This study on the origin of love jealousy in Imperial Greece has as its main objective to demonstrate that the term ζηλοτυπία denoted suspicion for the loss of affection and attention of the loved one, observable from written testimonies, from various sources, such as novels, moral philosophy, oneiromancy or magical papyri.

In recent decades, research on emotions has gained greater relevance within the field of classical studies. An outstanding and innovative point of this perspective –with regard specifically to the literary sphere– is that the notions of emotion and affect help to conceptualize the frame of reference that governs the reception of a given text. To a certain extent, this implies understanding the emotional dimension that arises and manifests itself in the instance of poetic or dramatic performance as a constitutive element of the literary genre –beyond formal and normative characterizations. This paper aims to examine in archaic Greek iambography (Archilochus of Paros and Hipponax of Ephesus) and in ancient comedy (Aristophanes) the forms of manipulation of emotions in the laughable ἐχθρός construction through ψόγος.

The Liber medicinalis Collegii Balliolensis contains an acephalous recipe, whose title, medical indications and some ingredients have disappeared. Its title also does not appear in the index of chapters that precedes the book. The identification of two parallel recipes in Vatican manuscripts allows us to know that it is an Electuarium dia prassiu maior that forms a pair with the following recipe, which has the same title. Two conclusions can be drawn from this: 1) that the two electuaries circulated together as part of the book from the beginning; 2) that the acephalous recipe does not appear in the index of chapters because this index was added later, when the recipe had already lost its initial half as a result of a transmission accident.

Louise Glück provides a compelling example of Classical Receptions in contemporary poetry. Hence, this paper aims at discussing Glück’s psychoanalytic interpretation of the so-called Homeric Hymn to Demeter and «Persephone the Wanderer», a poem pertaining to Glück’s Averno (2006), attempting to demonstrate the appropriation of the myth of Demeter and Persephone from a psychoanalytic approach. After an introduction to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (Foley, 1994), and Louise Glück and her poem «Persephone the Wanderer», I will compare the myth of Demeter and Persephone in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter with Glück’s «Persephone the Wanderer». From a psychoanalytic perspective, Demeter’s psychological state will be addressed while pointing out her motherhood and her grief, and then I will associate the concept of narcissism to both Demeter and Hades in Glück’s poem and its impact on Persephone.

This article aims to analyse the theatrical version that David Stuttard published regarding th efamous comedy by Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. Considering the definitions provided by Lorna Hardwick (2003), it will be proposed a reading of David Stuttard’s play as an adaptation rather than a new version. In addition, the article will focus on the female characters in Stuttard’s play, as well as on the means used by the author to achieve the humorous aspect that characterises the play. Finally, there will be focus on the contemporaneity of this play and provide some critical assessment of it.

This work examines the commentaries on Horace’s Odes 1, 4; 4, 7 and 4, 12 composed by Porphyrio, Pseudo-Acro,Cristoforo Landino and Antonio Mancinelli (Horatius cum quatuor commentariis, Venetiis 1492). After a brief overview of the Horatian exegetical tradition, we analyze the similarities and differences in terms of content and form between ancient scholia and Renaissance commentaries. Thus, we aim to highlight the interpretations on these poems by the different exegetes and its role in a scholastic context.

The article draws upon Minoan 'foundation deposits', focusing on issues such as typology, content, context and interpretation. As Hunt (2006: 128) points out... «foundation rituals were not isolated cult practices but belonged to a cultic koine that existed throughout the ancient Mediterranean». It seems that ‘foundation’ ceremonies are connected with the “initiation” and “consecration” of a building’s life, usually through “religious” as well as “magical” practices including the ritual burial and integration of sacrificial offerings into the “corps” of the building for its everlasting protection and prosperity.
