The article presents a brief description of some key concepts that set trends in environmental care, such as strict preservationism, traditional conservationism and a new paradigm of conservation and sustainable management of the territory. These changes respond not only to theoretical demands, but also to the need to address today’s world socio-economic problems and its negative impact on the environment, so that the man-environment relationship must become more integrated, combining conservation and human development. As an example and from an ecophilosophical perspective, it is illustrated with the operation of a Biosphere Reserve.

The article analyzes the current global economic development since the crisis of the mortgages of 2008, which outlines the end of the neoliberal paradigm. Facing weak republican democracies, the strong States of the emerging countries and BRIC have become the global economic driving force. The author examines the precise case of China and Russia, central models of the strong States, and then studies the developmental strategies of Brazil and Argentina. These cases illustrate that in the new forms of economic organization, strong States are the main core. Observing this fact in the light of the Social Doctrine of the Church, the author indicates the risk that this implies to the detriment of the democratic system, where the center of the economy is the human being.

In the last two decades, the establishment of an adequate legal framework for the solidarity economy has been one of the central points on its agenda in Brazil. Some progress was made, but obstacles and uncertainties persist to this day, despite the political activism of the social actors involved. In addition to the fact that the solidarity economy faces great opposition from traditional sectors, some crucial barriers - such as the democratic weakness of the country - demand a continuous effort of "institutional work" to change the current framework, in favour of non-capitalist forms of economy. To address these issues, after exposing the process of emergence of the solidarity economy in Brazil, and the political convergences among its actors in legal matters, the article examines the innovations of the current proposals of a national law, highlighting the main obstacles to its approval and establishment. As an example of these difficulties, the article analyses the new law on worker cooperatives, a crucial element for both the solidarity economy and the cooperative sector in Brazil.

This article presents relevant background concerning the origins, historical inspirations, content and contemporary challenges of economic practices conceptualized as constituents of a Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE). We will consider, in this regard, what it means to introduce the social in the economic. We will propose that an SSE can be understood as a way of understanding, and building on, the overlap between the social and the economic from an emancipatory perspective. A central focus will be on the kinds of social relationships that SSE generates in its characteristic production practices.   Further, these same considerations lead to highlighting the potential of an SSE to enhance the prospects for economic democracy, due to the expansion of the scope of common property that it entails.  Consequently, by the same token, it strengthens political democracy and enhances the prospects for extending the scope of political democracy.
