The purpose of this article is to highlight, grosso modo, the background, context, advances and challenges of political science in Honduras. A priori, one has to acknowledge the meaningful setback of this discipline within the field of social sciences. Such an assertion causes great concern if it is considered that thejuridical, sociological, historical and psychological sciences, – that appear as sciences with a relative high development in Honduras due to a strong academic institutionalization–, have not reached the right levels of consolidation due to the scarce accumulation, production and update of the scientific knowledge.Nonetheless, during the last five years some initiatives have emerged in the country to propitiate a higher development in political science, which in spite of a certain dispersion of efforts, has generated a renewed interest for this field of the knowledge.

The study of political science began in Guatemala in the late 1960s and for over a decade it had to develop with limitations imposed by the authoritarian regimes that governed the country. However, from the beginning the political science schools actively promoted democratization. When the democratizationprocess began in the mid 1980s, the possibilities for research of different issues expanded. Something similar occurred with the peace process in the 1990s. Throughout three decades of existence, political science has significantly contributed to democracy–building and peace–building in Guatemala. However,as an academic discipline, it has been limited by the strong links that it has maintained with other social sciences and law. During 35 years the academic centers that teach political science have faced a series of dilemmas regarding the type of programs they offer to students (technical degree, bachelor degree or master degree), the profile of those who graduate vis–à–vis the job market and the emphasis in the study of the problems of Guatemala vis–à–vis a more global perspective.

This essay presents a critical review of political science in Peru research over the last decades, and sustains that consequence of an excessive politization within different leftist currents, the landscape is marked by the absence of serious research on fundamental issues, and approaches based on inappropriateconceptual and theoretical frameworks. This is striking, because if peruvian political reality can be characterized by something, this would be its unpredictability, telling of the autonomy of politics. Currently, the discipline is in better conditions to analyze politics, a necessary development given that almost everythingis still to be done on fundamental political issues.

Since its democratic transition, Ecuador has experienced three presidential breakdowns, several institutional reforms including a National Assembly, and the surge of an indigenous political movement. Given the unparalleled sequence of political events in this country, it is fair to say that most of the political analysishas taken place on the streets, popular assemblies, or newspaper articles. Lacking a common methodology, rigorous empirical research, and a comparative perspective, political science in Ecuador –with notable exceptions– has been limited to providing post mortem explanations of major political events. This paperreviews the evolution of the themes, analyzes the institutional factors that hindered the teaching and research, and outlines the main factors to promote the development of political science in Ecuador.

It has been said that there is no political science in Panama. However, in this article a more complex and rich landscape is registered: It shows how the Law “and political sciences” schools were established, and how the precarious teaching of political science became trapped between jurists. This implies an excessive preoccupation for the constitutional organization of the State. It is also exposed on this article, how a parallel way was develop, with the ascent of sociology and other social sciences, that examine the entire society, and from angles predominantly historic and economic. The researches on both basins are numerous and examine a great amount of topics during the last 25 years. However, the simultaneous end of the military rule and the cold war, brings additional opportunities for academic work. For Panamanian political science, it may be a new, and more solid, starting point.

In this paper, a description of the most recent development of political science in El Salvador is drawn. Its origins, evolution, academic influences, challenges, strengths, social appraisal, impacts and the job opportunities for the new professionals graduated from this discipline are briefly described. The paperemphasizes three points: First, the fact that only one Political Science Academic Program exists in El Salvador, a Master’s Degree Program. This article mostly refers to this Program and, therefore, has a specific focus rather than a general one. Second, political science research is also still at its beginningstages. Finally, the Community of Salvadoran scholars in political science is small. In fact, it only has a few members, less than ten. They all graduated from foreign universities, and represent in someway a generational chance for the social sciences in El Salvador.

From the 1970’s, the formal study of political science in Mexico has experienced an unprecedented growth. This essay focuses on the last three decades of evolution of political science in Mexico from two perspectives, the institutional, distinguished by the progressive autonomy research departments devotedto political studies have achieved in regard of other areas, such as sociology, and from the epistemological perspective, characterized by the end of the Marxist paradigm as a sufficient reserve of analytic accounts regarding political events occurring in Mexican public life after 1982. Even though liberal political sciencehad been introduced in Mexico prior to this date, it was not until then that it acquired a comprehensive influence. Simultaneously, public awareness of political affairs grew along with the strengthening of a scientific community which profits from journals, academic departments and research institutes whichfulfill their inquests nurturing from a plurality of scholar traditions.

Since the late 1980s (and early 1990s) political science in Cuba is embedded in a renovation process that entails a series of important challenges. This renovation is closely related to the impact that the fall of the socialism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe had in the social sciences of the country. Such eventforced Cubans to rethink the basics on economics, sociology, and political science. Since then, Cuban political scientists returned to the rescue of traditional political science in Cuba and those critical perspectives, which Roberto González, called once “marxology”.
