This article approaches two problems that intersect several times in different ways. On the one side, the French Intervention and the Second Mexican Empire as characteristic periods of the socalled official history; and on the other, the relations between memory, forgetfulness and pardon as conditions of possibility for historiography. These problems (occurred during the decisive last third of the nineteenth century) are explored according to Paul Ricoeur hermeneutics. To contribute to understand and enlarge the study of our historical conscience, a reflection is proposed.

The present article analyzes the uses and discourses of holidays, mainly national ones, during the huertismo (1913-1914). The civic calendar and the general usefulness of public and private holidays of that time are examined. It is postulated that holidays functioned as spokesmen for the government’s militarism, served to link it with social causes, and they were occasions to bring back the Porfiriato regime to mind. These are little-known aspects by the historiography of the period. The research is based on the press of that time in Mexico City.

This article explores the conditions of the reception and circulation of Herbert Marcuse's ideas among Mexican university students. We propose that the reception of this German thinker's work took place in an atmosphere of left-wing thought renewal and it was a reference for a young generation who devoted themselves to criticize the post-revolutionary Mexican regime, transform the traditional militancy model of the old communist parties and exalt the strength of “radical imagination”. The article also shows that this philosopher’s contributions influenced the Mexican psychoanalytic field in a climate of political and cultural effervescence.

The history of nursing in Mexico is a recent study field. The earliest research on the area dates around twenty years ago, but no literature analysis has been done. This article is a historiographic review. On the one hand, it examines and criticizes the traditional paradigm of the history of nursing, which is deeply rooted in the positivist philosophy, and calls to rethink such an approach. On the other hand, it sets forth possible approaches to the discipline from diverse historiographic angles; it suggests related themes and identifies some sources as starting points for new studies.

This work analyzes a photo-album made in homage to Concepción Acevedo de la Llata, better known as madre Conchita, who was charged of being the intellectual author of Álvaro Obregón assassination. The album itself is evidence of the use of photography to present personages as model lives. Like hagiographies, the album exalts Acevedo’s religious life in order to depict her as a martyr of the Cristero War. Photos portray madre Conchita images from the last decade of the 19th century to her death, so showing the devotional value that Cristeros attributed to photography, opening the possibility of considering the images as relics.

The objective of this article is to identify the stages of Indian incursions—a long-lasting phenomenon— into the north of Tamaulipas during the first half of the nineteenth century. It posits the continuity and adaptation of several factors, which converged in the Colonial era and influenced both the course of the raids and the treatment of the nomads by the colonizing forces. This kind of study allows for a more complete and in-depth view of the phenomenon, and of its influence in the formation of Mexico's northern border. One of the main conclusions reached is that both Mexican and American authorities proved unable to devise mechanisms able to incorporate the natives into the territory of this new border and the societies which sprung up in it. For the natives, casting away their traditional way of life and adapting to the conditions brought about by the reshaping of the northern border proved to be arduous. The raids from the Natives stand as a clear example of this rough process.

This paper studies the public discussions that took place in the Mexican press following the reform of the Civil Code in 1884 and focuses in the controversy on testamentary freedom. These discussions reveal the reformers’ interest in broadening the limits of freedom, while paradoxically exerting a moralizing influence over the behavior of young men of well-to-do families. They also show deep contradictions within the liberal visions regarding property and labor. The paper presents a methodological proposal for the historical research on masculinity using resources of the history of political ideas.
