This article proposes the application of a didactic sequence whose objective is the development of the sociolinguistic and intercultural competencies in learning Spanish as a foreign language. The proposal was applied to two groups that participated in the Spanish courses of the “Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros” from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The sequence was designed in the blended learning mode in order to combine class activities with other activities that the student can perform independently outside the classroom. The didactic sequence is made up of thematic units to work on cultural and grammatical aspects, and are selected according to the education center’s intermediate level course program. The results show the advantages of this proposal in three ways: the first was to confirm the interest and motivation of the students in deepening the social and cultural aspects of the target language. The second benefit is the importance of the short films as didactic material, as they allow the student to approach realities of interaction and communicative contexts the student may face during their stay in a Spanish-speaking country. Finally, it also revealed the benefits of combining face-to-face classes with the students’ autonomous work, which takes place on the platform and uses learning materials and activities designed for this purpose.

This research shows the results of the multimodal analysis of 68 advertisements on disability published from 2014 to 2016 in the three newspapers of largest circulation in Costa Rica (La Nación, Diario Extra and La Teja). The advertisements were collected, catalogued and analyzed using the theory of multimodality by Kress and Van Leuwen (2001, 2002, 2006) to determine how semiotic modes question the construction of discourses on disability. The semiotic resources used in the ads are established to determine the characterization of people with disabilities. The study concludes that the advertisements create meaning through semiotic interrelation, that is, through multimodality, and the linguistic and paralinguistic resources that compose the advertisements must be valued for them to be fully understood. Furthermore, after the analysis, the study determines that the advertisements continue to promote a discriminatory discourse evidenced by the discrepancy between the iconic component of the advertisement and the linguistic one, since the former gives prominence to the PwD, but thelinguistic component shows that advertisers play a predominant role and PwD are relegated to secondary roles.

When talking about historiographic renewal of the mid-70s, one would be remiss not to highlight British researcher Carolyn Hall’s work in the field of Costa Rican historical geography. This study surveys Carolyn Hall’s academic life and her contributions to methodology in the field of Costa Rican historiography history, paying special attention to her masterwork, El café y el desarrollo Histórico-Geográfico de Costa Rica. This research delves into an analysis of her theoretical influence to account for the economic aspect of her work.

This research presents the results of a study in mathematics education on affective domain analyzing the relationship between three variables: “attitude towards mathematics,” “perception of the attitude toward mathematics,” and “the student’s mother’s perceptions of the attitude toward mathematics” among Costa Rican secondary students in 2017. The study concludes that there are no differences on the first variables according to gender, yet the other two show higher levels formales and small effect size. Furthermore, significant relationships, both positive and moderate, are found among all three variables.

This paper presents a study that aimed to propose a minimal definition of the verb “pasear” as a verb of movement through the combinatorial analysis with nouns of complex delimitation, namely as montaña-monte and mar-océano. For this, we propose, first of all, a theoretical framework that considers the main ideas of the Generative Lexicon Theory (GLT) and a review of the most relevant studies regarding the verb “pasear” as a movement verb, to make way for an analysis combinatorial made from the appearances in the CORPES XXI. Later, these results are related, of lexicological nature, with possible lexicographical applications in some cases of difficult delimitation. Within the main results, this work proposes a definition of the verb “pasear” that considers the inclusion of the [± recreational] feature as part of the qualia structure, which could contribute not only with the establishment of limits in entries that have diffuse border lines, but also inthe studies of lexical and compositional semantics.

This article analyzes the notion of literary communication considering old but still valid questions in light of new critical contributions. What problems does the specificity of literary communication pose? Is misunderstanding an inevitable condition of literary communication? How does a written text communicate with the reader? How is the reader able to communicate his reading? What are the consequences regarding literary criticism? To work on this problem, we will follow a path that will halt at the following stops: the dream of communication (Richards), the uninterrupted dialogue (Gadamer and Derrida), and the dialogue of the deaf (Bayard). We will focus especially on the contemporary critic P. Bayard to think of misunderstandingas the basis of communication.
