Abstract This article analyzes the post-1945 attempt of the Portuguese New State and Francoism to define themselves as «organic democracies» and places it within the framework of the struggle to conceptualize democracy that took place in postwar Europe. By combining political and comparative history and resorting to discourses delivered by the main political authorities of both dictatorships between 1945 and 1957, the article provides the first account of the major characteristics of such a discourse and its connections with the discourses on democracy that the main European political actors developed during the postwar. In doing so, it provides a new perspective to assess both dictatorships integration process into the post-1945 International Community. Moreover, it nuances the account of the process of conceptualization of democracy in postwar Europe. Finally, it challenges the interpretative framework according to which both regimes became isolated and completely disconnected from European history after the Axis defeat.

Abstract  Between may the 23rd and the 26th, the 2019 European Elections were held in the EU. After a tumultuous five-year period, due to several rupture attempts such as Grexit or Brexit, and the rise of numerous Europhobic or Eurosceptic parties, these movements have failed to break the barrier 33% of seats in the European Parliament, which would have enabled them to trigger numerous structural changes in the EU. At the same time, pan-European political movements like Volt Europe or Diem25, even modestly, entered at the Europarliament, which seek, together with the classical parties, to counteract the threat of a breakdown of the European Union. What influence do social networks have on the coordination and dissemination of their political messages?  Taking those examples, we will compare the online effect of new political parties, analyzing a series of data obtained from the social network Twitter, to weigh its relevance and political influence. Could it be that European Union is in better shape that we thought and that voters are more moderate of what mass media and politics say?

Abstract The article analyses the role of the construction of memories and testimony in the memorialization process of the former Terranova barracks, in what is now the Villa Grimaldi Park for Peace. The purpose of this review is to shed light on different social processes which shaped the material and symbolic conditions affecting the construction of a memory site. The analysis highlights the public dimension and uses of the testimonies of survivors, and how they become social voices and agents engaged in the struggle over memory and history. The paper addresses the strategic use of testimonies by social agents entangled in a context they affect and by which they are affected.
