This article describes desertion and failure in the first course of Mathematics at the National University of Costa Rica from the students’ point of view and draws general lines regarding possible causes.
This course has high desertion and failure rates that affect academic progress, as it has both, personal and social implications in terms of student and family expectations: emotional effects due to the discrepancy between the students’ aspirations and their achievements; and economic consequences for the university system.
This research surveyed the whole population of students enrolled in the first and second school year of 2017. Students filled out a questionnaire via email addressing general aspects and possible causes of desertion and failure.
The analysis showed a high desertion rate regardless of the school period; the highest percentage of approval was in the second cycle, especially in women, possibly associated with a learning process or adaptation to university life. Students that constitute the lower percentage of approval and higher percentage of failure come from public schools, which happens to make up the majority of the university population. Students point to low academic performance, previous knowledge, and study habits as the causes of desertion.
It is necessary to generate institutional policies that reduce the desertion and disapproval, specifically in courses of first entrance to the university, and therefore shorten graduation times and optimize institutional resources.

Resumen
The scientific discourse of Education is disseminated primarily through written genres and the research article is a fundamental one. This study is based on the theory of the superstructural sections of these discourse genres. Its purpose has been to contribute to a characterization of aspects of academic writing and publication in a very relevant area of knowledge, Education, in two Latin American countries. The objective of the examine, descriptive, exploratory and non-experimental was to analyze structurally and rhetorically a set of 52 research articles of this discipline in refereed journals from Colombiaand Venezuela.
The superstructural sections of the articles were analyzed in order to find out how these texts conform to an official or institutional rhetoric of science. Results show that the research articles analyzed tend to adapt to the official rhetoric, albeit only partially. However, texts dealing with historical topics almost always move away from the canonical schematization of such rhetoric.
These results could be due to characteristics of the discipline of education, humanistic and interdisciplinary in nature, to historical and philosophical traditions, as well as to the context of the production of texts, that is, the Latin American critical university, with its particular problems.

Resumen
The aim of the study was to analyze the psychological meanings of current teachers participating in a process of continuous training. The intentional, non-probabilistic sample was composed of graduate students of the Natural Sciences program (Valdez, 2005), 46 teachers—23 of them elementary education teachers and 23 secondary teachers specializing in Physics, Chemistry and Biology—, currently being trained in scholastic scientific research.
The methodology used in this research was the technique of Natural Semantic Networks (Valdez, 1998), a tool that seeks to identify the influence of culture in the psychological construction of identities. The study concludes that the teachers in the study displayed traditional, positivist beliefs on science. They conceive a science of algorithmic and formal teaching, based on the transmission of concepts and the construction of definitive, static, true, and absolutescientific thinking

Resumen
This research analyzes the power applies when determining the attitudes of a society before sociocultural events. A connection between linguistic and communication theories, applying the Grice´s Conversational Maxims (1975) and the theory of agenda setting (McCombs 1992, 1994, 1996, 2006), has been used. In this study, all news published about Spain in The Guardian digital edition (2013-2014) was selected to check if there is any misappropriation or misuse of them or if a proper, effective, and truthful communication. To check the use of information from The Guardian a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the content of this news has been made. The results reveal that the image offered by this digital media during this specific period of economic crisis is not always impartial. This paper helps to divulge the implications of discourse and the possible cognitive effect of the thematic coverage of these types of news.

Resumen
This work provides an overview of the controversy of science fiction literature in Costa Rica, which, to date, has not been studied by critics. It starts from the concepts of literary field and canon, then offers a synthesis of the main arguments and actors involved in this literary polemic. Finally, it reflects on its participation in the struggle for the establishment of a specific creative proposal in the attempt to set a literary canon for science fiction in Costa Rica

Resumen
This article studies La imagen de la luna en el espejo, a lesser-known play by autor Carlos Salazar Herrera. The narrative focus of this play is the image of the changeable wife and the indifferent husband, brought about by resorting to parody and satire. These dramatic technique, allow the author a masterful opportunity to ironize the roles perpetuated by patriarchy, daily cohabitation, and marital happiness.

Resumen
Introduction: The larynx microsurgery involves the dilemma of a surgical field that coincides spatially with that of access to the patient's airway. Myxomas, especially numerous and supra/subglottic, represent a therapeutic challenge. If together with this fact, the patient presents an anatomically difficult airway, the formula for the catastrophe just needs to mix both with a conventional ventilation plan. In this case, jet ventilation can be the choice to avoid a disaster situation. Objective: To describe the sequence of events and the outcomes when transcricotyroid jet ventilation was applied for the first time in the country. Clinical case: In the face of previous failure of an intervention using a traditional method of ventilation, in a second intention for exeresis of multiple laryngeal myxomas in a patient with anatomically difficult airway, after obtaining her informed consent, we proceeded to anesthetize to obtain a transcricothyroid access to the respiratory tract, to ventilate with jet flows through a 16G trocar. The intervention, planned for 15 min, was extended for 90 minutes without ventilatory or oxygenation complications. The patient was discharged without sequelae. Conclusions: Transcricotyroid jet ventilation was timely, safe and effective. Minor cardiovascular complications were easily controllable. Transcricotyroid jet ventilation was used for the first time in the country. This outcome stimulates the assimilation of jet ventilation technologies in elective or emerging contexts, such as the challenge of an anatomically difficult airway.
