This article discusses migratory movement control policies and the production of migrant populations destined to “supply” precarious labor markets. We use as an analytical example the case of Chile and the measures implemented in 2018 by the national government towards Venezuelan and Haitian migration. We analyze how the process of borderization allows us to understand the exercises of cultural and identity delimitation of the nation, and the construction of subjects whose economic and social insertion is conditioned to spaces of vulnerability. To do so, we will present a state of the art regarding the concept of border and characterize the main policies and measures adopted by the Chilean government towards migratory flows from Venezuela and Haiti. Finally, we deliver the main conclusions arising from these cases, in particular the effects of migration control and management measures on the differentiated and selective construction of these movements.

This paper analyzes the role of the Lafkenche Territorial Identity (ITL) in the configuration of an ethnopolitical conflict over access to maritime territory for native peoples in Chile. By describing and analyzing the emergence and development of this ethnopolitical organization, it shows an effective way in which a part of the Mapuche people uses the spaces of ethnogovernment in their favor and becomes an important actor against the State. In fact, our study of the intervention of the ITL in the commune of Hualaihué, shows successful forms of ethnopolitization of williches indigenous communities that are organized for exclusive access as indigenous to the maritime territory, pointing out new routes for the development of the demands of indigenous peoples against the State of Chile.

At least in the last 16 years the idea has spread that in Argentina politicization, social and political participation has grown, the repressive apparatus has been democratized and there has been an expansion of rights. The other side of this “representation” is, precisely, the negation of those attributes, demanding attention on the processes of repression, silencing and violation of rights. Based on the analysis of primary and secondary, quantitative and qualitative data, this work seeks to verify non-participation and non-politicization as extended social practices, to synthesize the massiveness of social policies as a way to construct sociabilities and to discuss, from the perspective of the subjects, the emotions that constitute the policies of the sensitivities associated with these two processes. We conclude that the “unnoticed repression” implied by dependence, individualism and self-centered consumption make physical repression a mechanism reserved for very specific moments and actors, regardless of whether or not it is important in its number.

The dynamics of global lithium exchange, the control over its value chain and the market for lithium-ion batteries are a prime indicator of the north-south relations and contemporary development strategies applied by countries, since lithium is at the heart of a new energy paradigm. Based on statistical data, our objective is to analyze the commercial dynamics of lithium raw material, of batteries and accumulators, as well as to account for global innovation patterns and consumer markets of final products such as automobiles. As a result, we describe a pronounced shift in the dominant axis of lithium technology control toward Southeast Asia, which leaves the Atlantic economies behind while reissuing a dependent pattern in north-south relations.

The representations of Charles V (1500-1558) made during his lifetime have been more thoroughly studied than those made after his death, perhaps because the imperial character of posthumous representations is less evident. Nonetheless, some of these representations could still convey such a character to respond to a political necessity. At the time of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), this was the case of Antoon Van Dyck’s Charles V on Horseback. This article sheds new light on the origins, the commissioning and the date of execution of this painting by deciphering the imperial ambition which is inscribed in the painting.

The Heraklitos mosaic, which dates to the second century AD and is displayed today at the Vatican Museums, depicts the theme of the asàrotos òikos (unswept floor) alongside allusions to Dionysian and Isiac mystery cults. The mosaic is well known due to its highly illusionistic depiction of scraps of food, which are scattered evenly across the room’s floor, as if left behind – a theme which according to Pliny was first created by the mosaicist Sosus in Hellenistic Pergamon. The mosaic Pliny is referring to was never discovered, and the theme is known today only through five surviving Roman variations, the Heraklitos mosaic being the largest and most elaborate one. This article examines the ways in which the Heraklitos mosaic expresses the connection between power, social statues and initiation into mystery cults in Imperial Rome, and explores the connection between traditional Roman beliefs, foreign cult practices and elitist artistic representation.
