Resumen
The theme of this paper is related to the access to and permanence of students from underrepresented groups in Brazilian Higher Education. Its objective is to provide a broad framework regarding the treatment of affirmative action policies in federal universities in the southeastern of Brazil. In this work, a broad and varied repertoire of official documents of all the nineteen federal universities of this Brazilian region was analyzed. After data analyses, three categories were constructed: admission, post-admission support, and pedagogical programs of retention. This study indicates that a broader understanding of affirmative action treatment can be an important point to achieve their goals, especially regarding the retention of the benefited students.

Resumen
Conducted in two lower secondary schools (for children aged approximately 11 to 14 years) in São Paulo and Salvador cities, this ethnographic study analyzes how adolescent girls negotiate gender identities in the relational frames of bullying. As a process of social control, bullying is based on difference games that lead to the learning of gender norms. Discussing bullying as gender violence shows how girls manipulate traditional female categorizations and attributes to promote social distinctions and power inequality between them. Power and status disputes not only contribute to the social ordering of the group by regulating sexuality and stereotyped behaviors of feminine delicacy and care, but also make it possible to claim egalitarian values and practices.

Resumen
This article presents reflections on gender equality in secondary education, particularly regarding the inclusion of female youths in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Our empirical source for these reflections was a review of studies indexed in the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) database. Using the concept of gender as part of the analysis of women’s access to these areas, 55 articles were selected and divided into four groups. Considering that, in recent years, Brazil has launched several initiatives to promote women’s access to exact science programs, learning about research in other countries may contribute to a critical reflection on how gender inequality may be addressed.

Resumen
The article aims to analyze the representations of teacher appreciation by senior Pedagogy students. In the first part, we reflect on teacher appreciation in educational policies, based on the description of the teaching profession in Brazil and its “instability”, taking the political ideology as a “social constant”. In the second part, we use the Theory of Social Representations and the understanding of educational policies, from the Core Nucleus Theory, in order to understand how the social representations of senior Pedagogy students on teacher appreciation are structured. Finally, we traced the research paths and, through prototypical analyzes, we studied the social representations of these students.

Resumen
The number of professionally-qualified graduates has increased considerably in recent years due to accelerated growth in higher education in Brazil. Aiming to understand the consequences of university expansion on law graduates, by means of 33 interviews with recent graduates and the analysis of secondary data, this article shows that the search for civil service examinations, the devaluation of the associate lawyer position in law firms, the occupation of new territories in the labor market, and working as a self-employed lawyer are common experiences. The increase in the number of accredited members interacts with the rules of a highly regulated field that increases professional competition, but also creates forms of professional admission considered unsatisfactory by the bachelors.

Resumen
This article aims to promote further reflection on the benefits derived from class-size reduction, seeking to demonstrate that the expenditures resulting from this are usually overestimated when they are determined on the basis of gross employee cost to the State, and not taking into account the corresponding net costs. This scholarly exercise takes into account the Portuguese case and the costs of a teacher in the public education system in Portugal. This work intends to contribute to a better understanding of this subject, raising awareness of different educational actors of the relationship between cost and direct and indirect benefits of a class-size reduction policy.

Resumen
This article discusses the distribution of teachers and students by color/race in stricto sensu graduate programs of the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), analyzing the extent of white hegemony and the degree to which the black population was able to enter into the graduate programs. In the three academic levels (doctoral, academic master’s and professional master’s), the black population is under-represented in the student and teaching bodies. In the teaching body, the space of academic power, the under-representation of blacks is higher and their presence is residual – or practically non-existent – in some programs. The data demonstrate the high racial inequality in stricto sensu graduate programs in the UFPR, which justifies the creation of affirmative action policies in its other academic levels besides the graduate programs.

Resumen
In this article we discuss the meanings of educational micro-intervention carried out in community-based projects. We aimed to study the implications of the new rationales of public management and the management of social and school inequalities, present in the Programa InovAção [Innovation Program] (PI). The analysis of the data suggests the ambivalence of meanings and results of community micro-intervention: we observed practices, supported by broad social commitments, of collective construction of individual empowerment (themanagement of the self, learning the task of the pupil, normalising academic biographies); these practices were inhabited by tensions coming from the connection to remedial educationalresponses and guidelines towards the individualization and localisation of interventions facing school problems, which have by object the subjects excluded.

Resumen
This study aims to highlight the need for developing institutional projects on University Pedagogy which contribute to the professional development of higher education teachers at work. We questioned them the possible contributions of training activities focused on teaching development and professional identity. This quantitative, qualitative research was conducted in a federal university located in the region of Triângulo Mineiro, in Brazil, from 2013 to 2016. We collected data by means of questionnaires and interviews with university professors. We concluded that fragmented, sporadic training processes contribute little to professional development. Thus, in view of the complex work in higher education, institutional efforts are needed to consolidate a University Pedagogy as a permanent field for teacher training and development.

Resumen
This study aims to provide input for the process of monitoring and evaluating the Lei de Cotas [Quota Law] (Law No. 12.711/2012) by investigating changes in the socioeconomic and racial profiles of the student body of federal higher education institutions (Ifes) from 2012 to 2016. To do so, we developed an exploratory analysis of the profile of incoming students, enrolled in undergraduate courses in Ifes, based on data from the Higher Education Census (2012-2016) and the Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio [National High School Exam] (2011-2015). Our results suggest that the Lei de Cotas has produced inclusive results on most of the Ifes in Brazil (with contradictory effects on some), especially among newcomers from the public network system and the self-declared black, pardo and indigenous peoples.
