates according to philosophical principles; it’s seen as an ethical tool. Also, it is linked with what Plato called the mania o sacred madness. And it is related too with the mantike, the hieratike techne and the telestike. The main objective of this article is to point towards a necessary modification of the still predominant view regarding the platonic philosophy of this period, as well as to signal the link between theurgy and fields of knowledge commonly seen as independent inside philosophy itself, resulting in a much more complete interpretation regarding the complex philosophical practice developed by the late Platonists.

This paper deals with sexual violence against women in Polybius’ Histories. Modern scholarship on the subject is scarce and has not addressed this issue. Though women did not play a central role in the narrated deeds in the work, some passages seem to relate women’s rape to concrete political and didactic reflexions. Here, it is argued that Polybius consciously explored the consequences of the degradation of alliances between states and its transformation from equality to tyrannical rule by using an explicit sexual metaphor. In that sense, the examples of Philip V of Macedon, the Carthaginians in Iberia, and Scipio Africanus are studied.

The lionfish (Pterois volitans) is a species of reef fish that has invaded the Western Atlantic in a dizzying manner. The objective of this study was to characterize the diet of the lionfish in the coastal zone of Holguín, Cuba. For this purpose, eight sampling campaigns were conducted during the period April-November 2016 in six coastal sites, including frontal, artificial reefs and bays located between 14 and 35 m deep. A total of 250 specimens with sizes between 8 and 33 cm of standard length were collected. Through stomach contents analysis, 27 types of prey were identified, which were grouped into the trophic categories of fish, crustaceans and mollusks. The fish were the principal component in the diet of the lionfish according to the numerical, frequency, gravimetric methods and the index of relative importance. Within the preys, the fish species Holocentrus rufus and Monocanthus tuckeri were the most representative. The diet of the lionfish in the study area reflected the availability of prey at each site, suggesting that it is an opportunistic predator (Levin index = 0.91). No statistical differences were found in relation to the similarity between the sampling sites based on the contribution of the weight of the different components consumed.

The population structure of Limia zonata (Nichols, 1915) was studied in four locations in the Maimón River, Monseñor Nouel province, Dominican Republic. The sex and adult-juveniles ratio was calculated for all sampled localities. It was found that the sex ratio of L. zonata was significantly different from 1: 1 and is biased towards females (1.0: 1.6). Juvenile fish were more abundant and frequent than adults (69.3%). More than 800 fish were measured and weighed to analyze the frequency of size classes, morphometry and body condition. Ten size classes were distinguished that vary in frequency according to sex. Total length of the specimens ranged from 6.50 to 65.69 mm, while weight varied between 0.004 and 3.941 g. The morphology varied between sexes and a pronounced sexual dimorphism was found. All the morphometric variables studied showed a high level of association (r). The adjustment of the regression models (r2) of the morphometric relationships was between 85% and 99%. The relationship between the standard length and the total weight was reflected in the rates of growth. The Relative Condition Factor (Kn) demonstrated the good state of health of this fish population, but also variations between the sexes were detected.

The results of a taphonomic analysis carried out on the vertebrate fossil deposit “Las Llanadas”, Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, are presented. The origin of the deposit is analyzed through features of the accumulated sediments, combined with the geological structure of the study area. The type of fossiliferous deposit represented was determined according to the categorizations proposed for Cuba by several authors. Differential preservation registered, between the recent material and the fossil and subfossil material, was analyzed by considering the mechanisms of taphonomic alteration identified as direct evidence of specific biostratinomic and fossildiagenetic processes to which the extracted remains were subjected. Anthropogenic and natural factors are discussed as responsible for the current accumulation features of the deposit. The historical reconstruction of the paleontological interventions on the site, during the last century, had been an important element to understand the features of the current fossil assemblage.
