Edo, María
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
In the present study, the author claims that the conceptual, methodological and practical choices involved in any poverty measurement exercise have consequences on the estimated magnitude, depth and structure of poverty. Nevertheless, these options are not always explicit. The 2010 Iraqi Poverty Report, published by the World Bank, represents an exception in this sense. The author uses this case to explore in detail the underlying options in the welfare indicator, the poverty line and the poverty measures, showing the importance of making these choices explicit.

Naudet, Jean-Yves
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
The author emphasizes in his analysis of this papal document those aspects which, from his point of view, suggest lines of inquiry for economists. After giving the context of the Pope’s reflection, the article covers the proposals to be found in this Encyclical regarding the market, profit, business and corporate social responsibility. According to this thinker, from the thought of Benedict XVI emerges the road towards a true ethical economy.

de Pablo, Juan Carlos
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
The economist Juan Carlos de Pablo suggests in this article the updating of the long-running debate concerning the agricultural and industrial sectors in Argentina. From the now famous discussion on the “agro-exporter” model and looking in the current context that requires especial attention to the central role of China in the international economy, de Pablo wonders about the commercial and productive structure suitable for the country. Finally, the author reminds us of the importance of the cultural, social and political dimensions of the design of a national economic structure and strategy.

Ojea Quintana, Julio M.
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
As its title indicates, the article by Professor Julio M. Ojea Quintana is an analysis of the political dimension of the encyclical Populorum Progressio. After some clarification regarding the historical context of the writing of the Papal document, the author examines the perspective from which the political issues included in the encyclical are considered.Among these, the article refers specifically to the common good, the role of politics and authority in relation to the principle of subsidiarity, and revolutionary violence.

Verhezen, Peter
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
This article is an attempt to reinterpret “The Ethics of the Management Paradox” as it is formulated by the Leuven philosopher-economist Luk Bouckaert (2006) who analyses how to make business ethics operational and how to make business genuinely ethical. The question becomes to what extent ethical behavior constituting a good reputation can be “used” by corporate managers to enhance corporate value. In line with Bouckaert’s paradox, Peter Verhezen argues that instrumentalizing reputation would possibly undermine its objectives to achieve useful benefits.

Zamagni, Stefano
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
The notion of ‘common good’ is currently going through a crisis in its conceptualization and implementation. Stefano Zamagni, professor at the University of Bologna, comes close in this article to the various practical applications of this category in modern societies. His article is geared around three concepts: person, democracy and fraternity. In the first place, he analyzes the possibility of a shared social ethos in a ‘post secularized’ world based on the value of the person. Secondly, he considers the need for a change from a representativedemocracy to a deliberative one in order to recreate the principle of the common good in the public sphere. Finally, Zamagni reflects about ways of civil fraternity in the economic world.

Millán Smitmans, Patricio
Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina
This article is a reflection based on the report “Employment and Social Development” produced by the researchers Jorge Colina, Osvaldo Giordano and Marcelo Marzocchini of the Department of Economics of the Catholic University of Argentina. Using the Gini index for the different regions of the country, the author shows the enormous differences in the income distribution between the Central, South and North regions of Argentina. Such differenceshave evident consequences that are not currently considered by the national government’s public policies in relation to provincial governments and impoverished regions. The article proposes decentralization as a means for the development of each region.
