Review about Javier Ayala Calderón, Fantasmas de la Nueva España. Discursos y representaciones políticas y sociales de las apariciones de ultratumba en documentos novohispanos de los siglos XVI y XVII (Guanajuato: Universidad de Guanajuato, 2019).

This article analyses the sources and intertexts of the definition of eclecticism that Fray Juan Benito Díaz de Gamarra presents in his book Elementa recentioris philosophiae (San Miguel el Grande, 1774). He resorts mainly to the passage “teach justice alongside pious knowledge” (docent justitiam cum pia scientia) from the Stromata of Clement of Alexandria to defend the utility of eclectic philosophy, because it values ancient and modern authors for their moral and philosophical usefulness. This definition is set in the context of the transition from scholastic thought to modern philosophy (recentior philosophia), and alludes to an interdiscursive framework (with modern treatise writers such as Giuseppe Antonio Ferrari and Andrés Piquer) in which Díaz de Gamarra advocates modern eclectic philosophy for the teaching of youth in America, while questioning education fundamentally based on Aristotle, such as the scholastic method.

Between 1635 and 1641, the governor of the Philippines, don Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, and the archbishop of Manila, fray Hernando Guerrero, had a sustained bitter confrontation, the ramifications of which reached within the Real Audiencia, the ecclesiastical council, and the religious orders, and would eventually have dramatic consequences for both. This paper analyses political and ecclesiastical contentiousness based on the contemporary and historiographical sources that narrate these events. The results display the complex nature of the relationships between the secular and ecclesiastical powers in mid-seventeenth-century Philippines, as well as the jurisdictional conflicts that existed between the colonial institutions of that period.

Growing complexities in the indigence and global business environment, the demand for Corporate Risk Management (CRM) has fostered greatly. Equally, Financial Performance (FP) and Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) are believed to be vital parameters for assessing any organisation's success. Both FP and SGR are get affected by different risks. Therefore, to the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first endeavour meant to empirically shed light on the Impact of CRM on a firm’s FP and SGR. By taking a sample of 160 listed Non-Financial firms from emerging and developed Countries stocks markets, on the bases of market capitalization, covering a period of 12 years (2007-2018). The CRM index has been constructed by using the Principal Component Analysis technique. Panel data fixed-effect Model applied on the bases of Hausman test. The results articulated that CRM has a significant and positive impact on ROE and SGR in the context of both cases. In contrast, inflation negatively relates to both scenarios, but the size and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) have a positive and significant relationship with ROE and SGR. However, in Pakistan's case, Size and GDP have articulated adverse effect on ROE and SGR.
