This article approaches the last journal directed by Jaime Eyzaguirre, Estudios de Historia de las Instituciones Políticas y Sociales (1966-1967) edited by Facultad de Ciencias Jurídicas y Sociales de la Universidad de Chile. It holds that the review's main issues, the 1891 Civil War, were indirectly aimed to questioning historian Hernán Ramírez Necochea's thesis. This marked a turning point in Eyzaguirre's concerns, since he previously had encouraged his disciples to investigate the Kingdom of Chile's history. This historiographical dispute, which was part of a struggle for social imaginaries, sought to neutralize the progressive image of President José Manuel Balmaceda that left-wing historiography had created.

This article analyzes the educational reforms that fostered chemistry teaching in both secondary and professional levels in Mexico City in Independent Mexico. It encompass the period from 1796 —when the subject matter was institutionalized in Colegio de Minería— to 1900, when it was established in the following schools: Medicine, Military College, Agriculture, Arts and Crafts, Commerce and Management, Teachers' Training Schools, Elementary Schools, National Preparatory School, and Practical Mining Schools outside the capital. It is concluded that the most influential teachers (engineers and doctors) were involved in this development by acting as members of public educational commissions and as teachers as well, in accordance with the ideals of progress and modernization of the nation.

Mariano Riva Palacio was an important patron of the arts during the second half of the 19th Century in Mexico. When in power he patronized public monuments to the heroes of Mexico's Independence, emblazoned with rhetorical mottos that exalted a nationalist sentiment, in accordance with the need to legitimize and consolidate the Restored Republic governments. In this article, I will only refer to some of the most important works, without going into the iconographic or processual analysis. By researching documents, mainly from Riva Palacio's personal archive, I only intend to show the personage’s political intentions and the origins of the public visual images of the heroes of the then new Mexico's civic pantheon.

This article analyzes how rumbera movies contributed to the emergence of narratives of fear around black Latin American religiosity. From its beginnings in the 1930 decade, the aesthetics and stories of this film genre cast diverse formal and festive religious manifestations as a part of black people's primitive and immoral condition. This joined with fears around big cities, violence and the colonial legacy of Latin American countries, so creating cultural products in which a latent fear can be perceived. This article makes a brief analysis of these processes, mainly in some films performed by Ninón Sevilla in the 1950 decade.

Priest Agustín Rivera's efforts to live by his pen from 1869 onwards allow us to delve deeper into the workings of the Porfiriato's cultural field. Priest Rivera made his books known through the press, sending them dedicated to the editors of both liberal and protestant newspapers. The clearest sign of this collaboration were the advertisements of his books and the publication of excerpts and even full texts, always selectively, according to the interests of the journalists. In this way, they contributed to the sale of Priest Rivera's books and to reinforcing his prestige as a liberal.

The present text aims to analyze the actions of Zitácuaro, Michoacan's liberal and Presbyterian women in the context of the San Luis Potosí's Liberal Congress. Women's participation in female clubs, newspapers and civic tribunes was a major achievement in a society where males traditionally played these roles. Women's aim was to counteract the clergy's influence on women by means of a liberal school project that would train modern women able to participate in civic, political and democratic spaces on equal terms with males.

The modernizing project of the questioned-elect president Carlos Salinas de Gortari involved strengthening ties with the United States in all the areas of the bilateral relationship. The reactivation of the legitimization mechanisms and cultural diplomacy were central strategies of his government. The moment created in New York by the exhibition Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries (1990) and more than two hundred parallel events were very important in this regard. They were integrated into the program Mexico: A Work of Art, operated by the Salinas cultural bureaucracy. Through interviews and Mexican and American documents, the present work allows us to identify continuities and ruptures of the political practices of this bureaucracy, as well as throwing light on the 1990's New York events. By playing a coordinator-mediator role, these cultural operators were able to reactivate a type of state centralization, circumvent the demands of liberalization and turned culture back into a profitable diplomatic and legitimizing mechanism.

The present text analyzes some travelers' memoirs that contain notes about Jalisco's customs, landscapes and culture. It is often the case that rural societies can only be understood through these sources. This includes aspects that we use to discern through the lens of cultural history, like the relation between Jalisco's rural society with its environment and animals, particularly pigs. In the middle of 19th century, Jalisco's rural population used these animals not only as a protein source, but also as a useful resource for livelihood and daily life. This relationship attracted the attention of the reviewed travelers, since they abhorred pigs.
